    Bows: A comparisson in frames.

Post by Rifter7 on Tue Aug 14, 2012 6:48 am

Hello. I’ve recently done some testing regarding the firing
speeds of the bows in Dark Souls.

First off, I’ll explain how I did this. Using each of the
bows in the game, I recorded my player firing 3 consecutive shots. From there I
transferred the videos onto my computer, where I measured their speeds in
frames. There are 30 frames in a second, so when I refer to them in the post
    below keep that in mind.

The point at which I actually used to measure the speeds
was also fairly simple. As soon as the trigger is pulled, an arrow appears in
the player’s hand, as if out of thin air. It’s at this point that I start the
measurement. I ended the measurement at the split second the player’s hand
    released the arrow.

For the first part, it was a simple draw then fire. The second
measurement had the same start, but instead I ended the testing at the release
    of the third arrow fired.

Alright, without anymore delay, here are my results.

    First test

    Shortbow: . . . . . .27 frames
    Composite bow: .27 frames
    Darkmoon bow: .27 frames

    Longbow: . . . . . .37 frames
    BB of Pharis : . . .37 frames

    Second test

    Shortbow:. . . . . .126 frames
    Composite bow: 126 frames
    Darkmoon bow: .126 frames

    Longbow: . . . . . 152 frames
    BB of Pharis : . . 152 frames

So, as you can see the bows and their variations are
actually in fact re-skinned versions of two separate animations. They can be
split into the Shortbow and the Longbow group in terms of speed.

And that’s about all there is too it! If you find
yourself at a crossroad when it comes to deciding what bow to use, I hope my
information will help you choose the right one for the build.

Interesting, have you tested this multiple times? I always thought the composite was the best bow but it might be the DM Bow.

no i just recorded it, put it on my computer and use a video player that shows me the frames per second. i can then compare them.

there's no need to retest it.. i can.. but..?

Well there could be multiple factors in this. Did you try all bows on like a deprived xD without leveling at all? Reason I ask is for all we know stats could play a part in it.

here's my character build... i mean i don't have the same gear or anything, this build's changed drastically- but the stats are the same.

i don't meet the req's to fire a dmb bow. it wasn't acting different tho.

I really like the DMB on any of my builds that buffs a dex weapon. I'm pretty sure it's still worse than composite, but when 80% of the time I'm just shooting poison arrows anyways...

Thanks for the test rifter, I always "felt" like I was handi-capable while trying to use BBoPharis and now I know why.

Thanks for sharing the results of a rather definitive test, +1 to you.

Side note, could you do the DSB? I know its slow but I'm curious exactly how slow!

uhmm.. i'm not even sure if any of my characters fit the requirements to use it tbh.

    i can look into it.

yeah i don't have a single character with 20 strength lmao.

would you rather i test something we know is super slow, or test something like dung pies and poison kunais?

i've been wondering if those were faster than the bows, but i don't think they are.

Oh man I knew it! I'm so surprised so many builds love the Composite Bow so, when I found my love in the Short Bow +1 FOR SURE!

Interesting note, I'm not human, I was doing some speed tests on the Halberd and the Scythe, I did 10 tests each using my phone as a stopwatch.

    Halberd
    .52
    .52
    .52
    .52
    .52
    .52
    .52
    .52
    .52
    .52
    .52

    Scythe
    .59
    .59
    .59
    .59
    .59
    .59
    .59
    .59
    .59
    .59

So as you can see, the Scythe has 7 millisecond slower attack, and I must be a cyborg wolf thing, because I was amazed I would get the exact same millisecond '20' times in a row, no kidding. I should do more testing, but your version is much more exact.
*note, if someone does test this, and finds the numbers to be a little higher, it would make sense, as I was hitting the ground, which is a better way to test weapons that can hit the ground, and I'm not even 100% sure these numbers are right, I was so surprised I got it the same so many times that I was like mindblown and forgot the exact numbers (except it was the same, and the variance of .07 was correct).

i'd like to test the halberd vs the gscythe too. it'd be a rather simple test honestly, every attack into a roll. as soon as the attack starts the measurement begins, as soon as the roll starts it ends.

i'll def try that one unless someone beats me too it.

check the above post.. i have a tendency to edit things.. a lot.

i'd probably be at 3k posts by now if i didn't ahaha.

Although I would be able to test that in a few seconds, your version is less inhuman than mine and probably much more accurate. Important note, if you hit a vase (etc) even the hung up bodies in the Painted World, you won't stagger, and hit them as normal.

wait so what am i testing then? i was going to test a wiff to a roll because those are the biggest dangers..

am i testing that and an actual hit to roll?

Well I thought you wanted to test a hit, and not a whiff, so I suggested attacking pots. I think whiff testing would be easier and pretty comparable though.

i can do both. i'll just smack the mobs outside of the fire, it's no prob.

they'll die in one hit tho, so i wont be able to test multiple strikes.

just.. lemme take a break man that last one took me 2 hours.
i know it doesn't look like much but i have to think well before i begin recording to make sure i'm doing it right, record it to get it right and basically not eff up with one hand, get it on the comp, load it up, play with the footage, compare the frames to find the exact start and end, subtract the values and then get it onto a text document.

and then theres the whole making the thread look sane.. i usually just ramble to myself when i'm doing this stuff and try different stuff out, not used to actually sharing you know? haha.

I knew the DM bow, Short Bow, and the composite were same speeds. Thanks for confirming that Rifter.

i had some japanese player outshooting me with the thing and i was like.. my god, he knows something i DONT! let the testing COMMENCE!

turns out i was just being an idiot and didn't retime my shots..

but hey, i'm here to please i guess.
