Relating Halberds With Their Origin Empty Relating Halberds With Their Origin

Post by Dark Spirit EliteBiker20 Sun Aug 05, 2012 2:10 am

I am not one to usually post stuff in this section, but I might have found something interesting, (in my opinion).

I recently found out that Halberds were created by the Swiss back in the 1200's and were used by foot soldiers. In today's world, they are the choice weapon for the Vatican Swiss Guards, who I would imagine guard important things.

The 1200's were basically the middle of the midieval time period, which was full of castles and knights in armor, etc.

I am relating this information to the Giant Guards in Anor Londo. Based on the design of this area, it looks like it was based off of midieval times. The Giants, like the Vatican Guards, carry halberds, and im guessing guard the Princess, and the castle as a whole.

Did FROM actually do their research and base this area off of midieval history? Also, did FROM adopt the movesets of the halberds from movesets used by foot soldiers back in midieval times?

This is just something to think about, but I find it very interesting. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Well, Anor Londo takes a lot of it's design from cathedrals. I know because of the bloody pilgrimages I've been dragged along, as the building that Gwynevere is in bears ALOT of similarities to one in france.

Good point, but other than the castle, I want thoughts about the Halberd's origin, based on its use in the game, based on my information.

well, the gargoyles also use them. And of course the black knights, but they were more for hunting chaos demons than defending anything I think.

I can't say for certain, but I get the distinct impression based on the weapons design that its like spear+quarterstaff in actual combat.

Halberds, as well as spears, were some of the most versatile hand-held medieval weapons invented. That's why they were so widespread. Unless we were talking about something REALLY specific, I don't think we can actually say From went with Halberds for them because of some hidden meaning.

And of course the game is based on Medieval Europe with some assorted, non-European weapons thrown in. Dark and dirty was the look From was intending to create.

Its actually a shame halberds aren't used closer to how they were irl (looked it up, apparently I wasn't far off), but the combat system has limits.

Yeah, it would actually be a bit unfair to other weapons in game because of their uses. Essentially, in a game full of people in heavy armor, Halberd Users would be king. They are knight killers, a little nick name for the weapon. You can hammer with it, use wide swings, thrust with the spike. Use it to hook weapons, sweep legs, you could even use it defensively like a knife, pulling the weapon closer to you pointing the head away from your belly causing those to close to impale themselves on your weapon. Excellent against cavalry, though lightly armored faster moving people with shorter weapons could get in close and keep the weapon away leaving the halberd user open. I love Halberds.
