Having uploaded like a billion youtube videos, there were a few times where a video would fail for an unknown reason. Because .avi is definitely a supported format, I might recommend deleting the failed upload and trying again. Re-upping anything that failed the first time usually worked the second time.
Most videos work almost instantly after processing for a moment (or a couple minutes depending how long it is), but sometimes certain videos will get stuck at random and take much longer (like a day).
Edit: Also, if you're somehow uploading directly from other software (I've never done that before), I would recommend using youtube to upload the video file directly from your computer instead. Just incase there's something weird with the editing software you're using.
