    Continue or start over?

Post by alexcolodner on Wed May 23, 2012 12:51 pm

So I have a problem, and need some advice on how to proceed...

I am a decent chunk of the way through the game. I am level 40, and just finished Blighttown. I went to the blacksmith Andre of Astora, and I accidentally hit him. He is now hostile. I have not really upgraded any weapons at this point yet. I would go ask Oswald for Absolution and pay the 20k souls, but I had a similar encounter with him earlier in the game (sloppy fingers I guess) and he is dead.

First of all, are there any other options I have at this point to be absolved or to make Andre of Astora not be hostile? It seems that he is probably one of the most important blacksmiths in the game.

If not, is it worth playing through the rest of the game at this point, or just starting over? I would really like to keep playing but don't want to miss out on important thing because of my mistakes. Also I only really have a couple hours tops each day to play during the week because of work and only have a few hours each weekend to play so it isn’t like I will be able to play a few days straight to get back to where I am. It will take a few weeks.

So what are your thoughts? I really appreciate the feedback.

Without Andre you can't do regular upgrades, but with the other three blacksmiths you can do elemental or magical upgrades. You will also get a lightning weapon later on that, when upgraded, can see you through the rest of the game until you can see Andre in NG+.

I would say start over, it won't take you too long to get to that point that you've made it that far, that's a decently early on area and a fairly average level. Now if you don't have as much time to play though and that is an issue, you can do as Neon said.

First off, welcome to the forum.

I'd say start over, because Andre is pretty much needed to get some of the best gear in the game. Sounds bad, but he's the only person that can ascend your gear to +10 and +15, as well as make divine and occult weapons.

I would start over for sure, you need Andre to get +10 equipment which is necessary for quite a few upgrade paths and also for all the boss weapons/shields. Andre does a lot for you: modify equipment to +10 and +15, Divine, Occult, and Raw upgrade paths. Start over, especially if you are going for the trophies because you get 4 upgrade trophies from him alone. If you do not start over I suggest upgrading via fire or magic depending on your build. Since you can not obtain boss weapons I suggest obtaining the Gravelord Sword and upgrading that to +5 asap with all your demon titanite (only item you can use demon titanite on other than boss weapons) That will provide a decent weapon before getting +10 fire or +5 enchanted weapon. So it is up to you, the game certainly is beatable without him, and you will get him back in ng+ happy

don't start over you can find one of every type of weapon ingame. Just upgrade them at their respectable blaksmiths. Go for lightning and fire first. If your a mage go for magic and enchanted.

I say start over. After doing the first areas once already you should breeze through them a second time. Andre is really important.

    Oh and stop hitting npcs

    Are you on xbox?

if you are I can give every peice of equipment you had before you had to start over and a few undead souls at least to get you to level 30-35.

I wont give you any maxed out gear but I can at least give your old gear back to you and help you out with a boss or two.

I can also + it to where it was at before.

I was going to ask the same thing friend, very Nobel of you.

I would really consider starting again for reason stated above.
If you are considering carrying on I think you will find the Catacombs very difficult to pass with out having the Divine weapon up grade available, its not imposable (kill the guy`s with the lanterns as quick as poss) although it will be very frustrating.

On a positive note you now know the way to go to get back to where you are now,so you should be able to cut some time off by this.
Also myself and GkMrBane are willing to give you some gear and Armour to give you the jump start.(If you play on XBL?.)

He cant make lightning weapons without andre unless he descends the crystal halberd. And Im not even sure if you can do that.

Thank you for all of the advice everybody.

So last night I decided to try starting over. After making a new character and going through the first area I got very anxious. As I did things I remembered how many other things I need to do in order to get back to where I was. I was also really invested into the game and don't think I can wait another 20 week or two in order to progress from where I am (for a game with a low-level story, it sure does suck you in).

I went back and read over what you all have said and did a bit of digging on my own as well about the repercussions of not having Andre or Oswald. As long as I don't hit any other npcs (which I will be super careful about) I think I can get through to NG+. I got invaded earlier in the game and during the battle the invader dropped a Lightening Demon Spear +5 which will be helpful. I also have a buddy who I have been playing a few areas behind who said he will Ascend weapons to +10 for me if I need. I have a divine weapon now for the Catacombs, but might not be strong enough... I guess I will see how that plays out.

So despite what some of you said, I am going to give continuing a shot. If it does not work out, I will start over.

To GkMrBane and Bioraptor... I really appreciate your offer. I was surprised to get that type of response and am very thankful for it. If I start over I will PM you and see if we can work something out.

Wish me luck... Will report back when I have smashed my xbox and microwaved the game disk in frustration.

If you already have a divine weapon weapon then you can upgrade it normally with a weapon smithbox at the bonfire. You only need the blacksmiths for initial upgrades to a different path. Like +5 normal to divine
