Ultra Great Weapons. Empty Ultra Great Weapons.

Post by DamageCK Fri Jun 01, 2012 3:00 am

So after playing against, and getting whipped by, Rant and his Demon Great Machete a bunch of times, I thought, "Man, that thing is pretty boss. I'm tired of all my DEX builds, so I'll make my own DGM build."

After a couple days of PvP, I've discovered that in my hands this build is mostly awesome for Ultra Great Whiffing. It's SOOO hard to connect hits. And of course it's really effing cool to do four to six hundred damage per connected hit, but they mostly only land if I attack while the baddies are attacking and we just trade damage. This is not ideal. By the time I've finish my first swing I've been hit at least twice, and usually get stunned as a result.

I quit PvPing pretty much everywhere except the Burg to avoid ganks, and unfortunately everyone in the Burg knows how to roll BS. I've tried unlocking mid-swing and aiming behind me, as well as dead angling and all that jazz, but I mostly get phantom hits through roll invincibility. And stunlocking is pretty difficult because (A) you have to be able to hit them a first time, and (B) the baddies have like ten minutes to roll out before I can get another swing in.

Trying real hard not to BS also, even though it hits for at least a thousand damage without hornets. Parries rule though, and they will die.

So what I'm getting at here is how the hell do you use a weapon like this effectively in PvP? Logically, I shouldn't use it at all, but I'm determined to kick some *** with it. I'm also really, really bored with all the DEX weapons.

Build is 120. 50vit 40end 12att 40str and 31dex because I occasionally use the GLGS. Enlighten me, guys.

Baiting roll bsers and destroying them. Fighting unlocked 50% + of the time. Memorising resopnses to attacks and capitolising on the patterns. Patience. Learning to roll bs roll bs attempts.

I actually just started fighting unlocked all the time, apart from parry attempts. It helps quite a bit. It'll take a lot of getting used to after playing with dex weapons for almost the entire duration of my PvP experience. I'm still digging it though, even if I do get pooped on more often than not.

Str weapons are tough to use (and not get BSed). Roll R1 should be your staple, try to hit them with just the tip. And, roll BS them too. Don't spam it, but do it on occasion. It'll make you less predictable.

I have found with str weapons you have to plan your attacks. One option is to be completely unpredictable. Another is to take your time, allow them to think they know what you are going to do, then do something different. Timing... learning how long it takes before you will actually connect. Switch from swinging two handed to one handed and back again.

keep your distance, rolling r1 will be your main attack ans since the poke thing has really good reach always try to hit them with the tip so if you miss youre still far enough to not get bs'd and they cant parry, its gonna be hard to get it right, specially in the burg since most people just spam roll bs. what i do sometimes is wait to get some distance between you and your opponent an just do a reg r1 attack, they will eitha runa nd try to attack thinking they can get a hit in and they end up getting parried and if theyre going for a bs just press r1 and aim to your back since youre doing this locked off and theyre gonna get a DGM to the face.

When you unlock to hit them you should roll the(EDIT I forgot to say roll the joystick on your controller) in the general direction of the enemy if you try to immediately try to aim straight for them in some cases it will cause your toon to turn around in the opposite direction that the enemy is going and in doing so presents them with a small window for BS.

also when fighting parry fishers unlock and look 35 degrees to their left or right and not right at them also remember that you can extend the time between the second swing and the first swing by 1.2 sec at the max which will keep them from parry-ing on the second swing and then your free to alternate the swing times from then on and try not to get repetitive.

Learn your shields cause in 3 swings of and ultra you can drain the stamina of someone blocking with a blk shield leaving them open to a 4th swing. you cant have a 4th swing unless you have 38 end (at least) and the ring of FAP lesser shields that are +10 and below usually shield break by the second swing.

leave lots of time between your swings on purpose because most people know that large weapons drain lots of stamina and like to attack when they think you’re out of stamina.

save your 4th swing if you can till the moment when they least expect it, use only three and then lure them in for the 4th.

EDIT: on another note poise is really important for heavies our objective is to trade hits because we know that we hit harder 76 poise will stop 1 hit from an two handed Ultra and if your both swinging at the same time and he has less poise you will stunlock him while you just shrug off his hit and keep going. And if you both have the same poise then its about who hits first = who will be stunlocked first.

My recommendation would not be to neccesarily change your fight stye but to use equipment to adapt.

I like to beat people at their own game. I will give you an example.

Last night I was invaded by a guy and I could tell he was a stunlocker, we traded blows was a good fight, I ended up losing in the end because he finally caught me with stunlock. I retrieve my souls, reverse hollow and use the dried finger to get him agaim. He invades me again, I loaded up on poise gear and ignore mobility now that I know how he plays. Full havels and wolf ring for a whopping 161 poise. And I stand there. He rushes me we trade blows and I stunlock the hell out of him. and kill him easy. He invaded me again 5 min later and black crystaled out, as he did not know how to counter what I did to him. He sent me a message about 20 min later asking how I did that to him, so I told him. If you are relying on stunlock as well, you may benefit by changing your gear around to exceed what your oppenent is wearing.

Also learn to counter what they try to do based on weapons instead of just focusing on one weapon. When I see someone fishing for a roll BS I equip my BKGA and one hand it. And I fight unlocked as they atttempt a roll BS I turn behind me and swing. The large swing radius prevents the BS usually and even if they do get it, I usually hit them at the same time so the damage is negated.

Also in my opinion the more you swap weapons the less predictable you are. Also as you use these weapons you will see how thay are used and be more effecitve in countering them.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Happy hunting.

    twisted

Bring in the Hammer! the Hammer! the Hammer! Bring in the Demon Hammer!

A tree, a stone archtree, it once was; Broken branch is now a Hammer that sounds like metal. Listen to it break there spins. Weapons make people stagger, hurt, bleed... Hammer breaks their spines, lying on the ground. They would prey, but their kneecaps are broken.

It's been mentioned a couple times already, but definitely: roll-R1 is your best friend! (Just don't get predictable and parried! Throw some extra rolls in there for good measure.) The roll-R1 actually has a lot of phantom range to begin with in PvE (hits farther than it looks like it should), so with PvP's lag, it only becomes more useful.

I find the Great Club to be a ton of fun, but it's not to great against Burg backstabbers. The Greatsword, on the other hand, is amazing! It's pretty much exactly like a Great Club, but with better range on its attacks. Roll-R1 and R2 are great moves with the Greatsword.

I dispute the claim that the roll r1 should be your main attack. With clubs, yeah, roll away. With swords though, the regular r1 is how I get almost all my kills. I out range almost everyone after all, clever deadangling is how I get most of my kills. Trading and baiting are my main tactics to land blows.

Dead Angling will work. But ultra-greatswords R1 is so slow and easy to parry. If you're not dead-angling, you're begging to get parried...

S why it works. Basic empty swing a few times, they move in to parry, swivel. Same as roll bsers actually.

I've also been baiting attacks with fireball cancels. Plus, if you screw up and throw it anyway you can usually connect a swing from inside the splash.
