How do I use Excel Solver to Min/Max gear?

Post by IV_Mark_VI on Mon Jul 30, 2012 6:12 pm

First post, apologies if this is somewhere else on the forum, I searched for "Excel" and "Solver" with no returns.

Simply, can someone send me an example of how to use Excel Solver to min/max equipment? I'm looking for the best protection with a given restriction of weight and poise. In the past when I've used excel solver, there was a variable to modify that affected the outcome; usually a quantity of something. But in this example is no quantity, just discrete packages. It seems to truly min/max you would need to have all the possible combinations worked out, and then find what is the best protection based on Weight/Poise restrictions. There is no "Linear" approach.

However, I have seen threads elsewhere that people have done this, so I'm very curious as to how.

    Thanks in advance!

Maybe someone could answer your question if they knew what you're talking about. I personally have no idea.

Solver is an add-in for excel to solve linear or integer problems. You should be able to use it for this problem; you should be able to program it to say "Give me the best magical protection gear that is under 40 units of weight" or the same thing but with the added restriction it must have 56 points of poise. I just don't know how to do it big grin

    Thank you very much!

Edit: Not exactly what I was looking for, but still helpful. This utility doesn't take Poise into account which, in my opinion, is very important. You want enough to take a hit from certain weapons without being stunlocked, and then you want the best protection said poise has to offer.

It does, you just have to set poise as one of the options.

It has an option to maximize for Poise, this is true. Not exactly the same thing, but close enough! Thank you very much.
