Robe of the Great Lord and Primordial Serpents

Post by Darkwolf on Thu May 10, 2012 12:51 pm

Hello. I've lurked on these forums for a long time and I must say the work everyone does on the Lore is amazing.

What is on the chest of Gwyn's Robe of the Great Lord armor? If you look at the picture on his Boss page taken from the prologue, it almost looks like a primordial serpent. That would be a potentially very interesting reason behind why the Lords decided to challenge the dragons. Were their strings being pulled the same way the player character is by Frampt/Kaathe?

It would then seem to tie-in with the Old Testament story of the Serpent, Adam and Eve, and eating the fruit from the Tree Of Knowledge. The Serpent deceives Eve into eating the fruit and giving some to Adam despite God strictly forbidding them to do so. They eat it, gain knowledge, realize their naked, etc. This eventually leads to God expelling them from the Garden of Eden and punishing the Serpent to forever crawl on its belly. So it appears the role of the serpent as a trickster was used by From in their lore, since a lot of elements within the game are borrowed from religious traditions and legends from around the world.

Assuming the serpents manipulated the Lords to wage war on the dragons, (especially since, if one uses the Everlasting Dragon as a representative of the dragons as a peaceful race due to the fact you can cut off its tail and attack it and it doesn't care or kick you out of convenant) what is the agenda for the serpents? What did they stand to gain from all this? At first, it would seem they are only around to lead others to misery with their stories and generally be evil. But the Dark Lord ending shows them as being subservient. What is their true role?

It seems to have more than one eyes, and seems to have four, two on each side... similar to certain chaos demons.

Still trying to understand what it is, although it seems a little off to be a primordial serpent.

i think they challenged the dragons because they wanted to prevail over them.
but they could have been scared so the pygmy instructed his primordial serpents to "help" them! silly
because he wasnt powerful enough to destroy the dragons so he used the power of the lords... he knew that they would become weak over time!!

about the thing in his robe i havent seen it yet :|

If we are going to talk Adam and Eve and Eden here then actually just the first flame coming about and creating disparity, along with "light and dark" is a similar idea to the fruit of knowledge.

Then the destruction of the dragons is parallel to their expulsion from Eden. It's the spurning of neutrality in favor of knowledge.

The CGSR states that the serpent is an incomplete dragon and representation of undead, as opposed to Dragons, which embody true immortality.

The fact that Frampt is "Kingseeker" suggests that he and he alone of the serpents support Gwyn and the gods- Kaathe and the rest of the serpents who bow if the PC decides to become the Dark Lord are on the side of undeath; undeath being the means to manipulate the Darkwraith's coveted Humanity.

I am certain that Frampt at least urged Gwyn to fight the Dragons, but to do so, they needed the Lord Souls in the First Flame, apparently deep underground. It's almost certainly Frampt
who allowed Gwyn and the other Lords find it, but Kaathe who gave humanity the chance to seize power by taking the Pygmy to find the Dark Soul.
