Fighting laggers in duels Empty Fighting laggers in duels

Post by OrnsteinBro Sun Aug 05, 2012 3:59 pm

Hi, I'm new to these forums. Anyway, I was wondering how to deal with people with lag (i.e intermittent teleporting, sudden sliding movements without movement of feet, instant WOG, sudden bursts of attacks, and general frustrations).

I suppose I should give a more detailed description of the 'general frustrations' part. I can fight fine against American players. Of note, there is some lag fighting against Americans, but it is much easier landing a hit because you don't need to attack as early, and the risk/chance of predicting wrongly is not as high.

The problem is that when I encounter Europeans (British, French, German, Spaniards, Norwegians) or Australians my connection just seems to go to all hell.

Hits that punish heavy weapon R1s (zwei, great club) early turn out blocked/not registering. Also (with any weapon really) occasionally it's possible for my opponent to make one attack in a trade (as in, one slash/poke animation is played onscreen) and I'll get hit twice in the span of that one attack.

Furthermore, the risk of lag BS (unintentional and intentional, due to situational warping) is also much greater.

The evasion rate is also very inconsistent when it comes to Europeans/Australians. Assuming a same direction roll with near-identical spacing, sometimes I'll roll once and completely evade a BSS R1 attack; sometimes I'll roll twice, be halfway across the kiln's entrance platform from them and still get hit by some phantom Balder Side Sword slash that is occurring 10m away and facing the wrong direction.

Additional things to note, Running R1s (katana/rapier), Uchi/Washing pole slashes and Claymore/MLGS 2hR1s seem to proc this lag hit effect with great efficiency (especially the second hit of the claymore 2hR1; rolling away once with DWGR will still cause a hit register on you, rolling twice is a necessary precaution to prevent getting hit at all).

I've noticed that the connection sometimes starts out fine, then gets progressively worse to the point that they start teleport-rolling all over the place.

So, how does one deal with all of these things? I'm trying to get good at PvP, but I dread encountering Europeans (several of them also expressed a similar sentiment to me- apparently my miracles kept lagshotting them).

What can I do to avoid frustrating people? What can I do to avoid being frustrated by people?

    ---------

Also, I'd just like to ask how early is it necessary to attack to get a hit off first in a trade? In all my time playing PvP in this game, even if my attacking animation starts slightly earlier than my foe's and it's an identical weapon with identical swing (clay vs clay 2hr1 for example) I always get damaged first.

Sorry I cannot address your main questions.

You didn´t say Finns when you talked about europeans  silly

There isn´t really anything you can do, maybe try to not summon them?
Or play with friends, people you know that don´t lag.

I am sorry to say this, but there is nothing you can do about invading or being invaded by someone with bad connection. It may be annoying but the only way to deal with it is by trying to win or just taking the loss to stop the lag.

If you want to get better at pvp try joining a fight club or ask someone if they want to practice with you. I use to be horrible at pvp and I am still not that good at it, but the more a practice and learn new techniques the better i get.

I play on off hours, 1-6am EST. That means I usually fight Japanese players; actually 9 out of 10 fights I'm against Japanese players. The lag is just something you get used to. I used to get really frustrated but eventually, if you throw your head at it enough, you'll learn how to fight with the delay. That's how I learned to do better in laggy matches anyways. Persistence.

I still hate how much I get backstabbed against them though... getting pulled ten meters backwards into a lagstab is sooo frustrating.

PvP is really like a sport. Any sport you need practice and learning via trial an error. Expect to loose and learn from your defeats. See when you swing at the wrong time, take the wrong step, forget to watch stamina etc etc.... Fighting laggers in duels 4125110524

I think I've only seen one or two Finns... (and frustrated them as much as they frustrated me, one gave up altogether and jumped off a ledge because my attacks kept lag procing on him) the thing is, don't all the big duelling names (Peeves, EWGF, etc) also deal with these kinds of lag issues on a regular basis?

If they can maintain a high win to loss ratio, then they must have a reliable way of dealing with laggers...

Yeah, but the lag doesn't always get worse towards the end, and sometimes it does erratically. Also, it starts out horribly at the beginning sometimes. There's just so much randomness to deal with.

I heard once that you can judge latency by blocking and hearing the 'ping' of when your foe's weapon rebounds off of your shield, I tried it but never really understood how to use that trick.

Who? lol! Anyway, (keep to topic DxV) those guys PvP alllllll the time that is what makes them good. I do not think they sat down on the couch and figured out how to fight lag. They did it via experience.

No magic pill here. good luck.

Are you PS3? If so then what´s your PSN?

I fight americans a lot. And they rarely lag, at least not in my direction.

I have both PS3 and Xbox and I hardly have laggy invaders. If we may ask what is your download upload speed?

Judging the amount of lag is really important. Only advice is practice

Well, I've tried rolling in all directions from a lagging clay/katana 2hR1, lagboosted Iaito running R1 (and others) and the results are inconclusive at best.

It's usually much safer to roll twice away from the lagging clay/katana R1, but it's very stamina-intensive. It's also safer to roll to the side, rather than backwards.

Also, as far as I can see, there are no distinguishing characteristics that you can use to determine whether or not the hit will lag proc after you roll away. It's all a very annoying dilemma.

Sometimes, rolling a little earlier from my usual timing gets me lag proced. Sometimes a little later does too. Sometimes it doesn't.

    Frustrating as hell.

Are you PS3? If so then what´s your PSN?

Nope, not PS3, and you misunderstand me. It's the Europeans who lag. Americans are perfectly fine. They literally can't lagstab or lag hit at all even if they want to, lol.

    16 mbps.

I meant that americans don´t lag for me. I assumed that you live in america since europeans lag for you but americans don´t.

No easy way around it unless you want to pay more for more speed. I run at 30 mbps. I am hardwired also. With that said, I got back to my first piece of advice which was echoed by others. Practice. Sorry that is as concrete an answer as I can give.

Nope, that's incorrect. I live in Malaysia.
