Are you sure it's physical damage that's getting through? Magic weapons do chip damage through pretty much all shields.

Like I said, it sounds like chip damage from a magic weapon, but since that isn't it I have no idea.

Didn't look like velka's. Maybe it was an enchanted one, do they look the same as standard ones?

They all look the same when upgraded to elemental. Also to boot elemental damage does not have a unique noise/effect like lightning weapons do. It was most likely some sort of magic elemental upgrade of a rapier.
As Reaper said, it would be either magic, enchanted, divine or occult.

I can think of 2 possibilities:
- It's an upgrade path that adds magic damage (magic/ enchanted, divine/ occult)
- He's doing the up-R1 (kick) attack. Rapiers replace the kick with a back-stepping attack that does a bit of damage through shields.

Didn't know that attack did damage through shields. That could have been it. I didn't have a recurrence against other weapons I don't think.
