Re: How good is the Dark Sword?
It's one of the better straight swords, and a pretty awesome weapon to take on a 40/40 build. Out of the straight swords it's only surpassed in damage by the Sunlight Straight Sword, though the Darksword is heavier and can stun lock a bit better. The special R2 is kind of underwhelming though. It's slow, has poor range, and doesn't combo well, though I believe it does hit in front and behind you. All in all I'd rate it as the second best straight sword, just after the Sunlight Straight Sword (and all you out there ready to sing the Balder Side Sword's praises, buffing builds are dumb, 40/40 is where it's at )

Good damage and guard break ability, but requires both strength and dexterity to wield it effectively and the heavy attacks requires practise.

Re: How good is the Dark Sword?
I currently have it at +15 so i can use Various resins on it as well. It works really well if you can use the Forward + R1/Rb kick to your advantage.

Merely an attempt at a humorous way of stating an opinion
Buffing builds are great, but overused and honestly pretty unoriginal, while 40/40 builds provide interesting variety by tapping into the full potential of weapons not many players use. The BSS is commonly referred to as the only viable straight sword because it only scales with DEX and can be buffed, but I find it more fun to make use of the other weapons by taking their damage as far as it can go

Nothing is at its best elemental. +15 with 40 Str and/ or 40 Dex, that's how you make a weapon its best.Garl Vinland wrote:Its ok, I would make it elemental to make it at its best.

Re: How good is the Dark Sword?
I love the Darksword. And actually, I'm pretty sure that it is better if you make it enchanted/magic. I'm not positive on that though! I'm pretty sure I remember that it had a better AR if enchanted at 50 int than if +15 and 40 dex/str. Don't hold me to that though.

Re: How good is the Dark Sword?
Yes, you'll get better AR with elemental and magic upgrade paths, but you'll get less damage from it because of the split attack types. +15, with proper scaling, does more damage, despite the lower AR.Imarreteet23 wrote:I love the Darksword. Re: How good is the Dark Sword?
Whats the relationship between AR and criticals?
ie, I have an Estoc +14, and a Chaos Estoc +4, with hornets the Backstab numbers on a Black knight (Kiln) were:
-921 (Normal)
-986 (Chaos)
my stats were 40 dex and about 22 str, the normals AR total was ~328, while the Chaos AR with 10H was ~407
not that big of a difference in a crit though, any definite answer someone can supply?
sorry for OT

Re: How good is the Dark Sword?
We don't have the definite answer yet, but you can see that the final damage numbers were a lot closer than the initial AR numbers. It's a bit surprising that the chaos outdamages the normal, despite your 40 Dex, though, since BKs are strong vs fire...
My experience: I used to have a Lightning Kinife +5 for all my critical needs. Then I got 40 Dex, and was so fed up with the lightning effect that I decided to revert it then upgrade it to Regular +15. Lo and behold, the AR is lower, but its damage was higher--I was so happy! No more lightning, just a pure regular blade doing more damage than the elemental one--and BKs aren't very strong against lightning, which makes it an even better case for Regular vs Elemental.

I should test my Estocs on the Hollows in firelink.

Try the ones in New Londo. They've got the least armor in the game, I think, should make the most neutral subjects.

Re: How good is the Dark Sword?
It's pretty cool, wish it had more Ar or less weight though. More Ar would be preferable since the thing is huge! Sucks that I can get backstabed during the R2 though.
Do we have any anti necromancy rules? lol

Re: How good is the Dark Sword?
I love it. It looks awesome, and the damage can be pretty nifty at times. I find the r2 to be good in a combo, should the person be a noob. lol
It's my favorite weapon in the game, right ahead of the great axe.
