Spear and Shield oddities Empty Spear and Shield oddities

Post by OrnsteinBro Tue Aug 07, 2012 9:50 am

So I was invading Anor Londo a while back and I invaded a world of this guy and his white phantom. After a couple failed lagbs's they went into turtling mode, so I just made a test poke into the host's shield since he was standing in front.

Now, they were lined up nicely in a row and I was close enough such that I was poking both of them (through the host's shield, of course) with my spear.

The thing is, the both of them had their shields up and the host was in front, but when I poked I was actually dealing damage to the phantom through his guard.

    Graphical representation:

Me ( V direction of poke)
    Host (shield up)
    Phantom (shield up) (getting damaged)

I assume the phantom was just as confused as I was because he circled backwards with his shield still up. I poked again and somehow the damage went through his shield, and he died. The host didn't seem to realize till the guy died because he only started flasking once his buddy keeled over. At no point in time did either party let their shields down (until the phantom died of course).

Has anyone experienced this before? I wasn't aware that dead angling was possible with spears, much less through another person's guard. I'm not sure if it's reproducible or just a product of lag, because I've never invaded any other host and phantoms stupid enough to line up in a neat row for me to try it on them.

Whereabouts in Anor Londo where you? Might seem like a strange question, but on the rotatable lift section there are strange physics indeed! I've killed through shields there before, and it's also impossible to be backstabbed there. Weird.

Edit: But yes, you can dead angle with spears. It's even easier to do it if you offhand your spear, and keep to the side.

It was in the great hall, they'd already cleared out the silver knight and the two WOTG giants at the start.

P.S: Not related, but the elevator is even weirder; once I got invaded while I was in the Darkmoon tomb, and had some invisible guy (literally invisible- no fog ring shenanigans- I couldn't see him or lock on, but he was definitely hitting me) come down the elevator and start attacking with what I assume was a murakumo (judging by the slash sounds).

I just gave up on fighting him properly and spammed R1 in all directions and barely killed him. Messaged him after, apparently he could see me but I couldn't see him.

And then there are the times when you fight people on the elevator and they start climbing invisible flights of stairs.

    Crazy freaking elevator

But yeah, this wasn't anywhere near the elevator.

Yep, spear dead angling. It's a nifty trick to use. It's pretty interesting the number of weapons you can dead angle with, straight swords in particular are very interesting.
