Okay, anyone else feel like Tomb of Giants (and catacombs) is just a big horror survival thing in the game? You have a creepy atmosphere, creepy OST, reviving enemies, enemies hiding in every corner, ambushes, and all that. Think about it:

    1) You only go down through this level and you're constantly being chased by skeletons that don't seem to know when to stay down as well as exploding skulls, a Hyena, perilous bridges, crazy traps and a whole bunch of other stuff that you can't quite see coming.

    2) Pinwheel, a weird looking necromancer with 3 masks, crazy lanterns, creepy OST and hanging dead bodies. residing inside a giant tomb which you had to fall into with practically no indications of a way back out.

    4) Tomb of Giants which is pretty much complete and utter darkness where you have to hold a lantern for a shield to see if you're not prepared (and it gives you the creeps not having your trusty shield) and to top it off you have giant skeletons with swords and bows twice the length of your body who seem to retain pretty much the speed of a normal body while still being hulks and being able to appear literally right in front of your face since you can't see anything in front of you!.

    5) To make matters worse, you have multiple pinwheels in the end with plague babies a horde of skeleton babies which is disturbing. Then you have to cross a big blockade that seems to scream: "For your sake; do not enter!"

    6) Then finally, you have to jump down ANOTHER pit with no indication as to how to climb back up while you have this Lord of the Dead brandishing a giant sword at you while it sends its minions on to you while performing insane high pitched screams and launching giant shockwave attacks that seem to make you want to run for you life, all while having to note that this guy is pretty much 1 giant corpse that decided to glue a bunch of other corpses on itself, making him pretty macabre.

    7) Nito has one of the creepiest OST due to the fact that it seems to send chills down your spine more than show what an epic boss he is!

    8) Let's not forget the matter there is no simple way to get out of their or telport there. You leave, you go through this whole process again. No lordvessel? K, enjoy your time getting out of that skeleton infested cave.

So, I have come to the conclusion that the entire catacombs is one big survival horror level!

(Come on, you have to admit that place was giving you serious chills and paranoia during your first play through)

Nah, it's cool. I walked through the Catacombs and the Tomb of The Giants like a tank, then smacked Nito left and right like rag doll. By the way, what is Pinwheel? Must be something so insignificant that I can't even remember.

Jokes aside, I agree that it be quite creepy if you're going through the arena for the first while still at the low level (1-9) and lacking the essential equipment. Especially when you have a bunch of souls and ten humanities. The Catacombs is okay, I supposed, but the Tomb of The Giants. Also, trying to turning the brightness down to 3 or 2.

Yeah the tomb of giants was always the creepiest area for me even with a sunlight maggot helm. I still have no clue how to get through it sometime.

I absolutely love how you described the 2 areas. You gave good detail on how the placed fit the horror theme. +1

Get down there, at SL 20 to save reah, without the LV and without turning any of the catacombs bridges the right way, after having rested at the first bonfire in the ToG. Then you know the real meaning of survival.

    totaly agree with OP.

I remember my first playtrough and i just finished izalith and was mentaly preparing myself to go to the cata/ToG the next day after work.
I decided to watch a vid on youtube of the catacombs that evening before going to bed and that night i had the worst nightmare about being in the cataombs and i couldnt find my way out!
when i woke up i still felt the horror of that nightmare.
That evening when i got home from work i decided to not go to that place yet and do another lord soul area just because i still had the creeps of that nightmare lol!.

Now after playing through the game like 10-15 times i can just run throug the whole cata/ToG without any light or killing any enemy big grin.

Like most of the annoying areas, it grew on me after I knew what to do and my confidence grew. I didn't have as much trouble with Pinwheel or Nito because I use Fall Control and even without the lantern, I had Cast Light to help me through without relying on equipment. This is one of those areas where the designers definitely show how much playtesting they did - there is a lantern on a corpse and it still drops from skeleton mages, so you have more than one chance to get it. Once you have a light source, the most problematic drop in the first section becomes obvious, and even the boss scenarios are well-balanced: if you drop and rush Pinwheel and attack him with spells or weapons immediately, you should win very quickly (if you don't and take a cautious approach, you get punished as his or her copies become more numerous - just like any mage character) and the movement speed of Nito is slow enough that you can deal with the skeletons while dodging when he issues his special movement indicators. Nito felt less powerful than any of the other Lords to me - and fittingly, the description of his Lord Soul says he gave much of his power to death so wasn't as strong as he used to be, but still is potent enough to satiate the Lordvessel. The devs made sure to include prism stones just in case you don't have or didn't bother to equip your lantern. It's not my favorite area, but it also felt like the least threatening place to attack of all the Lord Soul areas. No wonder Nico and Vince were overcome down there - I doubt any of them had lanterns, there is no miracle that provides light and I doubt they had divine weapons to put skeletons down for the good. RIP.

I was so ready to be done with this area by the time I figured all this out that I counted myself as lucky to find a white summon sign for a tank to help with Nito. While he took out the skeletons, I focused my eldritch might on him, burning away his skeletons and tattered robes and beat him. Then I got an XBL message asking for help from the same guy so in the name of jolly cooperation, I went through the entire area all over again to meet up with him and defeat Nito for a second time.

BTW I've been getting item drops on my newest character like crazy with normal levels of Item Find yet the baby skeletons have never dropped a humanity for this character lol. I sometimes wonder if there are hidden stats governing this based upon character creation. I got a channeler's trident after beating my third Channeler in the Duke's Archive, a Skull Lantern after killing the first Skeleton Mage, Crystal straight sword from one of the first Crystal warriors in te Duke Achive and complete Silver and Black Knight's sets from just going through areas normally.

The corpse with the skull lantern right next to where you fall down? Assuming the 2 corpses next to it are theirs from an alternate world it means they did indeed have a lantern.
And one of them wields the crescent axe, a divine weapon. they are also clerics, I highly doubt their weapons werent divine.
