All because of that tiny thing... Empty All because of that tiny thing...

Post by Darkson Wed Jul 11, 2012 7:58 pm

So I get home from a long working (and working out) day. I look forward to record some pvp fights. I get into the living room and am about to prepare eveything for the glorious upcoming fight night.

We have a tiny grey dwarf hamster. His cage stands in the living room. I'm telling you that because he is actually the one who my next 2 hours were all about. Yes, that bastard little furry orb... I have to take care about him, because (unlike me) my mom and my little sister went on a holiday trip for the whole week.

So I hear the usual rattling of the cage bars, he usually likes to climb them all day, all the way up and upside down on the ceiling and whatnot.

The cage is pretty high. The sites consist of vertical bars, with a single bar running horizontally in the middle. I'm telling you that because.. ah just read on.

So as I look at the cage, I see drama. He appears to be hung up/caught midway up on one side. With his rear legs. The rest of his body is hanging down in the air and he's making hectic movements, struggling, apparently trying to free himself. I'm like wtf, jump up and as I look closely it appears that his left rear legs are - hope that this describes it right somehow - tangled up on/inbetween (?) the bars. As I look even more closely I see that it's actually only his left rear leg. And it looks horrible. It's completely deformed/broken and like wrapped around the vertical bars, it's going outside the cage and inside again on the next gap and his foot hangs out again on the gap next to that gap (how the...?) and the only thing that keeps him from sliding down is that one horizontal bar... I'm panicking and start cursing and whatnot. I have no idea how long he has been hanging there like that. Last time I checked him was in the morning of course, at 8:15 I went off and came back at about 19:30, so theoretically he could be hanging there for like the whole day already...? "oh god"

So I try to hold him and free his leg, but of course he totally panics, screams really oddly and fights and tries to bite me and such, I'm so scared to make it all just worse... So I decide to get every loose object out of the cage and tilt it so that the one side becomes the floor. I do it slowly and after like a second after I fully tilted it he even frees himself.
I tilt it back to normal and first thing he does is running, yes running, immediatly to his water bottle. I am disturbed by how his leg looks, it it completely deformed, but it seems kind of stiff. He's was just like holding it up a bit while he was running at his regular speed, on 3 legs... It seems like he doesn't even care, he wasn't even examining it...
He drinks for a while and then looks at me. When our hamster looks at you, he got that certain look. (lol yeah) What I mean is that it does not seems like he's always randomly looking around for something, like it was with our old hamster. That one was always just moving hectically, minding his own business, not even once he stared at me like our current one does it everytime. He usually stares directly at your face, and when you move around his head follows you. It's quite creepy but very interesting.

Anyway, then that weird furry orb starts running around on 3 legs, again, with regular speed, examining his cage which now looks different with most of the objects and bedding material out on the living room floor. Then that idiot starts climbing the f*cking bars again !?!?! As I'm constantly keeping him down I phone my dad and ask him for help, because I'm that scared and I don't really know what to do about it, I don't want to let him suffer of course. Although it didn't even look like it was a big deal to him.

After a short time my dad comes over with his girlfriend (they just finished eating in a restaurant). After we looked up a nearby animal clinic on the internet my dad phones them and the woman tells us to bring our hamster over. (funny that "bring sth/sb over" freely translated to german means to kill sth/sb, that's of course not what I meant) So together we are drive there, keeping the hamster in an open shoe carton with some bedding and his tiny plastic hamster house inside where he's now hiding in, thinking that it's possible that he will just be put to sleep. Which my little sister won't be happy about really when she comes back...

But as we get there the female doctor is like "nah, we gonna keep him stationary here and tomorrow we will x-ray him and then look what we can do, maybe put some nails in".

Me, my dad and his girlfriend are suddenly realizing how hilarious that whole situation is, it's all just because of that tiny animal. But of course we agree to leave him there and look how it goes. Maybe they will even put nails in the leg, I can't help but find that hilarious. They said they also did that once on a gerbil and it worked out fine. That's pretty awesome. If not they will just amputate it maybe. Which he seemingly really would have no problem with. Just as we spoke about everything in the consulting room we was hyperactive, running around in his shoe carton.

So saying good bye we all stand around the carton, and the hamster is now sitting there, chilling. He's literally sitting on his butt, literally being a perfect orb, with his normal and his deformed leg stretched out front and arms on his belly, staring up at us like "yo what's the deal?" Lol, I'm pretty sure he's gonna be fine after all.

But now I'm really asking myself why I care so much about that hamster, I never even had anything to do with him until now.

Anyway, thanks for reading though, I was in the mood to share it. Please excuse grammatical errors or whatever kinf of other flaws, obviously it's also some kind of exercise for me. Never thought I'd write so much. It's 1 in the morning.........

    Because I have to work?

Well, and that would have been really tragic, coming back seeing the rotting hamster hanging on the bars... my sister would probably have been the first who ran there to greet him... oh well.

 Oh god.... really a good thing I was home.

I would like to now if that's a common thing to happen, a hamster breaking his leg that bad climbing the cage bars? Probably not.

First off, I take my hat off to you Darkson just for caring. You shouldn't have to ask yourself why you care, it's enough that you do, you should be proud.

A +1 for being a decent human being.

That not as bad as my bull mastiff trying to comitt suicide.

we strap a chain to his collor when ever he is in back of the truck with just enough length for his head to reach the sides and out of the tons of times he has ridden in back this one time he decide's its to cruel a world and through his lower half off the truck luckily I was pumping gas and the standing next to him if not x_x would have been the case.

Side note he rode in the front of the truck on the way home that day.

A little update if you're interested: We got the hamster from the clinic the day after. It's unbelievable but they said nothing is broken. It's weird, we all saw how deformed his leg was, but now it seems to be just alright. Maybe it looked weird to us because he was dragging it after him and had it angled in a weird way... idk. But yeah, everything seems to be just fine now. We didn't put him back in that small but rather high cage, instead we bought a (rather expensive) terrarium. It's big and awesome, and he seems so happy. First we put him in there he was very catious and scared but after a few minutes he got so hyperactive, we never had seen him like that before. Digging and climbing everything and running and running and running around... so cute....

Thanks Slake, guess no one would have been able to ignore it, it looked really awful. Wish I could show a pic now. But taking a pic of him in that situation would be weird I guess.....

Bane, I don't really understand, what was your bull (!?) trying to do exactly? And why must he ride with you in the truck?

I take him for walks along a lake. Bull mastif (Big dog) becasue although he is a huge do he isnt not the size of a horse and so he wouldnt be able to keep up with a truck.
