That's almost always a no win situation for a friend or confidant. You're definitely not useless. Support networks are always important. I'll keep my fingers crossed that your friend would allow you to speak candidly without feeling like they had to remove you as a support. Maybe you can't help directly but a sincere discussion about the issues at hand can be helpful. I stress the word "can" as I've had some experience in the area and it all depends on how the person views you.

But just make sure you are there for them, for when they need you.
I had a bad time with some things near the end of last year and having friends there for you sure help make things better.
