Yeah, for the most part they can't take a decent hit though. So just punch them in the nose and you'll be fine.

Re: Mage's must DIE!
If anything, in many games magic us under powered. Why spend money to manage the extra resource when melee hits just as hard anyways? Especially with the decrease in defense.

Cough cough PvE and D7D 3.0/3.5 lol. Also Sacred 1 and possibly 2, havent done enough testing for the second. In what games is it underpowered?

Re: Mage's must DIE!
Lots. Skyrim is an easy example, everything else does more damage faster. The more recent final fantasy games as well, skies of arcadia, star oceans 2, 3 and 4, Everything except force storm and force crush in kotor, even the legend of dragoon. The only magic worth the defense loss is healing, the rest is just high maintenance melee.DoughGuy wrote:Cough cough PvE and D7D 3.0/3.5 lol. I'm poor so my examples are older, but I've seen it in more recent games as well, I just don't own them so can't remember the names.

Re: Mage's must DIE!
Me? I'm no templar. I don't really like most of the magic in dks, but the magic in dragon age origins is awesome.
Given a choice, I like to suppliment physical abilities with magic, think tifa or the lion guy from FFX.

Re: Mage's must DIE!
What's wrong with mages? Honestly they've always been my favorite archetype of character (followed shortly by engineers). Anybody can swing a sword (admittedly some better than others ) but it's much more impressive to me to be able to, say, have an animated puppet fight for you, shapeshift into an animal, create localized black holes, or turn invisible. Sure you can beat down whatever enemies you may face with a hammer, but where's the style in that?

Yes but inevitably they always go bad and end up corrupted by thier own power. They are simply too dangerous to allow free and unrestricted.

Re: Mage's must DIE!
I only use mage abilitys in dark souls when im farming dragon scales with my 626 toon from the drakes on the bridge since the drakes there are more easily damages by soul spears than they are by lighting spears.
Edit: Im on NG+++ so those punks on the bridge I would rather not fight in close range if possible.
I feel in dragons dogma their is good balance with magic vs the physical.

To say all magic users are or will become evil is simply incorrect. Gandalf, Yuna, Princess Zelda, Yuria, Brentilda, and The High Council of Equity that oversees the League of Legends are all examples of mages who use their powers for benevolent means. While it's true that a mage can fall prey to evil intentions, this is also true for warriors or practitioners of faith. If you are to look at mages as evil, then you must also look at the Blood Knights, Devils, moralless mercenaries, and Cult Leaders that are out there who use their battle prowess or faith for corrupt means. Just like how there is a Paladin for every Dark Knight, for every witch or warlock there is a mage

Re: Mage's must DIE!
To say a mage is inherently evil is nott wrong. The chantry teaches us the Mage draw their power from beyond the Viel where demons live. When the first Tevinter Magisters tried to enter the golden city the inevitably corrupted it, and were corrupted themselves by thier powers. Mages walk too close to the line of insanity. Their powers make them more powerful than anay man, woman, or child and that they could choose to at any momment use their power for selfish/evil means is enough for me to say that they must be controlled.

It has to be done. Any person who doesnt earn thier powers is not truely powerful at all. Mages are born with thier skills. Warriors earn them in the field!

Power itself is not evil, it is the weilder who has the choice of how to use said power. Mages draw their power from many sources. Some draw them from other realms, some from inner strength, and some from nature to name a few. While some have questionable sources of power, evil is not inherent to the power itself but to the individual. You argue that they teeter on the edge of insanity, and that this reason is why they must be controlled, but is a Warlord who draws his power from his battle prowess or an Occultist who draws power from an all-powerful deity not just as likely to consumed by their own power and turn to evil?
A warlord can use his battle prowess to slaughter innocent civilians to claim territory, when negotiations may have been just as effective. A priest has the power summon demons, but they can also teach mankind the greatest goods of human nature. And while some mages can use their powers to summon the dead or make themselves immortal, others use their power to mend wounds or communicate with nature. Evil should be controlled, not power.

Mages have to earn their power just like everyone else. Knowledge of the arcane and how to control it isn't innate.
