Is Oscar the God of War?

Post by DoughGuy on Sun Jun 03, 2012 9:46 pm

    Let's take a look.
First of the God of War is erased from the annals. By his armour Oscar is a "nameless knight", the only reason we know his name is from the text dump files.
Believes in the strength of his arm. If you've ever fought him you know he prefers to 2 hand his ewapon and hits like a boss.
Watches over his warriors. Did you knwo that Oscar left around 20 see huidance messages throughout Lordran for the chosen iundead to find? Not only that he literally watches over you at the beginning when he gives you the key. Add in the fact he does this for a legion of chosen undead.
And his face. Did you know Oscar is possibly the only faceless NPC? If you clip through his helm you get nothing. Now why would developers not want us to see his face? Who would he bear resemblence too?
Yes the god of war could be undead, part of being the dark lord could entail that.

The only thing I have yet to find is how the SMs keep rolling after his death.

    Discuss.

Has anybody noticed that every npc we suspect of being the God of War is from Astora? First Solaire, then Andre, now Oscar. I still believe it to be Solaire but this is an interesting possibility as well. The main support here seems to be that he watches over his warriors through messages. However this can also be explained by the fact that he went everywhere you did and knew others would likely come after and wanted to help them along.

The faceless part is interesting though and I can't explain it.

Well damn, I was all ready to come in here and say no but credit to you you made it sound very plausible. I still think its solaire but if you want additional help for your argument he never uses spells and solaire does, I believe the description of great lightning spear states,
"but had respect only for arms, and nothing else."

although the faceless part I would attribute to large swathes of detail about him being cut content.

    1. yes. 2. Enjoy the +3 rep that you just got cause I clicked thank instead of quote.
@Sun There is Siegemeyer from catarina. But isnt the fact he went everywhere and knew people would come after him proof he wanted to watch over people?
@Dan I do my best happy.

I didn't even know he was considered.

Hmm as cool as Oscar being the God of War would be I find it unlikely. I just find the evidence here to be much more lacking than for Solaire. Now I do consider him more likely than Andre though.

You see I think thers too much against Solaire and not enough for Andre or Siege so I havent hitched my bandwagon to any of them yet. Then I though of this last night and had to post it. Just waiting for Skare and his rants to come along.

I don't know if I have a full fledged rant on this since we all know I'm in the Andre camp. However, I've seen the use of magic come up as evidence of who can't be the God of War a lot of times now thanks to the "respects" only arms quote. I think that's false evidence. "Respect" is not the same as "utilize." So while the God of War (it's Andre by the way) might only respect arms that doesn't mean he can't use magic. I "respect" my Great Scythe most of all but I have been know to WoG campers into oblivion (not the game although that would be cool) if the need arises. I don't even like that miracle!

Also the term "arms" refers to any weapon or ammunition. Sunlight Spear is a lot like ammo and is definitely only a weapon. So the "respect" arms part could have two alternate meanings. He only respects arms, including offensive miracles and had no desire to learn heal, great heal, seek guidance etc. Or it could mean he had no respect for his peers, only in his ability to fight. Why was he cast out? The other gods found a problem with the dude. Maybe it was mutual. Maybe he started the feud. Gyndolin is off painting with Ariamis and Gywnevere is making magics that let people cooperate and coexist better and The God of War (remember it's Andre by the way) says "What happened to us being bada$$ and going to war and killing things? That's what I respect! No offense Ariamis but.....f yourself. You too bro. And sis? That magic is a waste of time. Dad? Come on dude....let's go slay something, just like old times. Why is everyone giving me the look of death? Guys? Guys......

    Spoiler:
Crap. Where'd all my powers go? Who am I? Oh well.....might as well look over my peeps still."

Ok.....I guess I had a rant in me

But Im not sure you addressed the title question at all lol. I think you more just argued about what the god of war fundamentally is.

Also someone did say once that Oscar was meant to be a rival and become the dark lord (they couldnt provide evidence though) and if the god of war is the pygmy I think thats pretty good evidence for Oscar.

Post by skarekrow13 on Fri Jun 08, 2012 1:16 pm

I answered the title question. It's Andre so therefore not Oscar....

You provide some good Oscar stuff but his equipment would require not only loss of memory but a few other plot elements to be what it is. As far as I can tell there's no sun symbolism or anything similar to Anor Londo. All of the other known deities have some representation that connects them. That would be alright since Andre doesn't wear anything symbolic either but his absence of other symbols could just mean loss of memory/loss of rank/loss of attachment. Oscar on the other hand has added other symbols which would require that he aligned with a new clan/family/etc. The Crest Shield and his armor are reminiscent, more than any other set, of traditional feudal themes and state that he is an "Elite" or "High Ranking" knight. In a traditional feudal system that would be lineage or land based rather than of heroic deeds. The crest on the shield would be family most likely and not just given out. The armor also notes that the symbol on it is "heraldic" meaning that they are attached to a family, and that specific word means a long line or genealogy typically. It's unlikely he would be adopted into an old family to become a high ranking knight. The Blue Surcoat, also the color of the shield, is another nod to symbolism from family etc. The shield is noted to be "one of the enchanted ones" meaning it is not only a family shield but a specific heirloom likely. The heraldic (family) symbol noted on the Blue Surcoat is noted to be "fire warding" as well, also placing it in heirloom or special status. So for Oscar to have been the God of War and then become an elite knight of Astora he would have to go through the added steps of working his way into a notable family of Astora and be entrusted with their most precious gear and symbols. It's possible that occurred (or he killed the owner and took them) but it's a much more difficult plot line and overly complex to be the best answer for me. Also, he would have had to have been entrusted absolutely to be chosen to carry out the family mission. My belief is that Oscar is just what the armor says he is.....an Elite Knight from a land in which the legends of Lordran have been passed to (which could be all lands to be honest since we see lots of variety) and his family has dedicated themselves to being the chosen among the chosen.

But your forgetting the god of war lost his power centuries ago. He had time to leave for astora and make a new family there. His skill at combat would have brought him great prestige from the land, in fact its posssible his actions are what shaped astora into what it is, a fuedal country who worships knightly skill.

I didn't forget that. Like I said, it's possible just overly convoluted for my tastes. I can think of a few scenarios where he could have changed his persona entirely but to me it's a bigger leap than Andre or Solaire. I'd like to say again you make great arguments for him I just feel different on this one.

But the sword he uses is from a high commander of Astora. He seems more to me to be just a knight and no more.

An important one, but simply a knight.

And the fact that he talks about his family, if he was the god of war Gwyn wouldn't have have a legend about himself getting replaced on the thrown.

He simply doesn't seem strong enough or have a big enough connection. I mean, we don't know he left the signs everywhere, and there are a ton of knights with full face helmets. Just doesn't seem to be very solid.

The signs all have the picture of him for their creator. FROM doesnt do things for no reason. All the other knights have stories already. Oscar doesnt. You have to piece his together, just check out my thread.
