Meaning of 'toon' Empty Meaning of 'toon'

    Post by IV_Mark_VI Tue Aug 14, 2012 12:50 pm

I haven't been involved in a gaming site in many, many years. Dark souls is the first game I have enjoyed in a long time; I mean, really enjoyed.

Bioshock was another awesome one, but it didn't have the layers of pvp to draw me in.

Anyways. I haven't seen characters being called 'toons' before. As in cartoons I'm assuming. Anyone know where this came from? It doesn't really seem right to me, doesn't fit. They aren't cartoons.

Avatar would fit better, or character. Why toon?

Edit: Been looking it up online, and it seems to come from World of Warcraft, where the characters actually look cartoonish. Still, doesn't make sense here.

Edit2: I just have the sinking feeling it's another level of loss in the mastery (or lack thereof) of the English language. I've heard people say they were going to go "AWOL" on someone... is this something similar? In that people just don't have a good grasp of what different words mean and apply them incorrectly?

Yeah my friend said it was from WoW, I think it sounds so stupid, so I usually use char or character.

I dont understand the 'toon' thing either. I just call it my 'character' in dark souls. This toon word is not one i use. Toon reminds me of like...bugs bunny. Not a sword weilding demon slaying world invading warrior archmage. To each their own. But its my character, not a toon. Even the WOW version still seems like calling it a toon would be degrating. Toons are for kids in my mind. (Then again we are adults playing video games, a generation ago that was absurd and videogames were for kids...generational gap?)

I find it odd to i guess is the simple version of my longwinded post. Love this game. Can't wait for the dlc to come out so my character can die some more and get invaded by some toons.

@Pesth: I know that when they say 'toon' they mean their character. To me, it could easily be 'banana' meaning character. Both are not characters. A cartoon is not a character in dark souls, and neither is a banana.

Cartoon is closer, and I admit that's a bit of a strawman fallacy, but calling a dark souls character a toon is not correct.

WoW characters do look cartoonish though.

In spanish, we mostly said 'muñeco' to all the characters in any game. Toon = muñeco makes perfect sense to me because we also say 'muñecos' to the cartoons on TV.

In English, a cartoon is a specific kind of art, of which Dark Souls characters are not.

Perfect. From now on I shall refer to my characters as Bananas. Has a nice ring to it.

I think people settle in to using phrases/words without putting much though into them. I think loosely the dark souls characters can be thought of as cartoons, but in looking at that definition it does not seem right. "A simple drawing showing the features of its subjects in an exaggerated way". In this case it seems to have become readily accepted slang. Personally I don't like "toon" as for most of the afforementioned points. Toon does not sound very BA.

I know. It means Absent without leave, as in, someone has taken off (possibly deserted).

They use this to mean "going crazy". It annoys me that they use it incorrectly.

if the implied intent is understood then theres no need to nit pick. just roll with it. I might make a new banana later on tonight, might even duel some toons when im done.

Oh, I had no idea it came from WoW. I assumed it was a term that made more sense to people from Europe or Australia. lol I understood it was short for cartoon, but I began to assume that the use of "cartoon" when talking about RPG characters made more sense, culturally, to people from some foreign location.

Doesn't make any sense to me for DaS. Sticking to 'character'. happy

"Poor bastard" could work too, in the context of Dark Souls.
