i know you've seen the books that are entitled "...for Dummies." Like "Algebra for Dummies" or "English for Dummies" Well, i'm wondering if there is a one stop shop comprehensive guide that works much the same way, like a "Dark Souls for Dummies"

I mean I've played around 80 hours of game time across 3 players and some other test dummies that i deleted. Yet my highest SL is 65 so i havent explored much of the game yet. The guides i've read so far in the wiki have a lot of presupposed knowledge in them and i just can't seem to grasp the direction i want to take with my characters build or in what manner i should up grade weapons.

I'm not that savvy when it comes to building an elite character in hardcore RPGs. So can anyone provide links that would be building a foundation of must needed knowledge and then links that build upon those into move advance ones. thx

Stop cheating and play properly (without a guide and without looking things up) until after your first playthrough or you'll miss the whole point of the game and shouldn't have bothered to play at all. I know its difficult and confusing but thats how its supposed to be.

Once you've done that I'll happily tell you whatever you want to know.

Hey! When I create my builds I do it for a reason, for PVP or just for fun. I would recommend a pure dex build as it was one of my fave builds big grin

Yeah, don't worry about your stats too much. Just take one guy and change stats to experiment with whatever weapons you pick up along the way.

My first guy rose to SL205 and was on round 5 before I started a second guy. That's when I decided what soul level I wanted my guy to top out at and what stats he should have for the weapons he could wield.

My SL10 guy is a better fighter than my SL25 guy because his armor and weapons are better.

Explore. Grab everything. Try different weapons. Be careful using your slabs because they're hard to replace.

Its not cheating..... I looked up a lot of things on my first run, and still fully understood the game. He doesn't have to be like all of these Archive junkies and know every single reason why things happen in the game. Most people don't even fully understand the game until their second or third round anyway. So if it was up to me, you should look up whatever you want, and then on your next round, play it without anything. Some people think this takes the surprise out of it, but I have beaten the game like 10 times now and still find something new each time. So to sum it all up.... do whatever you want with the game, make it fun in your own way, you dont have to be like everyone else just to play the game.

I play like Forum Pirate, but I think he just wrote it too bluntly...I would say to tough it out and explore on yourself, you need the surprise aspect of this game and finding things yourself and also this is what will help you practice your skills, trying again and again.

I am sure all of us have browsed the wiki or seen a video in a moment of desperation, I think what Forum Pirate means is not to go to far and have everything read and given to you like a walkthrough.

Despite my previous advice, you defidently shouldn't look up every single thing, but its ok to look up some things, because I can guarentee you, everybody on this site has looked up something in some way, shape, or form.

I wrote this specifically for people like you:

    http://darksoulswiki.wikispaces.com/Character+Building+for+Dummies

It does suppose a bit of previous knowledge--but only so far as you know yourself. I wrote that you should finish the game a few times, and try everything you get your hands on to know what you like and what you don't, so you know what you want your build to use. Other than that, I kept it basic.

I had to use a the wiki just to figure out which way to head to, other than that I ignored it. God knows how many times I got killed because I took a wrong turn or forgot there was a knight on the otherside of a door. In anycase, this game does benefit from the exploration and coming to an understanding of it from your own experience but sometimes your gonna need someone to tell ya were it's best to head too from time to time. Just don't do it so frequently that you rely on it all the time.

My first build was DEX oriented, I feel like fast weapons are a good way for beginners to have success in DkS.

I would say just try to play through the entire game. My first few characters were te sux and I got stuck on Quelaag both times. If you're got a friend in real life that has darksouls on the same console, play with him! Two minds are better than one, and co-oping with a buddy right next to you is FUUUUUUUN. You should be able to simply figure it out with time and wandering though the gloomy game with a spring in your step!

And PS, you don't have to look at the wiki to know where to go to next. Pay attention to the items and keys you get because that will lead you to your next area. I COMPLETELY skipped over the depths on my first two characters because after killing Capra, I didn't see any pathway, and I didn't even read the key I got. I didn't even KNOW I got a key. If you read the descriptions of the keys you find, then you should know where to go next to use the keys. XD

While I agree with the general sense of the answers that have been given to you so far, I must say I disagree a bit.
There are a few things that are a bit too obscure for someone to figure out and can lead to frustration.

For example, the fact that slabs are few and unique per playthrough. Or how some of your trainers can dissapear (Rhea and Laurentius) etc.

Haha! Yeah, my first few tries had the masterkey, then I tried the other items, and that's when I actually started paying attention to the keys, and that's when I started going to the right places because I'd not only pay attention to the keys you get that open up normal doors, but I finally started noticing the keys I got that couldn't be opened by the masterkey, like the Key to the Depths.

I think people should keep with the cryptic hints the game tends to give. It would make the journey of a newbie even more mysterious.

"So, how do I get the Drake Sword?"
    "Maim the Drake's body"

    "Where is the Lordvessel?"
"In the Golden City of Anor Londo, behind the walls of the Palace, in the Chamber of the Princess, guarded by the biggest bastards this side of the Capra Demon."

In terms of a guide, this is the closest thing I can think of. It's obviously still alot of reading if you want to get every bit of it, but all the info is there and easily sorted into specific topics for whatever questions may arise happy

Not everyone has enough time on hand to build several Characters and try things out!

Everyone must play the game as it suits him best! Some players want to explore everything on their own while others consider to make the life easier when playing with a guide on hand… Cheating is a whole different story!

Why are there guides or Statistic tables for everything ? -> is it probably for doing a gamer’s life easier? Think about it!

Following is my experience with Dark Souls:

I searched help in Dark Souls Wikipedia during my first play through! I also learnt from Youtube or from being a Phantom how to battle Bosses! I like to coop and used White Soap Stone a lot.
Dark Souls is really a mistery of a game! Important things do not have in game description. So instead of finding out every little aspect on his own, I would rather contact Wiki and save a lot of time! (Time; My preciouuuusssssssssss!)

When I am playing a whole new game I am starting without looking in any Guide and enjoy the new world to its fullest! When I am eventually stucked with an enemy or location and nothing seems to work I will look it up in I-Net.

Then sometime I want to know which is the best weapon or the best armor for me. Because I don’t want to waste my preciousssssssss Items and Souls in upgrading a weapon only to find out its bad!!!

Dark Souls has enough potential for keeping one playing for hundreds of hours! That's why I agree to try out everything. (Aaaaaand: think about potential of Bottomless Box Glitch...)

I would tag along those telling you not to use guides that much happy
In my first playthrough I checked weapon stats and such, and I found out about the Drake Sword through youtube.
I may have looked up one more thing or two, but didnt want to use it frequently, glad I didnt.

I heard about the drake sword before the game even came out haha!

"I heard that you can get an awesome weapon by hitting a dragon's tail over and over again with a bow and arrow from far away!" Yep. Before the game came out haha!

I like the fact that I started out with no wiki, because I started at release. I tried to look up the halberd when I found it... All I got was a picture of its icon haha! I guess it's fine to look up things as you experience them, but I wouldn't advise to watch a playthrough before playing the game.
