Open World Games with Zombies Empty Open World Games with Zombies

    Post by vixder/pennywise Wed Apr 18, 2012 10:38 am

I am looking for an Open-World game, which deals with the Zombie-Apocalypse (and not just has Zombies in it like Dark Souls or Fallout 3).
So far I can think of four games: Dead Island, Dead Rising 2, Yakuza: Dead Souls and Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare.
Here is a quick run down on what I want:

Atmosphere: Scary. The best thing would be a recreation of the first 15 minutes of the "Dawn of the Dead"-remake.
Grafiks: I don´t consider this the most important point, but it should create a realistic world. Bugs and glitches tend to kill that.
Sound: Very important. Scary soundeffects, realistic gun sounds, spooky music and so on and so on. Bad Voice acting I can live with because
Story: the genre is based on B-movies. I am not looking for an interesting story or belivable characters. But neither should get in the way of the atmosphere.
Gameplay: Well, an RPG would be nice, but is not necersary.

Does any of the before mentioned games come close or did I miss a game?
    Thanks for your help.

I played RE3, Veronica and 5. I am aware, that I missed out on 4, but I am gonne play that at some point (when its 10 bucks on psn winking ).
While 3 and 5 sucked (3 is not a bad game, but I have personal reasons to hate it) Veronica was awesome, but this type of linear, puzzle-based game is not what I am looking for right now.

I like Dead Island a lot. It has some bugs but is fairly RPGish - you earn XP, go up levels, buy new skills, and so on. You can also modify equipment or built items with recipes you discover around the game. Coop is also a lot of fun, although that's where most of the bugs are found. You can either sync up with friends or just randomly pop in and out of strangers' games. One of my favorite aspects is that you can jump in vehicles and cruise around running over zombies.

It's set on a tropical island though, and while it has creepy areas and plenty of gore it may not be as visually dark as you're looking for. The sound effects are great though, you hear zombies rustling around in the bushes, or even roaring off in the distance. Plenty of gameplay vids on youtube, so check them out.

It reminds me a lot of Borderlands. At least system-wise. I liked it a lot also.

    @ plasticandrage
And that´s the problem. Everyone says so. I find it hard not to get to hyped about it. I bet all you guys played it when it came out and now it´s shelved in your mind as an (or THE) iconic action game of the PS2 era, because I guess it revolutionized the genre. I was never a fan of the series , but only because I never owned a console until the PS3 and playing RE3 on PC is responsable for my undying hatred for this game.
If I go into this game now, thinking its the best of whatever, I am bound to be disapionted. I heard stuff about Ashley and I don´t think I´ll ever enjoy this kind of protection-missions.
But anyway, the day will come when I´ll try it out.

    @ beflower
I think it will be Dead Island for me, but I heard realy bad things about it. There are supposed to be game-breakers in it, for example you enter a hut and are unable to leave because of a bug or something like that?

    But I loved Borderlands....

If you liked 5 you'll like 4. While I really enjoyed the games prior to 4, because I'd been a fan at the time of their release, when their systems were still cutting edge and not the outdated games they are now. 4 was the game when they initially altered the system to reflect the way it operates in 5. Specifically the behind the shoulder camera view. It's a lot like 5 except you're not followed by a constant companion, which in my opinion is a good thing. I'm not a huge fan of Sheva. While protecting Ashley can be a little annoying at times, for the most part she does a pretty good job of staying behind you during fights. The game also often provides you with areas for her to hide during the larger scale fights. Like large chests or dumpster like things, so you just give her the "hide" command when you enter the area and it essentially takes her out of the equation. Also the time you spend with her in game probably only really represents about 1/6 of the game. I wouldn't base my opinion of it on that at all. I actually own a copy of it for both Gamecube and PS2, and I would still buy it off the PSN at its current price if I got the itch to play it again, just to experience it on a new system. It's that good. I'm sure I'm not alone in this perspective either.

I understand what you're saying about hype usually > than the game itself. But some games deserve/totally live up to their hype. I think this is one of those cases.

Yes, Dead Island is a lot like borderlands, which I also really liked. Regarding the bugs, I haven't encountered any game breaking ones yet, but that wouldn't surprise me. My major gripes are more design related in that I don't really like monster leveling, i.e., stronger and stronger zombies, many weapons degrade too quickly and cost a lot to repair, and coop has a lot of hiccups including problems with quest sharing and randomly getting kicked out of games. But the price is presumably well down at this point, and I still see a lot of online activity. So it may be a good gamble if you really need to scratch that zombie itch.

If it helps, I still remember the moment when I was hooked: I'd collected a bunch of bottles of booze at the beach tourist bars, and traded them for some molotov cocktails. I then got cornered by a bunch of zombies, including a really powerful "tank" zombie. Low on life and stamina and with my best weapon nearly broken, I desperately threw a molotov cocktail at them, and ... well, you'll see what I mean.

One of my friends actually just bought a copy of DI and I played through in co-op with him. The co-op is still absolutely hopping. If you're thinking about buying I'd do it sooner rather than later though.

Dead Island is a total let down IMO. While it intially seems great with the breaking down of items and the lack of guns. You soon fond yourself throwing around lightning daggers and such, and falling into repetative actions to kill the Tall bruiser guys.

Was good for a while. Stopped being a good game rreally quickly.

Though its not an open world gae I suugest giveing the old Resident Evils a try. 0,1,2 ETC all were good games.

EDIT!- If you like Cheesy Grammar, Sterotypical characters, and really bad dialogue, and a woman screaming "LEON HEEEELP!" all the time. Resident Evil 4 is your game.

Resident Evil is the embodiement of horror in zombie form. No other games can top them. SHame they aren't open world though.

OK, so I downloaded Resi 4 on PSN and played the first hour. It was a good choice. Maybe not open world, but classic zombie action so far. Nothing like the most unatmospheric game of all time Resi 5. Thanks for the tip.

I was hooked after the first village sequence. At first I tried running around on the streets, but when they circled me I ran out of ammo. I flew into a house, ran up the stairs, grabed the shotgun. By then they already had the house surrounded and came threw tge windows. I blew a passage through them and just when the chainsaw came down on me I jumped out of the wimdow. Not knowing where to go I ran for the tower and climbed it, thinking "stupid, stupid". With no where else to go I grabed the shells on the top and jumped back down, to face what was coming. With my last shell the chainsaw-guy fell to the ground and the church bell rang. I was saved.

While searching the village, I realized how diffrent this all could have played out. There were numerous diffrent paths and ladders to take and places to hide. I´m looking forward to my second playthrough.

Dude just you wait until you get to some of the awesome live action sections the fights are epic!

Though you will get tired of Ash screaming "LEON HELP!" and probably shoot her more than the Ganados.

I'm still waiting for a proper zombie survival game. Where guns are the last resort because they draw attention, where 1 bite is fatal, where finding and or defending food and shelter is the top priority, where the only storyline is "dont die".

Not alone there. I always thought a GTA style zombie game would be great. Where you get like a massive sandbox urban environment that's alive with undead and NPC's trying to survive.

Dont get me wrong, multiplayer could be amazing, and i want friendly and "friendly" npcs with personalities and backgrounds. I'd like starting skill sets, Ie i was a locksmith so i can break in/out of places very quickly at the start or i'm a 10th degree blackbelt so i can disable a zombie/kill a person in 2 seconds. stuff like that, not a binding class system but starting bonuses that have a huge impact, anyone can get that good at whatever skill but you start that way.

Yes, sell them. There are precious stones that you'll want to hold on to because they combine with other treasures and increase their value, but you'll be able to tell which they are. They'll look like they fit into something. Either little ovular gems called cats eyes or little triangular gems, whose names I can't remember. You're inspiring me. Think I might dust off the old Gamecube
