    Reforming the Dark Souls Douchebags

Post by SATLOS on Fri May 04, 2012 4:44 pm

Just wondering... Have any of you guys ever tried reforming/reasoning with random invaders who only use exploits?

I know everyone's had their PvP rant about farmers/gankers/family maskers, etc. etc., but has anyone ever attempted to show these players why they're a scourge upon the Dark Souls community?

I was recently hanging out human in the Moonlight Forest trying to summon a co-worker for some weapon swapping when I got invaded. Guy came at me with Lightning Claymore +5 and PW and just poise BSed my 20 VIT character while I was establishing my halberd range...

He PSNs me the usual "noob" business and I tried to point out that his playstyle was so cowardly that if anyone was the noob, it was him. His next few messages were the stuff of the lowest common social denominator, so I ignored him after that...

Just made me kinda wonder... Has anyone ever tried reasoning with these neanderthals?

I once message to a guy who pointed down at me after a fight that I lost. I said that he didn't had to taunt me, that he won fair and square and should bow next time. He messaged saying sorry and that I was right.

I honestly haven't tried. I actually believe they're free to play the way they want although I admit they can be aggravating. But then I remember that I used to have to hold the light gun next to the screen to get those darn ducks and figure maybe they're at that stage in their video game development.

I always saw it more as taking the easy way out approach. Like, they don't wanna do any work at all so they use the easiest ways to win fights.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but honestly if that IS what they're going for they should just go back to the shooters that hold your hand through the story mode and who's main focus is multiplayer.

AWESOME effing reference, my man. And a solid observation.

I'm guilty of message spamming just because I have a USB keyboard for the PS3. It only takes a few seconds to type it up and send, so I message with probably abnormal frequency. Surprisingly, a lot of them just plain didn't know some of that stuff is frowned upon, and when I invade again they're not doing it anymore.

That's good to hear... At least some people listen/learn.

Maybe it was the fact that I totally nailed the kid as per his build/tactics... I was polite about it, but I'm pretty sure I called it 99% correctly, which might have shamed/pissed him off/something.

Yes, I've tried to reform them quite a bit, but eventually I just gave up as you may know. I've gotten a few to be a bit more kind to others, but most just send hatemail and I end up making them look foolish by sending something silly back to them.

I'd say it's a futile effort to try and fix the community of the game, it's better to just talk with people on this forum.

That sounds reasonable. Then again, some people just don't like confrontation, polite or otherwise.

I am a forest hunter, and I always make it a point of bowing to anyone that I invade in the Forest. You guys would be suprised at the number of times they will bow back. Then, they will send me messages like "sorry" or "good game." In fact, sometimes they will even fight one on one, though this dosen't occur that often. So, it's really not that hard to just be nice to people, because you would be suprised at who is nice back.

Last night I ran into this dude who was essentially a douche, but I had a blast playing against him because instead of getting annoyed at the Point Down after his second win, I just went with it and had fun. We probably fought fifteen times, he won some, I won some, but before every fight we'd spam taunts for at least a minute, like we're exchanging insults or something. Then we'd send a snide message here and there between fights. Basically trash talking, but in a semi-serious way. At the end of the night I sent him a message saying, "You know, I thoroughly hate your guts, but man you're a blast to play against." He says "likewise, chump" and we're now PSN frenemies.

Other night i was invadeing and got ambused by 2 red phantoms and the host.

Shortly after i invade agian i see thr two reds dueling in the distance thrn they heal up rush me and gank.

I message host saying i am aware thry are dueling and i wont attack till they are finished, mention how i do the same in Sens.

Invade agian.. see them fighting... this time they dont rush me, no gank they keep dueling, then boom, host backstabs me hornet ring BK great axe (snuck behind me with ring of fog and ring that makes no noise ) they all rush over spam emotes of shrug and down points. Host tells me to stop being bad.

I then came to the conclusion the reason they are ganking with red phantoms is because they dont want to get more then one invader at a time (forest)

Good way to upset hackers/trolls/gankers/noobs. Send a sarcastic message afterward, like one guy on xbox was hacking (my whole friendlist reported him), and I said "OMG your so good, how did you become invincible like that". Either they will think your serious, and then just lead them to believe they are good, building info to destroy them with (and to use for a report). If they see through it, the usual response comes next "Lolyumad". In this case, state it simple, your not mad, your sad. I told him I was sad that there were people that were just that pathetic to hack a video game so he could play better than everyone else. He told me he didn't think he was better, but he sounded offended that I called him pathetic. It has worked about 4 or 5 times now.

However, if they are respectful, I send help. I was bowed by a couple forest gankers before, and when they both came after me (I put up one hell of a fight and almost won), I sent them both a message, telling them to send one at a time, make it a challenge tower to fight the host, that way the other person who invades has no reason to feel jipped. They told me thank you and did as such. Felt great to have that happen.

yea i have to admit there were a few times where i raged and messaged someone and a few times the person actually ended up making me feel like the ****. thankfully some were cool and i ended up having friendly duels ext. gotta remember areas like dark anor and forest are anything goes(i play the same in those areas) so i cant really get mad at people for doing the same.

i have messaged some people with 12 casts of wrath who did nothing but use wrath and great combustion ext. and they always seemed to lag(they were hosts) and they messaged me back stuff like "you gunna cry about it" ext so i realized not to reply/message those people because they bust a nutt when you do.

I had a guy flask like 3 times in an invasion, he finally got me, despite not popping humanity or healing, and did the well what is it... So I went back in, and killed him, and I did the channeler dance till it broke..

    That's how you taunt.

When I was starting out I used Lightning weapons and the Ninja Flip ring. After a brief stint in the forest i got a message from this guy I beat telling me not to be a tool.

Initially I was kinda angry because I wasnt sure what he meant so I asked him what he meant and he just explained the whole Lightning DWGR arguement to me.

I told him that I was new and would try not to use it in future if people thought that about it.

Later I was GL at a low level in the Burg and got a Lightning Weapon PW Giants fellow suffice to say he intially was owning me till I got off a few of those ever annoying chains of the BS nature (I am ashamed at my proficiency in the Chain BS) and killed him.

SO.... I send him a message telling him that even if he didnt weak the typical tool of a Griefer Armour (Giants and MOM (in the Parish/Burg for gods sake)) he could still troll as many people as possible while freeing up slots for better rings (why I said this I dont know).

I get a message back calling me a Griefer even though i one used a Base Scimitar (Wanderer class) to kill him. SO I respond with something along the lines of

"Lightning Giants MOM Griefer says what?".

In the end the guy felt that he had to BB in really over powered weapons to use of newbies because otherwise he couldnt win..... He also was just a jerk and wanted to make others squirm so I killed him thrice more before he raged quitted with a big long rant of a message about how I must be cheating in order to 1.) Chain BS him in the first match 2.) Kick him off the stairs outside the Burg Bonfire 3.) Use the Double R2 of the Scimitar to get in my killing blows before his claymore could swing , and 4.) That I used Firebombs to kill him while he used Humanity.

Another time I told a Grifer that I wanted to get inside the head of one and find out why the did it.

He told me to "F^%& off".

    I thought "MISSION COMLETE!"

    WOW I was shocked too.

Today I fought some guy who use a frigging legendary distance walk of peace with a frigging long talisman and then sucked all of my humanity (15). I messaged him (not knowing he was japanese) I was outraged but I maintained my cool while writing to him. I told him he was a coward and a bad player, but it really didn't matter cuz the game would take vengeance for me and soon he'll loose everything.... to my surprise he replied.... and he was japanese T.T I encountered 2 japanese cheaters today....

I had many opponents without any code of conduct - hiding behind NPC, BS while fighting with others, attacking when I was bowing, TWOP+Dark Hand and whatnot. But I think to myself that these players have mental problems and let them be. Thinking about the boredom they must go through. Only Wretches deny thrill of a fair fight!

I let the emotions do all the communication for me.
If i get invaded or invade and the fight starts with a bow & no rushing during buffing i consider it a fair duel so no cheap bull.

If i win and the fight ends the way it began i bow, if there was some foul play i taunt.
I did try to reason with some guys way back when i played on 360...never again.

Farmers, exploiters, cheapskates will remain the way they are and I'm certainly not wasting any more time typing.

    Actually, once.
Did you know about 75% of lightning Zweihander users I fight in Anor Londo -really don't know any other tactic-? A large majority of that 75% was willing to learn when I tried chatting with them, and while most of them still do it, quite a few of them are willing to try new things versus me. They are just trying to have fun, and they are legitimately not skilled enough to have fun any other way. It's sad really.

the other day I got demolished by tons of gankers and chumps who were buying time for friends to appear so after me dying like 20 times I gave up and went straight Bull on everyone I used the dark moon blade and immidiatley when after anyone I invaded if my DMB wore off I switched to my occult Zwei and ripped them all new ones.

I wasnt totally evil cause if their wasnt 2 guys going after me at the same time I gave them some time to bow or buff and if they didnt do either i killed them.

Rynn, good points. I try to use my own experience to understand these guys and I know that there can be real anxiety to get out of that comfort zone. For instance, I used archery for the armored boar in the Burg on NG. The two in the Archives......well that doesn't work so well so I was forced to melee them. I had real anxiety because I didn't know what to expect from their attacks, having avoided it the first time. The same goes with trying a new weapon. I took a night of PvP to learn how to use Priscilla's dagger and my heart was thumping pretty good most of the night because I had stored my scythe, leaving me with no crutch. However, there are still a good number of people looking to cause grief and be jerks. Anyone who gangs up then taunts immediately loses the empathy.

Personally, while in the forest I will give a bow before (and after, should I emerge victorious) a battle. But if i'm invading as a Dark wraith and the person tries to bow, I run up and give them a friendly little kick and step back.

I just find that the Honor system against people waiting to try and stunlock you with heavy weapons is completely invalid. Granted I do try to follow the basic rules of a duel, but to me there is no Honor in a Dark Wraith invasion.

EDIT: I realized that sounds a bit harsh, but I am only talking about the Bow before and after battle. I apologize if it came off to a bit strong, I don't tend to post on forums much but I decided to sign up just for my favorite game tongue
