    New Developer Interview

Post by Eolan on Thu Jun 14, 2012 10:06 am

    http://www.edge-online.com/features/localising-dark-souls

So here's a recent developer interview (miyazaki) regarding dlc and localization for the souls series. Very interesting especially this part

When I was young and reading fantasy novels - and this is at an age
where I could only understand maybe half of what I was reading - there
was an allure to not knowing entirely what was going on. So I had this
idea that perhaps there would be some way to create that kind of feeling
in a game. My method of storytelling comes from that inspiration, from
the shadowy parts of a story or a legend that you can’t make out.

I think they were pretty successful don't you?

Good interview, but it still doesn't explain why they went with that fakey Ye Olde English dialogue and why they threw in "thou" everywhere and put "est" and "eth" at the end of words it really shouldn't be. FFXII had characters that spoke in nearly perfect Shakespearean English, and FF Tactics was excellent in that regard too, but for someone who actually knows a bit about the English language, it's a real immersion breaker.

I didn't think it was that bad. The ones that overdid it were lampooning it in one way or another (gwynevere did it so well i was suspicious of her before ever figuring out dark souls had a story lol). Also the rule sets for Middle English vary wildly from source to source, so to say that they are using Shakespearean affects incorrectly may not be saying much about their success. Also lordran speak is very different happy

^^Most of the characters were fine because they didn't try it, and generally the translation was really good, which is why it's really kind of surprising that a few characters actually spoke like that. I would have expected a british translation studio to know a bit better. My best guess is that in the original Japanese they were speaking in an overly archaic style and that they tried to carry that contrast over to the English version. Technically, I think middle english was a bit before Shakespeare's time, but it is a bit difficult to pin down the "correct" use of English in those times because so few people knew how to write that the language wasn't formalized.

Yes but i would suggest that it isn't shakespearean and rather chaucerian. With verbs, the use of est and eth in the present indicative doesnt always point to Shakespearean dialect. There are countless other variants that run through middle English which is what i think they were aiming for.

I had to dig out my old copy of the Canterbury tales (it's been a while) but I think you're right about the Chaucer. In a lot of ways it's more straightforward than Shakespearean english, and the syntax matches Dark Souls's dialogue perfectly. Nice catch!

Hey, they had memes back then! The term "OK" is actually derived from a time when English commoners would deliberately misspell words to make it how it sounds (as if spoken by, say, a modern redneck), so the term "all correct" became "oll korrect", which was abbreviated to "OK".

At least, that's what I've heard. Things like this have a way of being made up.
