Since i'll be trying to avoid direct combat, I probably wont have time to GMW if it happens. Maybe an elemental spear would be better?

You always have time to roll away, and since you'll be in the catacombs, you can easily get a few enemies inbetween you and an opponent to buff. Ricards Rapier is beyond deadly when buffed.

I'd stop at 55, just from personal experience. And you'll invade into a fair amount of 2 and 3v1 fights, so keep something elemental equipped or in your menu that you can swap to quickly to deal with phantoms before messing with the host. I don't like the rapier for solo fights because (a) the fight's over immediately should you parry/BS, and (b) you can't kick with rapiers. I stopped using them altogether just because of that.

I'm dithering between a spear and a rapier... spear seems safer, rapier seems more powerful

You want to have fun down there, my man, not play it safe. My personal favorite is two darkhands and a hornet ring. Just some bare chested mug walkin' around with a couple of smokey hands. That's the most fun I've had down there. Completely pwning low level players is really, REALLY boring if you PvP a lot. Not to say that I'm the bomb or anything, but on a 55 twink build against new players, you're basically immortal.

my sl 55 hunter vader uses a partizan, its really good for those tight hallways.

yeah, im surpised how many new players are still out there, its nice to know that people are still getting dark souls, im going in with my hunter theme build, its been really fun but damn i feel bad whnever i invade a newbie, i alwasy drop humanity then kill him. the most fun is kicking people of bridges.

Yeah, I love it. I usually just try to give the new players the same thrill I got the first time I was invaded. Pop em with the Shotel, let 'em heal. Poison them and turtle in their face. Stand around while they get mobbed. All that good stuff.

loli followed a guy for the whole level just trolling him and actually tried to help him a little with the bridges, i knew he didnt know what the hell was going on because he would run away from me every time lol i felt bad after but i least i didnt kill him, i'd rather mess around with them than just go in there and ohko them with a bs like everyon else.

I like to ruthlessly destroy them once with a well timed kick of a ledge...then if I invade the same guy again I wave and run away and stay one step a head of them through the level till they make it to pinwheel...if they do ill wave and BC out as they get 2 me!
