by this question has probably been addressed before, but i'm not finding it in the search engine, so here it goes. My main character is on playthrough number 4 and i just got access to the online play through xbox live, i was wondering if anyone knew whether that would affect my ability to co-op with players from their first playthrough on through playthrough number ... whatever? i'm about lvl 210 now.

as long as the Soul Levels are within range, you can coop with people regardless of which NG+ they are on.

well at SL210 you wont get just NG players 
but yeah its done based on levels, just makes sense really that splitting it based on NG would be too hard to implement.
Though you might be hard pressed to find a random coop partner so maybe try asking on the player help board?

i can confirm this is possible
yesterday, i got a summon at parish, on my lvl 21 cleric from a lvl 26 mage who was on NG+
it was a nice unexpected challenge btw... despite the ornsteins armor a hit from an undead soldier would leave me with 10% health
