    Dragon's Dogma is here !

Post by Katakato on Tue May 22, 2012 3:53 am

So, who's taking a break from DkS to take a shot at Dragon's Dogma ?
I herd it's pretty challenging, maybe the developers are finally starting to get it right again, hate it when i feel like the game is holding my hand as i play it.

Only one save file that constantly get's overwritten with auto save so it's kind of like Dks since i never liked the whole save, make a mistake / load system.

Was glad to see that the actual weight & muscle build of your character actually has some in game differences, big guys have bigger stamina consumption, slow stamina regeneration & slow movement speed but can carry more stuff, are harder to knock down & when jump on monsters can be harder to push off.

The New Game + is in & you can change your appearance/class if you ever get bored.
This is a nice addition since you only have 1 save.
Also, the combat system looks & plays great, it's the combat in The Witcher that ultimately made me loose the will to play although the game was almost flawless in all other aspects.

I only started but it feels like something worth checking out.
    Sadly no multilayer sad

I personally could use a break since I'm kind of playing non stop since release...well, i did take a little break to play Deux Ex but other than that Dks was the only game i played.

Dragon's Dogma seemed like something worth checking out & it truly is a fun game.

My copy should arrive tonight, looking forward to it.

I've been horsing around with Witcher 2 on Xbox and I actually kinda like the combat system. I put (wasted?) two skill points on Footwork, which greatly increased the range of my combat rolls and now I can slide in and out of contact a la Dark Souls. Dagger throwing is also pretty epic with some skill points in it. My sword does 20-30 dmg, but a thrown dagger does 50-70.

I hope you guys give it a better response than some of the critics are giving it. 78 metascore so far for the PS3 version, it's either a game that lost of it's potential, or an unappreciated game going under the radar, I'm hoping for the latter.

i was on the fence about buying it day one but im picking it up tonight. i was actually just coming here to make the same post. i like the variety in the character creation, and the spells and combat seem really interesting. i am very happy to hear most reviewers call it challenging, the demo was far too easy. i will not stop playing dark souls completely but i will be trying out dragons dogma for the next month or so. im just not going into it with super high expectations. the ur-dragon boss battle trailer kinda had me sold on it, here it is for anyone who happened to not see it.

I have played the demo and I thought it was awesome so yeah, I'm definitely gonna get it! However, I live in Europe so I can first get it on friday. In the demo I already made my characters and my pawn's name is Solaire.

Hope to hear about your experiences, people. I don't like the "videogame guru" aspect of gaming reviewers.

I just hope the close-in shots the demo had - whenever a companion offered to assist you - can be deactivated. It was so obnoxious.

Put in a few hours last night. It was pretty fun actually. Some non-spoilery highlights:

-- The loot gathering aspect is pretty addictive. It's like Gothic or other similar games where goodies are scattered all over the place. But many of them seem to reset after either a certain amount of time, and/or loading different map areas. I've mined the same piece of ore in a cave 4-5 times, and got some of my best loot by repeatedly hitting a chest hidden halfway down a cliff.

-- There's a surprising amount of climbing in this game. By using the jump button when next to a wall or outcropping you can often do a pullup, and then from there continue to climb all over the place. There are a lot of hidden things to be found this way, including some I'm not sure what to do with (in one spot I found a very hard to reach bird's nest that seems to light up when I look at it, but don't get any command prompts or anything). Keep an eye open for places you can climb up or drop down and you'll find lots of stuff.

-- The pawns are sort of interesting. After some intro levels, basically you design a "main" pawn that apparently other people can summon as well. It seems to be seamless, I had my main pawn summoned 4-5 times last night according to reports I got even though I was using him as well. (Mine is named Torgo, and looks and talks exactly like him which of course explains his massive popularity). I used a few other people's too and even kindly upgraded their equipment a bit. Thankfully nobody can loot your pawn; if they summon him and unequip his stuff you get it back yourself.

-- The boss fights are fun if not quite as strategic as I expected. There's still a lot of spamming, but you can indeed grab onto boss and do special attacks, or sometimes wrestle them to the ground. Climbing onto one can actually be a good way to avoid getting hurt sometimes, although you need to watch your stamina bar.

All in all the game is no Dark Souls, but it is pretty entertaining and seems to be a very solid sandbox RPG. I'm sure there are lots of nuances I haven't experienced yet, but I did enjoy going out at night with my lanterns lit and getting chased around by wolves and goblins in the dark.

    Sounds pretty fun.

What's your opinion on the overall strategy and preparation element in the game guys? That's what I'm most interested in.

Yes, there seems to just be the one savefile. It's actually is tricky, at one point I had to quit without saving (a menu option) after I messed up a shopkeeper purchase screen and blew 10,000 gold on 400 empty vials or soemthing. It autosaves on quests etc, and you can also do a hard save on command.

As for strategy, there may be more later but for now small fights are just spam, and boss fights are like a big WWE wrestling match since your allies can also pile onto bosses. There is a pause button and you can use consumables instantly it seems so that doesn't really lend itself to careful play. I am running a warrior, so I'd just spam and then heal while paused.

I see. For your pawns do you bring in 2 other players to fight with your pawn? Is bringing in the right type of Pawns vital and equipping them well needed, or is it again something that isn't necessary?

How difficult is it compared on a scale from skyrim to dark souls?

Yes, you can have 3 pawns -- your "main" pawn that you get to design a few hours into the game, and then two other random ones you can basically hire from other players at certain sort of waypoint things. For higher level ones it looks like you have to pay these sort of discipline/character points to hire them, presumably to discourage you from being able to just hire a 50th level fighter to guard your 3rd level main character. The pawns will show up with their own equipment as outfitted by their human player, and you see all that ahead of time sort of like phantoms in Dark Souls when you look at their summon sign. I hired one guy because his owner had somehow already gotten him outfitted in half plate with a greatsword. At first the server seems to give you a random possible assortment, but you can "favorite" ones you like, and also search by ranking or name I think. Btw the pawns are all computer controlled, so it's not actual other players playing with you unfortunately. The supposed benefit of this for the pawn owner is that when their pawn comes back to them in their world, the owner gets some items and the pawn presumably keeps any new gear they found along the way (the pawns pick up items themselves sometimes). Still not sure how all that works; as I said sometimes I'd get a msg that my pawn had been summoned and returned with X items even though I was also using him in my world.

In terms of party makeup, it's very familiar to any RPG person. There are 3 types of character: warrior, strider (i.e. ranger/archer) and mage. Mages also get some healing skills. I went with a bread and butter 2 warrior, 1 strider, 1 mage buildout and it worked fine. Some foes do seem more susceptible to magic or arrows or melee so it helps to have variety. But I also suspect you can get away with just you and your main pawn if you want (doubt you can play solo with no pawns). I wasn't really tracking how xp was paid out, but everyone was leveling pretty fast so I don't think it was divided by # of pawns.

I thought Skyrim difficulty was a joke, but I'd say so far this is maybe 6/10 on a Dark Souls scale. The pause/healing makes it fairly easy, although they did add a nice feature where you only fully heal at an inn. So you can keep healing during a long fight but your max hp nonetheless keeps dropping so you do need to be a bit careful. I've killed 3 bosses and not died yet, but have had some close shaves particularly with knockdowns and pack enemies. Mage spells also seem very slow to cast so you need to guard your mages while they wind up, and you can't expect them to heal you instantly. You can issue very basic commands to your pawns using the directional buttons, but mostly they run around on their own. AI seems good and they also often give you handy tips or point out things you may have missed (one actually told me he saw a chest down a cliff that I missed).

Since I'm writing an essay anyway, I should note that another preparation element is that there is a sort of crafting/alchemy system you can use at inns too. I've only scratched the surface of this, but you can combine or refine all sorts of items and ingredients to make equipment/improved healing items etc. I suspect that will become important once I get farther along, particularly since encumbrance is a factor and healing item weight is not negligible so I'll want to only carry high quality stuff. But some of the healing items look like Demon Soul's grasses which is pretty sweet.

Thanks befowler and Fruit, think I might be worth a punt. However I'm gonna give it a little time before I buy it so I'm not spending a load of money on a game I probably will only play through once, twice at most.
