I've seen guys post information relating to opening up particular ports to help Dark Souls' online elements run smoother. Can someone link me to or fill me in please?

Would only help depending on your modem/router setup. Also most if not all these days default will allow any ports required for online gaming automatically when required.

Also it will be rather easy to find the ports required as they are not game specific, rather they are console specific so you'd just need to look up PS3/360 port forwarding.

What you need to do is check if your consoles NAT rating. If it is OPEN then port forwarding will not help as it is already as best as can be. If it is STRICT or MODERATE then port forwarding could allow you to connect to more players.

I only know how to check this with a 360 not a PS3 as I believe you are a PS3 user I can't really help you check your NAT rating, but i'm sure if you google/youtube that it will be rather easy.

I know how to check the NAT type, though it's numbered, and I'm the one that could use port forwarding silly I'll Google what ports the Ps3 wants and do that, thank you sir

No problem. If you need any help with it let me know, I've had to set up port forwarding and a lot of other networking things all the time.

A little late to this party, but I found that putting my PS3 onto a static IP that is setup in the routers DMZ works like a charm, and gets me NAT2 (open) every time.

Yeah I set my ps3 on a static IP last night but I think I messed up the creation of the Dmz as it didn't change anything.

DMZ is not the proper way of doing it, however it is an easy way to get an open NAT. It's basically a shortcut. It will allow all network traffic to go to the set IP, but it won't work for any other devices on the network.

For me I have multiple Computers and consoles so it's not any help. But if it doesn't matter to you then it should do fine.

Should be easy to set up, I assume you have tried to do it right. If you haven't already tried, try searching for a guide/manual on the internet for your specific router. Usually though it's extremely simple just entering the static IP of your PS3 into the router config as Admin as saving those settings. Then restarting the router.

Well it wasn't that simple. The router has options to select which outside IPs are allowed free access as well and I think I misunderstood some terms and instead of DMZing my ps3 gave a specified IP free access to my network.

I'm currently editing Smough and Ornstein video so haven't gone about correcting my mistake.

    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

Use this to find your router.

    TCP Ports: 80, 443, 5223
    UDP Ports: 3478, 3479, 3658

Use these ports. Every port is the same for every router. it's video game specific. Just use the link to find the directions on how to do the port forwarding on your router, and you're good big grin

My point is there is no ports for 'Dark Souls'. They are just general ports for PS3 online, Or for Xbox live. They are posted all over the place, some will vary slightly as some include ports that are forwarded nearly always by default and some do not include those.
Such as TCP 80 is just a general http internet port.

I assume you mean no difference as in your NAT type has not changed? Well that just sucks.

Assuming you are doing it right which I think you are, the only other thing you could check is in your router settings is UPnP enabled. Usually it always is so I didn't bother asking. But basically it is just automatic port forwarding.

Anyway I'm off to sleep as I've been up the whole night. Cya another time. Hope you get it working.

And the reason I ask which ports for DkS is many resources say ports change based on which game, it's not uniform like Xbox.

Nothing is changing the NAT. Upnp was enabled, tho you should disable it on your xbox or ps3 if you're setting up port forwarding as they can interfere. Port forwarding and Dmz don't work with leaves me with one, possibly stupid, question, can I not change Nat since my ps3 is wireless?

Really I'm pretty certain the oroblem is with my new Isp and router as my ps3 has been NAT 2 on plenty of occasions in the past silly

Everyone just loves console wars silly

Nah, but if for PS3 the ports are different per game that could be a problem but would also be really weird too as I would think they should be the same. I know with Xbox they are the same so that's helpful.

But yeah plenty of times it could easily just be your router. I know my old one didn't like to be set to OPEN. So now I use a different one. I don't think your ISP would matter, but ya never know

Whatever it is it sucks thouh :|

Well its a Linksys E1000. After forwarding the ports failed, I found my Ps3 in the DHCP client list and used it's MAC address to put it in the Dmz, no difference, then i went so far as to lower the firewall and still no difference. It seems like while my router says its doing what I say, the actual changes aren't doing anything.

Note, I powered cycled the router after each settings change.

Can you think of anything else? I just need to fix this no matter what, and since my ps3 is the only thing on network for any length of time I'm not too concerned with security.

I'll try have a look for a decent guide for you to look at just to make sure you are doing everything right. But it sounds like you are.

One other thing I forgot to mention which could be the problem is that you may need to update the routers firmware. The fact that settings aren't applying properly could be solved in the firmware update, so try that.

It should either have a place in the router config to check for updates. Otherwise you'll just have to go to their site and manually download the update.
