No. Its because you're linked directly to the other player instead of servers. It means that instead of your signals both being sent to a server , they're sent to each other which takes twice as long. hence lag.

Theres more to it but thats the basics.

I'm probably wrong, but I thought it was that when you invade into another player's world their console becomes the server, so there's a direct host advantage even if it takes awhile for your info to get to them. For them it may appear they hit you with say a soul spear, but to you you totally dodged it... it will be the hosts "experience" that trumps yours. As invader you must anticipate where they are and what they will do about a second ahead, depending on how laggy the connection is. Attack empty space where you think they're trying to backstab you from and viol! a backstab. I guess it works.

I'm also curios about how this works though... as it may be different specifically for Dark Souls...

    I don't think there's any host advantage.

As for the lag... We have to account for geographic distances too! Half the day I'm only getting connected with Japanese players. You can both have the best internet on the planet... the signal still has to go across the planet.

Best solution would be region-locking, but that would be inconvenient. There's probably some clever coding tricks that could be employed, but I'm not certain. I think the lag could be better if From hired (or received) some outside help from more experienced online devs, but that's not likely to happen at this point. Hopefully for the next game.

for some reason, possibly placebo, I win 4 to 1 getting invaded, but I lose 1 to 4 when I'm invading...

I can say that in my personal experience, there is considerably less lag on my end when I'm hosting. Maybe I'm lucky? Seems to me there is a host advantage. Playing against Japanese players is a hassle on both ends. Like BLA1NE was saying, doesn't matter how good your connections are, it's still got a long way to travel.
