Because some time in his life, after being a knight and hunting the dark wraiths, he became cursed himself.

    From the Purging stone:
Humans are helpless against curses, and can only redirect their influence.
The Purging Stone does not dispel curses, but receives them as a surrogate. The stone itself was once a person or some other being.

What most people think of his cursed blade is that he intentionally got cursed to fight them.

    From the Cursed GSoA:
"The sword can damage ghosts, as it was cursed when Artorias joined a covenant with the creatures of the Abyss."

Never is it stated that he intentionally hunted the ghosts, like how the divine says he hunted wraiths.

Beatrice doesn't need the ring. I don't know when or who came up with the idea, but the ring isn't needed to walk the abyss. You as the character need it until you make the covenant with Kaathe. Anyone try to drop down in the abyss in the DW covenant w/o the ring? Then drop down without the ring after killing the 4 kings?

He wasn't so much a failure as he was too vulgar/brutal. It says that he ground up the bones of his victims into his own feed, and that is what ruined his hopes of joining the four knights of Gwyn. Just an honor-type thing I'm guessing. I wouldn't want someone like him representing me either lol.

My only constant theory has been that Artorias made the covenant to continue his perceived quest. Gwyn changed and he didn't so therefore he did betray Gwyn, but not himself. With all the new teaser stuff though it really seems like they're hinting Artorias did go "evil." I haven't speculated much on his potential role as a knight though so it's hard for me to say if his ambitions changed or not.

Yeah, I've always felt that sif is artorias! I did find it interesting that sif uses the white version of the sword, moreso now that we have footage of artorias, albeit a dark form. Now, I hate to play devils advocate here, I've been reading through this thread and saw all the back and forth on the allegiances artorias may have. Could it be that artorias was cursed in his attempt to destroy the kings? He obviously failed in their destruction cause were forced to fight and destroy them! Maybe once he perished his soul took the form of his kindred animal, the wolf. What we may be seeing in the artorias story were about to play through is his final moments and we find that he was a perversion of what he was.

I also wonder why alvina seems to protect him, trying to keep his grave secret, so much so that she was willing to create a whole covenant that hunts those entering, maybe to find the grave! And the forest is sealed by the seal of artorias.

    More questions than answers. =/

For all we know we could be wrongly assassinating a wounded man, Skare. After all, what we saw is Artorias plunging down on an enemy. Either to intimidate, or to protect himself from you teaming up on him.

This is really interesting. Sif could indeed be Artorias in wolf form. Is there more proof to make this more believeable tough? I can't think of things that go against it..

Idk what it is either, but if I try to imagine it in my head, for some reason, it's the Legends of Zelda triforce symbol hahaha!

    That'd be awesome.
