    n.
    1. An extended narrative poem in elevated or dignified language, celebrating the feats of a legendary or traditional hero.
    2. A literary or dramatic composition that resembles an extended narrative poem celebrating heroic feats.
    3. A series of events considered appropriate to an epic: the epic of the Old West.
    adj.
    1. Of, constituting, having to do with, or suggestive of a literary epic: an epic poem.
    2. Surpassing the usual or ordinary, particularly in scope or size: "A vast musical panorama . . . it requires an epic musical understanding to do it justice" (Tim Page).
    3. Heroic and impressive in quality: "Here in the courtroom . . . there was more of that epic atmosphere, the extra amperage of a special moment" (Scott Turow).

I believe the most accurate of those in the context of my post just now was definition #2, where the "epic" music is primarily meant to convey an incredibly large-scale event.

EDIT: #2 of the adjective definitions

I disagree with the specific examples you gave, but I got the message. I'm actually going to give you this one though, you're more specific than I generally am, but I can't disagree after seeing your point.

Hah! didn't see that coming did you?! I win!.................only joking. I actually do agree.

i agree with the brony chief (something i never thought id say) Orchestral music in video games is good, dont get me wrong, but it is getting to be a tad generic:

    -Hueg string sections
-Timpanis rolling in the background for dramatic effect
-accented by the angelic chorus of a gregorian choir chanting fake latin

    did i miss anything?

EDIT: This is all assuming that by "EPIC" you're reffering to vidya OST's. if not ill take my leave

I dislike listening to most solem music. No matter how well it fits, being sad sucks and solem music induces said suck.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ-yoLFtsnU

imo really good, definitely fits the theme, really don't want to listen it 99.999999999% of the time.

My definition of "solemn" is a little more broad then I guess. I like to think of it less as music that's meant to make you sad, and more music that's meant to be calming or to downplay emotions as opposed to excite them. While sad music is certainly one way to bring a person down out of a high place, it's not all that solemn music is. Since my examples worked so well last time for you (winking), here's a few more to maybe convey the idea:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8t8iOzbL-mY (bravery and determination)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVKj3u8JUm0 (accomplishment)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTDCzDgKSMY (pure relaxation)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4s3m_B4AZiY&feature=relmfu (preparation/the calm before the storm)

Have to say, this is one of my favorites. Though relaxation isn't really the word I'd associate with it, to me, it's always felt like a cheerful foray into a fantastical kingdom my drug-induced brain would create for me.

    Don't do drugs, kids.

After my nooby self had been escorted past mobs 20 levels higher than me, with only the randomly timed stealth buffs of a linkshell buddy keeping me alive through 3 whole zones, I can say it was pretty darn relaxing to reach Jeuno for the first time lol!

    The Protomen.

Glorious rock opera group that retells the story of Mega man in a "1984" sort of way.
