So, for all you out there who don't use the DWGR, do you find any benefits to to having the fast roll instead? Does the shorter roll mean it completes quicker, making it easier to roll poke? That's my main question, but is there anything else?

Re: DWGR vs. Fast Roll
Other than aesthetics, I don't see any advantage of it. Sure, you get an extra ring slot, but you are sacrificing more in terms of defense and poise.

Unless you're a cannon, where defense is irrelevant.

Re: DWGR vs. Fast Roll
Maybe some things about the fast roll can be considered advantages (?), but they all seem so entirely subjective, and you are therefor missing way too many advantages of the DWGR that can maybe be viewed more objectively. The ring basically gives you more protection and more poise at higher speed. Of course as the pirate says it all depends on the playstyle, as always, but trying to view it as objective as it is possible in this game I don't know any ring that is equally powerful.
Edit: I'm sorry I didn't actually try to answer your questions specifically about the possible advantages of the fast roll, I always tend to generalize everything... I don't actually know much about the differences between the ninja roll and fast roll in terms of speed and "backstability" and such, better some of the gurus here explain it
Another edit: But I guess there are already a bunch of threads/researches about it somwhere?

Re: DWGR vs. Fast Roll
I prefer backstep to backflip - I feel the invincibility frames better with fast roll but thats because I am used to it.

Re: DWGR vs. Fast Roll
Fast roll actually goes slightly higher in the air, meaning you can sometimes get over obstacles you can't with the DWGR. 'course I've only found a few spots in Darkroot Forest where this is even worthwhile.
Also, testing has shown that there are different speeds of fast roll -- it's not just everything sub 25% is the same. Completely nekkid 0 encumbrance actually rolls slightly faster than someone just below the fastroll limit. So you can chain roll very fast, change direction quickly, and indeed get off some pokes/stabs faster. It's also a bit harder to go sailing off a cliff because the range is shorter.

Re: DWGR vs. Fast Roll
theres no advantage to any of them, i personally like the fast roll better when im using the large club since the ground pound puts me right next to them, with the flip ring i always flip to far and miss the ground pound wich gets me bs'd a lot.

Re: DWGR vs. Fast Roll
Faster backstep is the only advantage I've ever noticed. Apart from looking cooler in my opinion.

I prefer normal backstep than flip - I get better invincibility frames with my backstep and a easy counter rather than flipping too far back

Re: DWGR vs. Fast Roll
Thanks guys. Considering the build it's for, the better back step might make quite a big difference.
How about for roll poking?

Re: DWGR vs. Fast Roll
the poke specially with slow weapons works pretty good since its a little slower your opponent will miss the parry since they'll do it too early, it works for me with big weapons and it only takes one mistake for them for a 600+ hit if its a counter(no buff).

Re: DWGR vs. Fast Roll
I'm confused...
Maybe I should make my question clearer. Is there an advantage to the light roll over the DWGR when roll poking? For example, shorter roll = poke sooner after a roll.

Re: DWGR vs. Fast Roll
oh, im pretty sure its the same speed for both and the only difference is with the flip you just flip further so no, its the same time but im not 100% sure on it.

Re: DWGR vs. Fast Roll
The Distance between the rolls and flip vary from weight, however I find the Flip to be too Long. There is a longer no hit ratio, sure, but the normal rolls have enough of that already to survive Many forms of attacks, including spells and such.
As a Dude that uses rolls more than blocks, rolls compared to flips seem to have a better chance of survival; Looking at a Flip and Roll, the Side steps of a Flip seem shorter than a Roll, both Fast and Medium, however longer in terms of Front and Back. The Rolls seem more even in direction, while the Flips seem to Favour front and back more that sides, which seem to hinder the idea of variety of choice, which is a great tool to survive against anything... especially when some choices do not work as well as others. However, the Flips seem more accurate in terms of maneuvering to me.
Since I don't wear heavy armour, I don't need the flip ring or even Havel ring; Fast Roll is a pleasure, however Medium roll works almost just as well, however the length and speed are somewhat slower, of course in combat is less than a second I find. The Flip Ring takes up a Slot which can be used for better survival chances, as well as rings of reward such as silver and such.
Compared to A Fast or Medium roll, they are more useful for me than a flip, as I prefer more stability and variety, rather than have an easier chance of not getting hit. I am prepared to die, and if it comes than it is fine with me. You are expected to die, and removing it removes what makes the game good, I see it to be. of course, it is my own opinion, and only my own opinion.
