Most people tend to go for the DSS but split damage tends to cripple it and you really only get the most out of it with high faith as well as STR and DEX. At 40/40 it does 374 pure physical damage, and it usually hits from between 190-260 damage a hit against most people. (Depending on their HP that's 5-10 hits. It sounds like a lot but they add up. A lot of people try to poise through spear hits and end up taking 400 damage before I roll away.) Plus it weighs less and has a better moveset. You can even dead Angle with the 1h r2, which has an amazing range and no one expects it. I like to keep a spear as a backup to a GS because you really leave yourself open to fishers (and parry masters) without one, and if the fight is decently fair you can pressure your opponent and chip them down from relative safety. It's also a highly underestimated weapon that people see as weak, and I've actually noticed that people act more aggressively against it than the DSS, which leads to free backstabs (not that they do much damage with a spear).

Edit: About your actual build, i don't think it has enough poise. I can't remember the exact values but a 2h katana is probably the biggest weapon you can tank a hit from, which is not great. I think stunlocks will lose you a lot of fights.
I'm on the Xbox version, so the Elite Knight Armor poise is actually 46, more than enough to tank a few hits.

I have the forum to thank for this knowledge.

Not really. You can't even tank 1 claymore hit, you'll have to toggle out of the stun.

What breakpoint should I shoot for?

    Spoiler:

Here is a useful image to use to determine breakpoints. It is worth saving. I would aim for 54 or 63 poise, as the first will let you take a single two-handed Claymore hit and the other will let you take 2 consecutive two-handed katana hits so you won't have to really worry about stunlocks if you play it safe.

If I put Havel's gauntlets on I'll have more than enough....but oh how I hate Havel's Gauntlets...maybe if I'll carry em around just incase I need em.

I go 56, the claymore cut off, So If I screw up or lag attacks I'm not taking that extra hit.

I have a 40 poise caster, but if a buffed claymore hits me I'm just dead because I can't toggle out until the second (and fatal) hit.

I know the feeling...I have a 0 poise sorcerer, if the enemy manages to get a good hit in on me, I'm toast.

If you don't like Havel's Gauntlets, you can wear Black Iron Gauntlets and Steel Leggings.

If you don't want to wear Havel's Gauntlets then you can wear Giant's Legs+Gauntlets and keep your Elite Knight Head+Chest to give you 63 poise or 70 depending on your version. I would also suggest getting a Silver Knight Shield for the increased stability, and to take advantage of the extra weight you could be using. I have also placed in the +15 Composite Bow using poison arrows. Here is the link: http://tinyurl.com/7o8d4dp

It's not that I don't like em, it's just that I've been killed by so many Havel flip tanks that the whole armor set sorta has a stigma with me.

I suppose if I used em, I'd love em.

So? They kill you because the setup works.

That arguments like saying "I keep losing the fight when this guy shoots me, so I won't use a gun"
