Have any of you experienced this before?

Hi guys...
The other night I was playing with my sl 160 toon. I wanted to level it further up but it is really hard to get summoned at such a high level.
I thought to give PvP a try and see if I could learn and earn some souls in the process.
I decided to go to the burg and do some invasions since I have read here that the most honorable arena is located there.
Anyway... After having my *** handled to me several times something strange really happens.
Dark phantoms start to show up ... I was being gravelorded... But how?
I had already killed the Taurus Demon and I thought that you could only be gravelorded if the area's boss was still alive...
Anyway, it was a cool experience though, the first time I get bp's in my world.

That happened to me last night in Darkroot Garden. I already killed Moonlight Butterfly but saw the gravelord sign and was able to invade him. Never seen that happen before.

I am pretty sure only the gravelord has to have the area boss alive in order to curse worlds, but as the person infected you do not need to keep your area boss alive.

I had a few bad run ins with red phantom silver knights in anor londo when I wasn't expecting them after clearing the area.

Yeah, chain pulled bp knights 2 shotting you would suck.

It is kind of strange how the gravelord covenant works though. Surely he hadn't killed the area's boss because I could invade him twice. One as a DW and the other through his sign.
It was exactly outside the Bonfire.

What's really strange is you were able to invade with the boss dead. Very curious.

Well I was using the red stone, the first time I invaded him. I had a lot of soft humanity so I gave it to The serpent in the abyss and it gave me a full red stone. Like the Darkmoon one but red... Obviously.
The second time I saw his GL sign where the hollow with the ballista is and used it ti invade him.

Gravelord's can infect you whether you've killed the boss or not and I believe can even infect you when you're hollow. Also, I'm able to gravelord in anor londo even though I've already killed off O&S so I'd assume that the area boss doesn't have to be alive for the gravelord's side either (also the O&S area makes a great pvp arena )

They never have infected me, luckily.

Well, the red phantoms that appeared in my world were hollow warriors, so actually they weren't hard to kill but they can deal more damage that the normal hollow warriors though.
Honestly I wouldn't like to be fighting with red phantom skelly doggies...

The gravelord needs to NOT kill the boss to gravelord you, not the other way around.

I had that happen to me a couple times, I like to revist Anor Londo and co-op a lot
and the one time I decided to go back to see the Giant blacksmith I noticed all the red phantoms.

Edit: I couldn't find any sign anywhere but apparently the f'er was defeated and
the red phantoms vanished then.

You seem to have an affection for the two arachnid witch sisters. What's the story here, do you feel connected with them, and if so why is it? For empathy, or for similar stance.
