Moonlight Butterfly and its relationship with the Geometry of the Dark Souls World)

Post by mickyplankton on Fri Jun 15, 2012 11:17 am

Hello all. What the heck does my topic title mean?

I will try to explain. Since i first loaded up this excellent and most addictive game - i have often wondered about the geometry of the gameworld - It is seemingly respectful of 3D spacial dimensions - but impossible to accurately track as you move through the gameworld. Things in general seem to be where they should be as you move up down, back forward and sideways etc. However it is very difficult to mentally map this as the perspective is always from whereever you are on the ground at the time (apart from a couple of cutscenes) and the gameworld is constructed in a way that means in general most areas are (mostly) visually separate from one another. I have wondered if From Software have been consistent in the geometry of the gameworld as they designed it.

I have noticed a major inconsistency in the geometry of the world. This can be viewed as you exit the bonfire (hidden behind the wall) outside Astorias door in Darkroot Garden. If you keep the Astorias door on your left as you exit - and head straight ahead (in the direction of Undead Burg) you can see the Moonlight Butterfly in the distance if you look UP and TO THE RIGHT.

However - to get to this Butterfly - you actually have to head in a generally LEFT direction. I have tested this visually a few times and the spacial geometry doesnt make any sense. It is impossible spacially for The Moonlight Butterfly to exist in both places.

    Thoughts?

I'm assuming the Butterfly would still have to be alive in your world to be able to check this out?

I'll give it a look in my game and see what the deal is. I honestly never noticed.

Yes - i guess - i noticed it on my 3rd Playthrough. At first i considered that there might be more than one Moonlight Butterfly in Darkroot Garden (as there are in Crysal Caves). However if you look closely from the viewpoint of the bonfire - you can see the shape of the small fortress and bridge confirming that it is the boss butterfly.

The bridge you fight the Butterfly on goes across the entire area.

So even though you move to the left to find the fog door, the butterfly is on the opposite end of the bridge where you enter an therefor is on the right side of the map.

You can actually inspect dark souls geometry with this cool program called "Dark Souls 3D Map Viewer".

If I remember correctly, the publisher of that vid included download link at the description.

What Ecko said. You head left out of the door which leads fairly parallel to the path you came in on and to the tower where you can summon Beatrice. I believe this tower is the one near the first path you walk by on your way to the Artorias door. When you reach the top to the fog door you're at the bridge (which you definitely walk under on the first path) and the butterfly comes down from the second tower (the one with the ember) to fight you.

The world isn't completely accurate. The pathway to get to the Archives is much shorter then it would have to be to actually GET to the archives based on what you can see from Anor Londo.

Also, I believe I actually ran the path carefully observing it, and if I remember correctly, the MLBF path does work. It's just one area, so it's not even like they are loading two separate maps.

Skarekrow basically hit the nail on the head. When you look up, you can also see the bridge where you fight the moonlight butterfly and then you see that the butterfly is resting on top of the building containing the divine ember. When you initiate the fight with the butterfly, it comes flying down from the top of the building containing the divine ember. I've never actually tested the direction you come out of the tower, but I'm almost positive that there as absolutely nothing wrong with the geometry of the moonlight butterfly.

I walked it a bunch of times cause I always wondered about that map. Used binoculars everywhere too. If you check from the tower with the ember you get a great view of everything all the way to the Artorias door

i dont see anything wrong with its geometry. To get to her you go left, but 3 lefts make 1 right. The only thing that might be different is that when you first arrive the darkroot garden you can see it resting at the bridge, when you get to it, it comes flying.

^When you first see it its actually resting on top of the tower and flies down to you, not on top of the bridge
