Is there a point to using light armor?

Post by Atnas on Mon Jul 23, 2012 8:39 pm

Hey! I'm new to Dark Souls, but loving how unique it is. I'm about level 55-60ish and I decided that my character was going to be a dex/faith kind of guy, with 30 in faith to get some neat miracles like Darkmoon Blade (I'm also searching for Trancquil Walk and Wrath of Gods, but I do hate the catacombs!).

Anyway, I was hunting down guilty players and the majority of them have heavy armor. It's not a big deal, they are trading mobility for defenses, and there's a lot of cool looking heavy armor out there anyway (Dark Souls seems very geared to a Knight type of character!).

When all of a sudden a guy I'm battling in heavy armor starts doing these crazy backflips! I'm very, very surprised because he shouldn't be able to do- he ought to be more like a potato when it comes to dodging! In fact, he's capable of dodging quicker than I am. Once the battle is over and I'm dead, I send him a message and he tells me it's because of a special ring you get from the tree covenant cat thingie. Well, that sucks for me because I answered a question wrong when talking to the cat and I can't join it to ultimately betray it in order to get the ring.

So! Here I am, with my character focused in being light and agile in order to outmanoeuvre heavier characters. Turns out it doesn't matter because by equipping a single ring the heavy armor character actually becomes more mobile than me, which leads me to wonder...

Is there any flipping point in wearing light armor at all?

Can I even fight in PvP at higher levels with this character? Have I gimped myself early on?

its al labout the res in light armor, you can have high res in everything and have havels gauntlets and greaves and still have enough poise to take a 2h gs hit which most people do. u usually go light armor with the wolf ring and i do pretty good with it.

Light armor has superb elemental defenses and with it you can save the ring slot which would go to the DWGR and can go to something else (the problem is that that same ring slot usually has to be devoted to the Wolf Ring, but c'est la vie...) making you more versatile. Not to mention, I just prefer the look of most light armor sets.

But, on the whole, yes, heavy armor is stronger and, yes, the DWGR is an insanely powerful piece of equipment.

this uses two pieces of really light armor with two pieces of havels (for poise) with fast roll, it also has every stamina boosting item in the game equiped, with a fast and powerful weapon, light armor ftw.

Light armor is very useful for low endurance builds. These types of builds are usually mages or glass cannons. This is because spells don't require stamina, and light armor doesn't have stamina penalty so with an endurance of 9 is enough to dodge and cast freely. Green blossom also helps.

You cant get the same coolness factor from heavy armour that you can light armour.
But pratically speaking no, the DWGR removes any disadvantage that wearing heavy armour should bring.

The Dark Wood Grain Ring let's a character with 40 endurance equip 40 pounds of weight.
Havels Ring would allow that same character to equip 30.
Havels Ring + Ring of Favor and Protection would allow that character to equip 36.
Havels Ring + Ring of Favor an Protection + Mask of the Father would allow a character to equip 41.5 pounds of equipment.

In conclusion, that ring does the same thing as 3 pieces of equipment combined, can be stacked with said equipment, and on top of all of this, give the player access to a special roll that is faster then your current roll. It is one of the biggest eyesores on the PvP scene in this game.

If I have a build that uses two rings, and I don't have room for the DWGR, I usually sacrifice armor for fast roll. But light armor is very poorly balanced in this game, I agree.
