I've been looking at the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of pripyat and was wondering if it was worth buying?

    NO. DON'T BUY IT.

Sorry in my vehemence but I bought it expecting fun stuff and was extremely disappointed.

Sorry Jor, I totally disagree. Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat are both stunning, distopian games of complete win. Nothing I have ever played captures the feeling of being a scavanger desperately trying to survive in a blasted wasteland like stalker. From wandering around trying to fend of packs of mutant dogs with nothing but a rusty sawn off and a pair of jeans, to creeping through a toxic swamp with a full environment suit hunting invisible mutants that can tare your head off in abut two seconds with your heart gently pounding away. It's like playing a much more lethal version of 'The Road' by Cormac Mccarthy

They are also the only games which have ever actually made me a bit scared of what's ahead. I even leapt out of my seat shrieking the first time I met a bloodsucker.

Sadly Clear Sky was a bit lame, it had a rather rubbish faction system which really didn't work well.

The only thing I would advise you to do is install the 'Complete' mod (one available for each game) released by a chap called ArtistPavel http://artistpavel.blogspot.co.uk/. These TRANSFORM the game. He basically grabbed all of the improved graphics mods and fan/official patches (Stalker was a buggy mess at release in every incarnation) and combined them all into one easy to use package. It doesnt change the mechanics of the game, it just layers on big handfuls of atmosphere and awesome and makes even the original look like a pretty modern game.

TL,DR: Stalker is total win (apart from Clear Sky) with the 'complete pack' mod.

WHAT ARE YOU WAIT FOR STALKER? I SAID COME IN!

This game ******* rules dude. its much like dark souls, as it will have you pretty challenged.

Personally, i liked Clear Sky as much as the others, the faction system didnt work that great, but it was fun trying to fight for the fringes of "the zone"

I would also look into getting the "Misery" mod for Shadow of Chernobyl when youve finished your first playthrough (if you ever decide to leave the zone, haha). it includes alot of game improvements from complete, but also includes new gameplay. You choose between 3 russian military spec-ops classes, but regardless of your cool starter gear, you will die. alot.

Thanks Zechk, do you know if theres another one coming out soon? If its not too far off i might wait for a new one.

Sadly, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has been cancelled, again. 😢

What about the gameplay? Closer to a shooter or an RPG?

Well, Zechk, after that minireview, I might download the complete pack (I've never even heard of that till now,) and give STALKER another chance...

Or at least I would if I could connect to Steam here. :|

Did you install the complete mod? That has all the fan patches and bug fixes the community has released since launch and includes the official patches IIRC.

Ok, installed complete, kindof fixed, but not really. I love the game, its playable, but, if I say, start a new event, it stops responding for a minute, If I travel between Yanov and Skardovsky I'm staring at a loading screen forabout 20 minutes, same with Loads.

I read on a forum this may be attributed to there being a maximum loading of 3GB and it does this when it exceeds that?

Gonna try the RAM fix, but I bought the game on Steam and dont know how to install it that way.

I have been playing it fine on Vista 64 with 4gb of RAM. I recently upgraded to Win 7 64 and that's fine too sad

I'm assuming you have done the really obvious stuff like graphics driver updates etc?

I did a scan for out of date drivers, only one that isnt up to date is an Adapter (GeForce 430) but I cant find a direct fix, only BS driver programs to fix it.

I tried playing just now, was able to take a shower before it finished loading, and I got the error "X-ray 1.6 has stopped working" I was traveling to Yanov again after doing upgrades. The previous save works fine though.
