Looking for build advice Empty Looking for build advice

Post by Dogwelder Thu Jul 26, 2012 4:20 am

Okay, so I'm about to begin my second playthrough of DKS and I'd like some advice. In my first playthrough I was a knight and pretty much just went for the tank approach, focusing on VIT and END and sticking with a sword and shield for most of the game.

On this second playthrough, though, I want to move in a slightly more STR /DEX-based direction and explore some different weapons and equipment. I'd also like to try my hand at either spells or miracles, having focused on pyromancy over these two during my first playthrough. Ideally, I'd like to aim for a build that is capable in both PVE and PVP, as I intend to do some PVP fighting during my playthrough.

I'm currently reading up on forum posts concerning builds and other things but at the same time I thought I'd see if I could get some opinions here. Any advice on potential classes, stats, weapons, equipment, spells, miracles, etc. you think I should aim for would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

What do you want? Quality build? Pure Dex? Pure Str? Hybrid?

Hey WyrmHero, you gave me some really helpful information when I was preparing for my second DS playthrough a couple of months ago, so your advice is appreciated.

As for my build, I don't want to be an unfocused Jack-of-all-trades but at the same time, I'd like to keep my options fairly open in terms of what weapons and equipment I can use, so both a decent STR and DEX level would be good. I'll be mostly using melee in combat, although I'm not keen on a sword-and-shield set-up, since that was what I used for most of my first playthrough. I tried double Uchigatanas on my second DS playthrough and that was fun. I'm open to any advice when it comes to suggested weapons, though, not just swords.

At the same time, as I said, I'm going to focus on either spells or miracles, so I'd like to know more about what people recommend for these. I'm not going the pyromancy route as I did that on my first playthrough.

    1) Wanderer or a Pyro (yes you start with flame etc but you have decent stats as well)

increase attunement for one extra slot from the get go
you know where to get all the extra's when you start up, do that!
get intellegence up to 12 for Great Soul Arrow/Soul arrow
kill the merchant in berg for Uchigatan, but I feel you used that in your first playthrough though, like me ;P
get grass crest shield/dragoncrest early on and upgrade GCS +1-+15 normal route
do a quick run to get Crimson Armour and Banishment catylst Blightown which you can use for sorceries

    I would go something like:

    1) Dexerity
    2) Vitality
    3) Intellegence
    4) Stamina
    5) Strength

I am doing the same as you now, I am quite evenly spread out for stats at the moment, 16 str/14 dex/19 attunemnent/13 vit or more/15 endurance and 8 faith etc..

If you want to use a weapon and spells in right hand then shield and talisman left then I would suggest upgrading faith as well :0

I am now using weapon/pyro right hand and shield/catylyst left hand for this playthrough, good luck!

Create a good magic weapon that scales with Intellgence this time if you are going to be using mainly spells! I would not use scaling weapons to the normal path either as you wont need more than 18/14 or so in Dex and Str for now, however DEX does increase casting times so a weapon like the Uchigatana would be a good idea as it scales B with Dex and then you can ascend it to fire/lightning later on! Flamberge is a good weapon too, lightning+3 does like 490 damage and keeps it 300 bleed effect...

hope this helped a little, feels like I am rambling on and not making sense lol, sorry if that is the case

You could try a spell-sword. Dual-wield a catalyst in your off-hand and a melee weapon in your main-hand.

Get yourself 16 Str and 16 Dex, then eventually get Int to 45. The Str is so you can wield the Moonlight Greatsword, and the Dex is so you can wield Velka's Rapier. Along with the Moonlight Butterfly Horn, which you could craft from the Moonlight Butterfly's Soul, those are the strongest (unbuffable) weapons Mages can use. You could also use regular weapons (upgrade them to +14 or +15) and use Great Magic Weapon (while your Int is low) and Crystal Magic Weapon on them.

A spell-sword, in my opinion, should wear medium-light armor, and no shield. You won't need much End, but do get your Vit high. Get good at dodging, and taking advantage of your spells and your melee weapons.

No, you're not rambling, I appreciate the advice. Actually, I was thinking of choosing the Wanderer as my class, so I still might go for that.

It's tempting to kill the merchant for his Uchigatana but I'll probably let him live (at least for a while) in case I need to buy anything from him later. I'll keep your Flamberge suggestion in mind.

A spell-sword sounds good - as I said in my original post, although I'll be using mainly melee for combat, I would like to explore either spells or miracles at the same time, so a combination of melee and spells might suit me well. I'm not sure about using a Greatsword, though, as I wasn't really planning on using any of the bigger weapons. I'll look into it.

Anyone have any preferences when it comes to spells and miracles? Do players generally find one more useful than the other? I know spells generally have more offensive capabilities but I know miracles obviously have their own advantages too, and I'd like to know what people think of this.

Probably the most user friendly PvP build is the katana/pyro. It's so easy to use it's ridiculous (and super common). Probably the easiest build to do well with in my opinion. My other favorite is the "quality" build, or 40str/40dex build. Pretty much all the weapons are available to you and there are some awesome dual wield combos. I prefer a str weapon in my right hand and dex in the left that can also parry.

Damage - to be fair Kats have no learning curve however make it even better by suggesting to him a buff also Kappa Will make it just too easy for him, On my pyro I run an estoc +15 and Chaos Rapier (Chip Damage and Ripostes).

    Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I'll probably try duel-wielding of some form, I'd rather not use a shield much this time around, if at all.

When it comes to weapon upgrade paths, from what I've been reading on the forums it seems like lightning is the obvious choice, which kind of puts me off going for it. I'd be interested to know people's thoughts on other upgrade paths such as enchanted, occult, chaos, etc., to see if I can get a clearer idea of what type of path I'd like to aim for.

I've been using an Iaito and an Estoc on my pyro. They've both got really good lunging horizontal sweep R2's that are perfect to throw in after FB cancels for dead angles.
