    Lord of the Rings

Post by Quarik on Sun Jul 22, 2012 11:44 pm

I couldn't find a dedicated thread for Lord of the Rings discussion, and this grievous error must be remedied.

    Any fans around the forums?

They be pretty cool. I've been rewatching the movies (just finished Fellowship extended), and I noticed that all of the Nazgul became Ringwraiths under the same circumstances, but the Witch King is the only one not bound to Sauron. Sup with that?

I had a rent in another thread about the stories and concluded tom was kind of a useless peeve of deus ex machina that didn't add much to the story but pages. Mine was not a popular opinion. Also, been awhile since I read the books but always felt the witch king was the most powerful and retained some of his identity as well as providing intelligent oversight to the others

I love the Lord of the Rings. Tolkien made a huge contribution to the genre that can not be disregarded.

I hate the purple prose the books use though.

The Scouring of the Shire feels anti-climatic, though. I know it represents the big shock Tolkien had when he came back from to war to his now-industrialized hometown, but holy cow doesn't that make the book weirdly-paced.

Tom was effectively melded into Fangorn, and the Barrow Downs had no real relevance to the rest of the story. I did like the bit in the Shire though. I can't really explain why, I just liked it when the Hobbits actually did something important.

Also, favorite member of the Fellowship?

    Why Aragorn?

Incidentally, I just looked up the translation for Gimli's curse to Haldir. Apparently it means "I spit upon your grave." So... slightly less imaginative than I'd hoped.

I did like the Scouring. I just didn't like the way it was inserted into the book. Destroys the climax. silly

Aragorn! Closely followed by Sam. The first guy is a honest, hardworking Man.

    And Sam won the war.

You are a stronger man than I. Then again, I haven't tried. I did watch all of the Extended Editions in a single sitting though.

My favorite member of the Fellowship is Gandalf. There could be no other. Recently I have been finding that I like Boromir quite a bit too, though.

Oh god the nazgul, I did kind of squeal when I first saw them in the Fellowship of the Ring.

I have to say I'm a much bigger fan of Sam over most in the series though, I just love how loyal he is to Frodo through-out all he had to deal with. I think Legolas comes as a second for me though.

So... apparently Aragorn and Sam get a lot more love than I'd expected.

Someone think of a new topic!

    Who did you expect?

New topic: Am I the only one found the elves (excluding Legolas when he's with the other dudes of the Fellowship) to be excruciatingly boring?

    - What I mean is, elf-on-elf interaction. Those were terrible.

I never really noticed. I was too busy noticing how friggin' awesome Haldir's armor is at the Battle of the Hornburg.
