Rapier and Katana guide. Empty Rapier and Katana guide.

Post by bloodpixel Tue Aug 14, 2012 9:55 am

Since I love these two types of weapons so much I shall write a guide for these weapons. And uh...yeah.

Rapiers are generally thrusting type weapons with quick attacks and pokes. Their damage is rather weak but can be buffed to do some massive damage, and they have a very strong critical attack. Because success with the rapier usually relies on critical hits, you're going to need to learn all the back stab and parry maneuvers if you want to succeed.

The running R1 is no doubt one of the rapiers greatest move. It's a fast, two hitting move that if buffed with a spell can reach a damage of about 650 points of damage. You probably won't hit anything with the regular R1, but it's relatively safe so use it if you want. The rolling R1 is a quick thrust. I believe the two-handed version is quicker but I might be wrong about that. The rapier has this function where you can hide behind your shield and poke your enemy to death, which is a useful tactic and can frustrate your enemy easily.

Now that we talked about some general rapier stuff let's get into some specifics shall we?

    Rapier
The rapier is probably the most basic of the rapier class. It has a B rating in dex and a D in strength. It's R2 is basically a stronger slower version of its R1. It has a high critical damage, and that's all that's really notable about it. When using this weapon it's best to use the running R1 and R2.

    Ricard's Rapier
Personally my favorite weapon, the Ricard's Rapier is awesomely stylish. It scales very well with dex, being the only rapier that has an A rating in it. It has an interesting move; the R2 combo attack. This combo is actually pretty useless. Though it does massive damage, it takes up a crapton of stamina, can be easily parried, and leaves you open for backstabs. Pretty useless by itself, but I heard that you can replace a riposte with a two handed variant of it but I keep forgetting to test if you can lol. I believe it has the second highest physical damage if you put your dex to 40.

    Mail Breaker
Don't know anything about this lol. It has the highest critical rate if the stats are correct though.

    Velka's Rapier
A weapon that has both magic and physical damage, Velka's Rapier is a unique rapier. Its R2 attack are actually slashes rather than pokes, and they use less stamina than some other rapiers. The move is useful and fun as hell to use. It has range on par with the Estoc and is fast. However, its greatest weakness lies in the fact that you can't buff it, making it less useful that other rapiers. Still a good back up weapon if your main runs out of a buff.

    Estoc
With the highest physical damage out of any rapier, the Estoc is probably the most interesting rapier. Its critical damage is actually rather low, and it has longer reach than the other rapiers, except for perhaps the Velka's. Estoc probably benefits the most out of a buff, since it's more reliant on regular hits than critical attacks. Its one handed R2 is a sweep attack and the 2-handed is a thrust, both of which are very useful.

    Rings
Hornet ring: Does about 1700 damage buffed, and kills just about anything.
Leo Ring: It increases counter hit damage 40%. This makes trading blows a bit more worth it because if a counter hit lands it's gonna hurt a lot.

That's enough about Rapiers for now. Lets move on to the next weapon shall we?

    Katanas
Let's face it, katanas are goddamn awesome. If fiction is to be believed, it can cut through tanks like butter. It can go through a thousand fights without any sort of care. If you somehow lose while you have this sword, the sword will always land pointy tip in. Having one immediately raises style points. Double points if you're dual wielding them. Triple points if they are a cool color. Quadruple points if they're lasers.

    Rapier and Katana guide. No-more-heroes-2-dual-katanas
    Hell yes.

However, does this also apply to the katanas of Dark Souls? Let's find out.

Katanas are a great weapon for pvp. Good damage, fast, and with decent range, it is a favorite amongs many pvpers. Its rolling R1 is a quick sweep and its running R1 is a quick lunge. It can cause bleed damage, though that is pretty useless because you can just dodge through the attack to reset bleed. It benefits massively from buffs. With many strengths and few weaknesses, a katana is a deadly weapon.

    Uchigatana
The uchi. Nothing too notable noting about. It's one-hand R2 is a thrust attack. It's slow and you will rarely hit anything with it. The two-handed R2 is even worse. It's better to use the R1 attacks.

    Iaito
The Iaito appears to be the more popular katana. Though it has less damage and range than the Uchi, the R2 is a quick-draw style move that sweeps and moves a surprising distance. However an experienced opponent could probably dodge that move easily. This can also be used to dead-angle. An effective move that is difficult to parry or punish.

    Washing Pole
Basically an Uchigatana that got a growth spurt. The Washing Pole is comically long and you will usually see it clipping into other objects. It scales poorly, but with 40/40 str/dex builds it has about 426 damage. The Washing Pole can be very difficult to deal with. Its ridiculous range gives you an advantage to almost any fast weapon and even greatswords. Its speed is the same as the other katanas, making it very hard for people to get in on you. Make sure to keep a good distance between you and the opponent and you should be winning fights.

    Chaos Blade
A blade that eats away at your health every time you hit the opponent, the Chaos Blade takes away 20 points of health every time you hit the opponent, or if they roll through it. This can be very bad for you since this game has a lot of rolling and if you aren't careful you're going to kill yourself before they kill you. Make sure to have a backup weapon just in case. The chaos blade has better range than both the Iaito and the Uchigatana. It has the fastest bleed build from the katanas. It has better physical damage, but it can't be buffed. It's one handed R2 is a sweep move somewhat similar to the Iaito, and the two-handed R2 is a slow move where you swing the katana in a downward motion which slams your opponents to the ground. Though useless for the most part, you can land that move after a back stab, granted there is enough lag. It can't be buffed, but if you don't have any stats invested in either faith of intelligence, this may be a katana for you.

All for right now. Might add some other weapon types later.

As passionate Iaito user I have to disagree with "The Iaito appears to be the more popular katana." at least in PvP I rarely see Iaitos around, mostly Chaos Blade and Washingpole.
I always get thrilled when I see Iaito user so I can test my skills with him/her, but this rarely happens : (

you need to add the Chaos Blade has a faster bleed build up then all the other Katanas

and the washing pole requires 20 str.

Chaos blade has a longer reach then iaito and uchi does more physical damage and has a faster bleed build up. But is by far the worst katana.

    Sense.. that makes none.

Chaos Blade inflicts 20 damage on you each time even if they roll through, does far by worse damage than a buffed katana, bleed build up is useless, and it's R2 attacks are not very useful.
Also I made so many typos in the chaos blade. Jesus. Maybe I should sleep.

Bloodpixel wrote:However, like it was said before, washing pole has weak damage. If your opponent decides to trade blows with you, it won't end well. Make sure to keep a good distance between you and the opponent and you should be fine for the most part.
The thing is, washing pole is not a dex build weapon even though it's a katana. But it is definitely one of the best weapons for 40/40 builds. With 40 str and dex, the AR is 426 which is the second highest of all unbuffed katanas. Combine it with speed and ridiculous range and bleed build up... And it is even buffable!

And about chaos blade. Fastest bleed build up, highest AR of all unbuffed katanas and good range mean that it doesn't need buffs to be effective. Sure, you can do better damage with any buffed katana, but that requires remarkable stat investment in either faith or intelligence. For pure dex builds, it is THE katana. And the 20 damage? Give me a break... If you actually die to it, you haven't fought well in the first place.

has never happened to me, i always switch to either Lifehunt Scythe or Great Lord Great sword when life gets low. nothing is more satisfying then getting 2-3 good hits with chaos blade then switch to life hunt and proc the bleed

as for the 20 damage i actually LOVE it. i use the red tear stone ring, and some times when fighting my life gets super low where 1 more good hit and im dead but isn't quite low enough to proc the ring, the chaos blade and chip damage from green crest shield help me proc the ring

You actually get bleed damage? That's amazing. I'm not even being sarcastic how the hell did you do it? Every single opponent I've fought has never, ever gotten any bleed damage. They just use the bleed reset.
