Lost In Endless Night
Not sure if it's entirely just me..But the entire New Londo area freaks me out immensely, Everything about it just hinges me on the edge of my seat. Can't with entire honesty understand why though Maybe it's the fact i get jumped every 2 seconds by Darkwraiths, Or the sudden onset panic when a spiraling staircase ends in utter darkness..I'm a great fan of horror games, regardless of genre..But I have never had to just relax a moment before because my hands are shaking from an over in-take of adrenaline lol The 4k fight though was possibly the easiest i have encountered so far...A touch disappointing. I didn't post this to just tell you of my supreme horror of fathomless voids, Was actually more of a curiosity, If any place in the game makes you feel odd? If there are places, People or objects that just make your skin crawl. Or show compassion when usually you'd go into beserker mode and hack and slash your way through the universe.

Re: Lost In Endless Night
I think New Londo needs to be way bigger. It definitely has potential to be creepy, but for that it should be more disorienting, give you the feeling that you're lost, and trapped. As it is, Upper New Londo is just a slightly windy path in and out of buildings, and Lower New Londo is more or less a circular area. It's so small that once you've been through it once, you easily know the whole layout, and it's hard to feel threatened in an area that's so familiar.
See the Tower of Latria in Demon's Souls. It's a fairly simple layout, but you get spun around so much on stairs that you get disoriented and start to feel trapped and claustrophobic. There's a reason why everyone uses that level as an example when talking about atmosphere in game levels! New Londo has the potential to be as good, but it needs to be bigger (also have more memorable enemies in the upper section--the ghosts are creepy and all, but they're kind of lame and more annoying than scary...).

Re: Lost In Endless Night
Wait till you hit NG+. They wont disappoint you again. Haha. Initially I felt he same way about New Londo and Tomb of the Giants. The first time I played through I did it without the maggot or lantern like an idiot. I'm hoping the DLC brings that feeling back. The first time I played through was an experience I had never gotten from any other game before it.

Re: Lost In Endless Night
I think after beating the game multiple times, every area could be bigger. Right now speed runs are easy because you can just pass all the mobs and hit the bosses. I really liked those New Places in the DLC but I think they could expand the original! Ideas:
1- Blocked door after beating Iron Golem, that mountain between Sens and Anor Londo looks like the LoTR Mines of Moria !
2- Another blocked door in Centipede room, open that and put a dark place full of lava and new monsters!
3- Lower, even lower New Londo, that city like place
4- Lower Anor Londo, another city
5- Make Ash Lake bigger and more enemies...
Maybe its dreaming too much, but there so many places that could be so interesting to explore

Re: Lost In Endless Night
When I first played the game the Depths really freaked me out. Torch Hollows, rats in boxes, and these guys . I hated it. After grabbing the Large Ember I didn't go back to explore it again until after Seath, and, by then, I was so strong I had my way with the Depths.
But my first time there really scared me. Please don't think me a coward.

Coward? Lol no way! In the first playthrough there is always a place that you dislike. Lost izalith being mine. I hated so much that place! Lava everywhere, scary giant legs and those frightening octo demons! Even today I have a hard time fighting them

Re: Lost In Endless Night
I think Ashlake would be pretty bad *** if it was a larger open area, Definitely..Something about deep untraversable water freaks me out too..Lol And seeing that hydra floating around really gave you a feeling of being an ant in a world of giants..But like i said. Something honestly creepy about Londo..Yeah it would be awesome as a larger more profound area, That would add an incredible feeling of nausea to the dark, musty lost city. And i have to agree that a larger convoy of enemies would spruce it up even further, After a while Darkwraiths dont seem all that sudden and challenging as it was when you first got one jumping at you. I still have to admit that out of all of the areas in the game, Ariamis has to be my favorite by far, Love the snow, and cold feel that it seems to eminate with such vigor and i felt a genuine sadness for Priscilla and her plight to keep her world safe. Beautiful game. I wish i could stop playing it, lol It's seriously eating my soul with it's amazingly immense world and face meltingly difficult boss challenges surrounded by puzzles and traps..I'm starting to think i'll never find an RPG that even barely compares...
Keep posting guys, Love hearing this ideas on areas and stuff, Draws me further into this world i love so much.

Re: Lost In Endless Night
Did you guys ever look around in Lower New Londo?
Bodies everywhere. After noticing that, I nearly flip out every time I remember. Gosh, it makes me feel like.. I need to stop, turn off my console, and take refuge. Just the thought of so much death. Gosh. And my favorite movie is Braveheart!
Anyway, the whispering in the Archives also flips me out in a similar way.
Don't blame me for being so extremely flipped out. I saw a demon in my room after I saw Paranormal Activity.
No joke. :|

That's why I love New Londo OP. Man, the first time I drained the water and walked down onto those piles of twisted, drowned bodies... It really gives the impression of the suffering and mass slaughter that created the drowned, haunted city.

Re: Lost In Endless Night
Much like Pendant, the area that creeped me out teh first time was the Depths. I was walking along, slowly, and then suddenly I fall through the floor down some shaft, take massive fall damage (relative to my HP) and have these freaky giant-eyed lizards leaping at me and hissing. Then I get cursed, die instantly and come back with half-HP!
The Depths really did it for me, fear wise. The Great Hollow was up there though, because I have a massive fear of heights.

Re: Lost In Endless Night
Nothing in dks scared me. Demons was better about it imo, possibly because I was inexperienced back then. And the most nerve wracking thing in my gaming history is being invaded in Latria. If it wasn't dangerous or confusing enough, with chimes of mages that will 2shot me and the haunting singing making me nervous and jumpy, now theres an invader.

^That damn mistress's singing! And Rydell who won't stop screaming...
@Reflecting
Yeah, the Painted World is one of my favorite areas--it's a gem!
Now I remember the first time I went down in Lower New Londo. Don't know if their aggro range was reduced, but I remember if you stepped too loudly you'd just pull all the damn Darkwraiths in the level to you at the same time! They just loved to swarm. And the huge pile of bodies by the giant gate did move me back then... I just got desensitized from playing too much--after a while, the pile of bodies is just another pile, might as well be rocks.

Yeah, bodies in games don't seem to bother me all that much anymore..Things that still bother me though for reasons beyond explanation, always creep me out though..Glad someone else agrees that Ariamis is awesome XD

Oh dear. The New Londo ruins make me feel weird too; but the entire game does that to be fair. The lack of a "Nexus" safe spot creates that feeling; even when you are resting in Firelink, you know those Hollows on the hill are watching down...

Thought it was just me thinking about always being watched by those undead! I know they aren't REALLY watching..But i can feel their eyes burning me...Ive actually gone up there intentionally, just to stop them from watching me..very eery feeling indeed. And yeah, I get that feeling far too often in the game lol Fascinating really, Takes a special atmosphere to create horror, without actually doing anything. Hearing wind rustling, Or foot steps of patrolling mobs...Magic..haha

Re: Lost In Endless Night
Am I the only one who was awed by the Kiln of the First Flame? It wasn't creepy at all, it just was...desolate. And lore wise, it always seemed to me that it was a city of the gods, like ALondo, but it was charred.
In summary, the Kiln will probably always be my favorite place in all of DkS, for PvP and PvE.

Re: Lost In Endless Night
I think that in your first playthrough all the areas creep you out somehow. And it is because of the atmosphere they were able to create.
The actually managed to make you feel alone and helpless.
Even nowadays that I have finished the game several times some enemies make me jump when I didn't see them and suddenly get hit by them, I'm like: "Ohh Sh*t!!! You scared the hell out of me!!!!!"
About places, New Londo did it, the Painted World did it too.
But the one that is my biggest nightmare it's called Blighttown (from the depths entrance).
It really annoys me, lately I have been avoiding that part completely because of that.

agreed, the bodies was very nice touch of art that really made the new londo area extra creepy. I always imagined them sitting at the bottom of the lake rotting away until you drained it. Then of course, your walking on them. ugh. Bravo for good art direction though, darksouls really has great little details added to make the world.

Re: Lost In Endless Night
The most paranoid I remember was the first time I saw andrei the blacksmith. I remember hearing his hammer booming in the distance and It getting louder as I got closer. I had just come from fighting the big knight in udead parish. I felt imminent despair at hearing that booming hammer getting louder and knowing he was going to attack me. As soon as I saw him with his big mean face I r2 jump attacked him and sent him into a fury. I had to run up the stairs and hide behind the bonfire and that was the only way I could hit him in close quarters without dying. The worst part, I killed him, realized later he was a valuable NPC and had to recreate a new char. That was the most scared I had been, LOL. I was probably like sL12 or something, first playthrough.

I disagree, I don't think Gwyndolin is the mastermind lying to the player, I think he had no part.
In my opinion Gwyndolin was keeping Anor Londo light out of respect of his father whom he loved dearly, and other than that just ran the darkmoons.
