    Types of players

Post by bloodpixel on Sun May 13, 2012 12:58 am

    1. The overly defensive
People who almost never drop their guard. They are always blocking and will never try to get the first hit. Often they attempt to counter your attacks. These are usually people who are new to PvP. This is most likely the most rare type of people you will fight against, unless you're a griefing bastard.

    Strategies
Use magic to chip away at their health. If you have none or they have the sense to dodge, attempt to use the various forms of BS. If that doesn't work, then try to break their guard. Bleed weapons are also very effective as they can slip past guard.

    2. The defensive
People who, unsurprisingly, are defensive. They will often use a shield and roll a lot. If they have a poke weapon, expect them to hide behind the shield while poking. If they don't, the will usually have a fast weapon that recovers quickly. They won't usually charge at you, but wait for you to attack first. A common type of player.

    Strategies
A person who uses this can be a very annoying to fight against if they have some kind spear or rapier. If you have enough poise, you can go through their spear/rapier pokes and BS them. This tactic will only work if you are close enough and they poke two times or more. Alternatively, you can try to roll bs punish. Having WoG is useful in this situation, but many times they will be able to dodge your magic. Overall, playing against these types will take patience.

    3.The Roller
These people use rolling attacks very often. These types of people will always have a ninja flip ring or fast roll. The Roller has a wide variety of weapons, from Rapiers to Great Hammers. They will usually 2-hand their weapons.

    Strategies
Possibly the simplest to deal with, these types of people are very predictable. You can easily parry them. If you are not good at parrying, time your attacks so that they will hit the opponent during his recovery animation of he roll.

    4. The Pivot BS dude
For a lack of a better name, I'll call them that. So anyway, these people will try to get a pivot bs (no ****...). They are generally recognizable when they use a high BS damage weapon (i.e rapier, lighting Zweihander) and if they appear to not be locking on and is charging at you.
    Strategies
Move back and try to move the opposite direction of where they will try to hit. Try not to use slower moving attacks since they can run behind you. Try to keep your distance and whittle down their health.

    5.The Parrier(?)
Several variants of this. There is a guide on YouTube explaining these types but I'll break it down for you here.
    1. The first types is when your opponent blocks your first hit, and parries either your second or third hit. They use this tactic against slower weapons
    2. The second is when they have a lot of poise and they spam parry. This is usually against lighter weapons.
3.The third, and the most advanced, is blind parrying. These people will try to parry your first strike.

    Strategies
    1. Simply put, you just never swing that second hit when they block. Adjust to their play style (defensive, or something else) and use those tactics to beat them.
    2. Try to BS them when they are in the parrying animation. Haven't seen this type often so I don't know what else to say.
    3. Basically, to fight them, you need to be unpredictable. Throw a couple empty attacks, extra rolls before attack; don't repeat attack patterns. If you have a weapon that can dead-angle, do that. If you're using a long weapon, attack them from the edge of your range, where it's harder to parry from. What you can also do is punish parry-spamming. In the same way you have to avoid being predictable in your attacks, they can be predictable in their parries. So have some non-parriable attacks handy for that (whips, spells, etc). Punish them a few times and they might be dissuaded from parrying so much.
    -BLA1NE

    6. The Spell spammer
People who spam magic over and over. Often times they have no plan except pray that it hits you. They will often try to keep their distance unless using a close range spell.

    Strategies
Rolling, rolling, rolling. Rolling is very important. Magic, particularly crystal soul spears, can do massive damage. Many shields suck at blocking magic so you will receive massive chip damage if you block. The best thing to do is to roll in and deal the pain.

    7. The Dead Angler
People who dead angle. If you do not know what dead angling is, it is a person who hits behind(clarification needed) them. This will not allow you to block or parry. To know more about dead angling, just youtube it. Often times, they will use weapons will large sweep attacks as those are the best at dead angling. They will also usually have lock-on off.
    Strategies
I don't know. I haven't fought enough to make a good strategy. Again, going to need you guys to fill in the gap.

    8. Poise stunlockers
People that wear full havels or full giants and just go for the stunlock. They don't even roll or defend. Most of them are hosts with buddies or the phantoms.
    -Carphil

    Strategies
Generally, alone they are not a threat. Any nimble character can slip past their slow attacks. However, if they Ninja Flip, it can become a problem. If you do not have the poise and defense, trading blows will never work in your favor. They prefer large melee weapons. Use the various strategies and your own knowledge to defeat them.
The ones with phantoms, however, are a different story. They generally are slow and unskilled. However, they have the advantage in numbers. They can easily just BS you if you're not paying attention. They only thing I can say is to backstab a lot.

    9. The Assassin
The assassin is generally found in the forest. Using spells like Chameleon, they usually screw around with their enemy. They will either just hide to mess with you, or pop out when you least expect it.

    Strategy
The only thing I can say is that you need to be able to recognize a fake bush or whatever, and you're pretty good to go.

    10. The berserker (Forum Pirate)
Usually using faster weapons such as buffed katanas or claymores and often layering stamina regen gear, they spam r1 like nobodies buisness and never back off long enough for you to regenerate any yourself.

    Strategies
To fight them, counter their often predictable attack patterns with pokes or parries, kick to screw with their flow, and count their swings. If you catch one low on stamina, they're in serious trouble but be sure to watch for the gc/wog/hcsm often used to buy time for their stamina regen.

That's all for right now. Gonna add stuff later.

If you attend FC, you'll get plenty of practice against parriers!

Also, a good strategy against defensive enemies, is status ailments. Some people will freak out when they get poisoned (even though it's so weak!). Others won't even freak out if you build their bleed meter... but bleeding them through their guard is a very effective way of killing these players.

Put me in the Roller category. Fits me really well sad

Edit: Here's a few more categories from my PVP experience:

Poise stunlockers: People that wear full havels or full giants and just go for the stunlock. They don't even roll or defend. Most of them are hosts with buddies or the phantoms.

Magician sniper: they try to keep a long distance a cast a variety of magics on you (soul arrow, soul spear, homing soulmass). They will only roll and run away to recover distance if you get close. Good moment to put a crossbow or bow in action.

WoG spammer: People who have patience enough to complete several playthroughs in order to get a lot of Wrath of the Gods miracle. They will have a shield in left hand, a talisman in right hand, crown of dusk, ring of first sunborn. Great magic barrier works well here, and so the crest shield.

    The Pyro.
    -uses pyromnacy as primary weapon

    The Combustioner
-spams combustion as primary weapon, similar to the roller or defensive

    The Mid-Range Mage
-spams the MLGS special and use magic like homing soul mass

    The Spellcaster
    -uses soceries and magic weapons

    The Jedi
-uses faith spells like force and WOG with lightning spells

    The Assassin
-uses chameleon and BSs when least expected, often recognizable by shadow armor

    The Dragon
-spams dragon weapon specials as primary offensive means

    Does this help?

    What about Runners-

Runners tend to use the charging attacks to catch people in preparation for other combos. They tend to use larger weapons especially greatswords for the spinning charge attack which can stagger the opponent while the user recovers from the initial charge. Chargers tend to keep thier distance moving in when they feel they might be able to get off a successful attack before pulling away again.

Strategies- Try to avoid the initial charge by rolling or guarding against it. The charge would leave themselves very vulnerable after such attacks allowing for the "victim" of the charger to move around and get a successful backstab.

    This verymuch sums me up.

What about the R1 spammer? Using BKGA or Zweis, they swing the weapon unskillfully(?) in an attempt to catch you with a BS when you roll.

Can this be considered a 'Lagstaber'?

    The Buffer
-uses resin, SLB, DMB, CMW, or Power Withen to increase their attack power, often uses fast dexterity weapons

    The Ambusher
-will annoyingly ambush the player at a vantage point for them to kill the player in such a way that does nothing but piss people off, common weapon among them is the Dragonslayer Greatbow

    Robin Hood
-uses bows and crossbows to slowly whittle down health

    The Infecter
-uses poison mist, toxic mist, and acid surge to infect the player and win
    -uses

    The Strategist
    ---------------
These players aren't particularly common, however they begin a bit defensive and just roll dodge your attacks to see how you play - after about 30 seconds they have worked out your patterns and begin going on the offensive - this is effective but easily countered.

    Tactics
    -------------
    Play extremely unpredictably

    The Unsuspecting Glass Cannon
Many players actually have the potential to be glass cannons - however these people dont start off as a glass cannon - they will switch to their RTSr when they hit low life - they usually use fast weapons eg Rapiers or BSS - and the wild dash attack from here - due to the fact it will hit about 950 damage.

    Strategy
The key point here is to never give them the chance to swap the ring - you must <-- Key word here "Must" stay on the offensive - make them worry and they bubble into crap silly
