This may be a matter of opinion, though from experience, I consider
it a matter of fact. The best overall weapon in the game is...
    the Washing Pole.
Being a Japanese game it kind of makes sense to me that a Katana
would come out on top, and from my own play experience it
    does, go figure.

WP is ok... It doesnt have much AR and it seems kinda fragile to me as compared to CB or other kats where every hit feels so powerful...

Toss up between WP and DSS, both are ridiculous. The washing pole is weak, but buff it and its easily the least fun weapon to fight against that I've seen yet, where the dss is more consistent.

Here is a very fun Forrest Hunter build...
    http://www.mugenmonkey.com/darksouls/?c=3976470236853706
I've effectively taken out level 120+ with this without healing.
Low level Gank squads are a piece of P*SS.
If you encounter a noob however I would switch out the chaos
for an unupgraded Washing Pole which you can get by speaking to
    that Forrest guy.

BKGA and MLGS are also to be strongly considered. I know they can be seen as rather nooby weapons, but there's a good reason why they're so widely used.

For Phantom Damage, the DSS is unbeatable. I loathe that thing.

It's situational though. The best weapon is strategy, afterall

    Against Turtles - Shotel

    For
Strength - Probably the Claymore, though the Great Lord Greatsword is also a very good low-strength weapon
Dex - Probably the Chaos Blade or the BSS
    Mixed - Murakumo/Pike

I consider the Claymore the overall best weapon in that class.

Its the reach that does it. The bkga is evil. Stronger, but slower and shorter and I'd say thats where it falls short imo. The mlgs is too short for me to consider it.

    All my opinion of course.

Bleed is one of the key factors which make the washing pole no.1.
I've killed hackers with what must be 99000hp, try doing that with
the DSS, turtles also offer no threat.

The BKGA sure is strong, but it's predictable (mainly because it's the gankers favoured weapon). Every time I see it in the forest, I smile from ear-to-ear. Insta-pary mode! silly

That more comes from the type of people who use it. If a skilled player used it, well I'd be pretty worried personally.

Also the MLGS is too short forum? You're forgetting it goes hand in hand with sorcery, and has a ranged attack which I would think more than make up for that. Also the pure magic damage is very good.

I have to say it's a difficult thing to declare a best weapon.. It depends on playstyle, then again there are weapons which you can give to people and it will improve their win/loss ratio just by virtue of being such an excellent weapon.

Which its very good at, especially in 2 hands. I really need a build for it again, its devastating.

Predictablity is in the user, not the weapon. In dks at least.

I might be biased serious, I hate greatswords. Neither the pure power or pure speed I want in a weapon. I can't use it to control the battle field with the threat of immediate death like I can with my dgm or a buffed washing pole.

Yeah, in the right hands it would be deadly! I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't just R1 spam or BS fish with it though. I think that's mainly because the good players tend to shy away from it due to it's rep, which is a shame. It's a really nice looking weapon!

I think moveset is the determining factor that's sets the good weapons apart from others. The BKGA moveset I find to be too limited. The 2-handed attacks lack the range and speed of the one-handed attacks, and the one-handed attacks are just too predictable.

The R2's are rubbish as well, and the jump attack just begs for a BS

Its a reactionary weapon (imo), unlike the wp, a good user has to predict the opponents attacks and counter if they want to beat a skilled enemy.

How I use it anyway, and how it beat me the last time I lost to it.

Very true, but when the weapon you are using limits your attack options to what realistically is 1 or 2 attacks, you become much easier to predict.

Since noone has said it yet, the BSS gets my vote! An obvious choice, but it's a hella good weapon! Excellent moveset, perfectly reasonable damage, and it's shiny silly

Compared to the washing pole.....................................................................................? I can't see it, not that you're wrong though.

To be clear "best," while subjective, is not the same as favorite. My favorite is the dgm, but simply switching to the dss will still win me more fights than the dgm ever will.

BKGA, it has the damage of a UG weapon with the speed of a GS and the range of the Zwei. It's balance is out of whack.

Perhaps that's a slightly biased answer silly In which case, as much as I hate to say it, DSS gets my vote. That hurt silly

I do think that the BSS has the best moveset in the game though.

I feel the best weapon doesn't really exist, oh sure there are unusably bad weapons, but I think the weapon, as everything else about the build, gets its strength from other parts of the build.

However, if you are asking, in a sense, which weapon I would take on a naked character with 99 in all stats, it would be the Demon's Spear, because it has the most range. Certain weapons really require poise to work really well, some really need buffs to add DPS, some need armor so when attacks are traded, they don't loose more HP. There is no best weapon unless you define the exact characteristics of everything else.

Of course, I can name some of the better build objects, but I'm sure that everyone that plays any PvP in Dark Souls knows exactly what I'd say.

If I choose a weapon based on my experiences, which usually means they are well built builds, I have a personal dislike for any Katana weapon, or really any bleed weapon. Its not really OP for that reason, but as I play naked, 3-4 hits can make me bleed, and even though I can usually roll through it, it forces me to play more rolly and defensive. I find that most weapons that have an aux effect are pretty good, for the reason that you can actually hit someone while rolling, but that's just me.

The DSS stops hitting hard compared to other spears at 40/40, and it needs an incredible stat investment to reach max potential. Seriously, a +14 pike hits harder at 40/40 in almost all cases. The DSS is longer, yes, but it's not all that scary next to other spears imo. It's spears in general that are very powerful weapons. I'd actually be more afraid to face the Demon's Spear due to it having such an incredible range than the DSS which has better damage.

Edit: Ice, I used to think some weapons required poise, especially Greatswords, until I faced a 0 poise build using a bastard sword who was really good at sneaking in hits from the exact edge of his range and avoiding everything I could throw at him. I eventually beat him, but I was way OP for forest hunting at that point, it was not a fair contest and I only won by luck. Just goes to show the how is more important than the what in terms of weapon use.

DSS is longer guys. Its been confirmed, the dss also, while unbuffable, hits harder that the unbuffed pike if we're talking 27/40/30 or 40/40/30 to allow a buff on said pike, just barely though.

And I'm walking about, one weapon, naked, nothing else. I choice a fast weapon with the best range for obvious reasons.
