    Knight Armor Review

Post by ARSP on Fri Aug 24, 2012 12:01 pm

    Introduction

Well today I guys I decided to try something new instead of talking about a weapon this time I am going to talk about armor just to mix it up a little. Hope you like it. Next Segment is going live on Wednesday. Enjoy

    Introduction to Knight Armor

Knight Armor or should I say Plate Armour was designed to protect the knights from common medieval weapons like swords, spears, arrows, crossbow bolts, maces, axes etc. plate armor is immensely heavy. Just wearing the mail alone it weighed about 25 pounds adding the plates made it fifty so it was heavy enough to protect the knight and yet allow to fight with some efficiency. Plate armor was extremely expensive to make the better quality the armor the more wealthy it's wearer was. Unlike Mail or even Leather armor Knight had to be custom fitted to the knight so two different people could not wear the same armor. So essentially as plate armour got better the men inside it became medieval Tanks. Like tanks in real life Knight armor for the time was Pretty Complex

The Parts of a Knight's Armor and How it was Made

Knight Armor consisted of about 14 Parts.

    • The Sabatons- Iron plated Boots
    • Greaves- Plates that protect you calves and shins
    • Poleyns- Plate that protects the knee caps
    • Cuisses- protects your thighs
    • Spurs- straps used spur horses
    • Besagues- Small shield shaped plates that protects the shoulder and armpits
    • Rerebrace- Protects upper arm
    • Vambrace- which protects lower arm.
    • Guantlets- Gloves covered in metal rings
    • Breast Plate- What it sounds like
    • Back Plate- Again what it sounds like
    • Faulds- rings of armor that protect your hips, abdomen and lower back
    • Helmet- Metal 'hat' the protects head
    • Aventail- piece of mail that protects Neck

Chain Mail was by doing these steps

    1. Cutting the iron into thin strips
    2. Heating the Iron over a very Hot Fire
    3. While the strips are still hot pull them through a tubular mold.
    4. Use tongs and hammers to shape the iron into rings or squares
    5. Wrap the rings around a mold
    6. After they cool wrap link the rings around each other

PS- It took hundred of thousands of ring to produce 1 piece of chain mail.

Plate Armor which was essentially placed on top of Chain mail was by

    1. Cutting Iron into useable sizes
    2. heating and hammering the Iron into the correct shape for the wearer (chest, Helmet, Arms etc.)
    3. Fit and reheat the Armor as necessary.

Now onto the In Game Review!

    The Review

The Armor I am reviewing is the Knight Armor Standard to the starting class Knight. The Knight is classified as a medium armor in total it's equip burden is 25.0 and it has altogther about 46 poise which is actually pretty good for starting armor. In total at +10 it has 217.7 physical defense which is very high but not the highest. The Main problem with this Armor Set is that you are going to be fat rolling..... a lot. For low level characters this armor set is painful to use if speed is your thing but it's high protection is great for noobs and it make most boss fights in the early stages of the game a lot easier. It has good defense all round but the fat rolling thing is a turn off. This can be mitigated with Havel's ring or the ring of FaP. This is a decent set but is out classed by most sets in it's category. The Elite Knight Set which is the knight set's closest cousin is much better. Considering everything I would give this set a 7.25/10 it is better than the average armor and it has a good amount of poise and protection but man is it slow and impractical for higher level usage.

Now here is an entertaining video

damn, I've always wanted to make a piece of armor in my mechanics school, but it would take too much time and i'd need real strenght (what i'll never have).
my friend once made a pair of gauntlets, he took like two weeks and about 2 tausends rings to do them

    anyway, awesome stuff +1

    1. You dont know how long I thought this was a spoiler looking at the 4 knights armour for lol.
    2. If you keep this up ARSP your sig is gonna run out of room. I would suggest making a thread listing all of your projects and simply linking that in your sig.
