Re: Are you religious?
Mr Digital, it may seem a bit arrogant but I personally do not find it hard to imagine that a mind just stops existing. Because I simply think "and what was before I existed? Well, obviously, I wasn't existing...". Your mind came out of nothing, why can't you go into nothing also then?
But I gotta go off now, sorry I can't further discuss right now

Re: Are you religious?
I may as well leave a reply for you Darkson. Admittedly it is not to hard to consider instant non-existance, though imagining what it would be like to not exist is impossible in my opinion, as you must have a mind to imagine something. I may have came out of nothing, but what if this is the eggshell concept and I have just forgotten billions of pasts?
I could accept total nothingness after death, but why would you choose to? To accept you will become nothing, and will leave nothing behind (Unless you become world famous) is a pretty pessimistic view on life. I would rather believe that after death, I will either be reborn as someone else, or I will live in a world where everything I want can and will happen. Hell, maybe this is actually an afterlife I'm in now, and everything I do is actually just trivial matters formulated by my brain, running on miniscule amounts of energy. Maybe when I die here my "real" brain dies. Maybe this is inception
On a less philosophical note, believe what you want. Just think though, don't you want the best option after death to be true? If you believe in it, and it happens, then you have lived your life without fear and regret. If it doesn't, what did it cost you? My bet is next to nothing, as after all it is only a belief you can stand by until death. It won't change your life in any way.

Better than Bible bashers that make people with faith look bad.

Re: Are you religious?
Hey there people, I thought I might try to revive this old thread. It was pretty great and contained people managing this subject without getting hyper angry with each other or being offensive. I was hoping we could perhaps manage that again, since sometimes people do wish to be open about such parts of their identity and fear to do so. I know I do.

Re: Are you religious?
I'm a sorta strange one. I would consider myself a christian, but I have no denomination as having the terms of what is seen as a 'personal' belief and relationship dictated to me is simply paradoxical.
My beliefs about christianity are similar to many of the central doctrines in the more liberal churches and C of E, but are slightly different as many no longer really apply to modern life. Arguably even some of the commandments aren't really relevant under the right circumstance or generally in modern times.

Re: Are you religious?
I'm of the same view Blood, death scares the piss out of me. I still however do not believe in an afterlife. As comforting as it would be for me, belief is what I actually believe. Not what I wish to believe.
It sounds like you could just call yourself a Secular Christian.

Re: Are you religious?
nah, the word secular implies a lack of spirituality or alignment with faith which isn't really what i believe.
I suppose modern christian is all i could accept, but i think just being christian is fine, all i think you need to be that is faith in the christian thought of god, no matter your other beliefs

Re: Are you religious?
Secular has a good amount of meanings to it, one is that the person is not bound to any order, a church. Meaning they are religious but just do not recognize any groups as following the same beliefs as them.

Re: Are you religious?
Is that so? makes your idea more interesting, though i'd say again the core beliefs are what really matter. I suppose I could just say I'm a little picky on the details, the message is the same no matter which denomination for the most part

Well just saying you are a Christian is fine enough, and if anyone asks for a sect say you don't have one.

Yeah, thats pretty much how I roll right now haha, though noone really cares too much about denomination these days, it's pretty much seen by most people as you're either Catholic or everybody else

It's interesting to consider that some day in the future, Catholicism may have a wide variety of sects within itself.

Re: Are you religious?
I'm more the earth-to-earth type.
After all,do we have concrete proofs that the Bible is true?Isnt religion based on "believing"?
The term "concrete" might be vague and discussing about proves only lead to division and rage.
So let's admit religion is about faith on something not certain.
I admit that believing that good will happen to the benevolent is a "good" way to keep humanity and the morale.
Yet I believe, yep believe, that religions have good sides and bad sides even though I consider religions as "b*llsh*t".
+Humanity
+Happier(Probably?I'm not a believer but my american-branch family is and they're happy so...)
Well I guess faith helps a lot before die-ing.
-Extremism
From my point of view, Extremism>>>>>>>All the good sides,it makes believers the perfect sinners and oh so devil. It makes wars,jealousy,greed...
Just because of extremism,I hate religion when I want to tolerate it.

Re: Are you religious?
But I'd say everything has its extremists, feminism is a noble cause but they have extremists. It is your right of course to dislike people but I just thought I should mention it. Give people a fair chance, there are bad sides to everything. I'm not religious at all, and I still have met extremist atheists.

Re: Are you religious?
Well,I don't hate the believers because they believe.
After all, they're free to believe don't they?Well as long as there aren't any unhumane things going on like sacrifice(sects for Exemple).
You're free to believe that Solaire is the First Born for Exemple. (maybe he is,maybe not...)
I hate the ones who encourage hatred toward other people&religion.
I also hate the perverted stupid idea behind this hatred on other people because of not being of the same ethic/origins/religions.
And this may apply to everything of course as I think extremism comes mostly from Hatred/Fear or not understanding.
For exemple, let's say that people A who eats only cookie discover a new island.
In this island, people B are different, same species(in both definitions meaning looking alike and being able to make fertile child with people A),but eats bananas only instead.
Someone from people A may think "Why do they eat banana? Its ridiculous." and may think "We're doing the right thing, eating cookies,so we're superior to banana's eaters".
The same may happen within people B.
In reality,it might be similar to colonization of the U.S.A or of Africa.
Just to say that this may lead to extremism.
Please say if I'm saying nonsense 'cuz I'm tired and I probably am rambling nonsense :p

Re: Are you religious?
I suppose I'm kind of agnostic. My math teacher put it pretty well one time, I believe in some sort of God just in case. I don't really like any organized religion, especially Catholicism (and I am Catholic), because it all feels too much like some cult blindly following books that were written thousands of years ago and are very likely not true. Another thing my friend said which I kind of like is "I believe in a god, but I don't believe in Jesus."

Re: Are you religious?
Hmm, interesting thread we have here.
I guess I'll throw in my two cents. I am a Christian, but a very unorthodox and not very devout one. I have the belief that as long as I believe in God and the salvation through Jesus, and be a good person, love everyone for who they are and not what they believe, then I am doing what is right. As for the Bible, I don't really enjoy reading it, and it fills me with more questions than it gives me answers, meaning there are details in it I think the writers may have....embellished a bit.
I like to keep my mind open about where I came from though, but I can't bring myself to agree with evolution (it again, just raises more questions than it answers.)
So, that's my belief system in a nutshell. Feels good to talk about it.

Or like Voltaire said in French,"I believe all the mechanisms of this clock(Universe) are so well made that it can't be human-made".
Well with the theory of parallel universes who redo themselves until one is stable with stable physical laws,it's not viable anymore.
Anyway,I've wanted to say that your opinion is respectable and I agree about the organized religion.

Re: Are you religious?
Elite Knight something to consider, believing in a theistic explanation of origin based off of what is known in the realm of science is fine, but try not to call it Intelligent Design. Intelligent Design was proposed as a scientific theory and was thus proven to be incorrect. Your beliefs can be based off of science but I wouldn't advise putting it underneath its definitions.
So just say something like theistic origin, etc.

Re: Are you religious?
Being typically British I'm naturally an atheist, religion, especially Christianity is in terminal decline here. It's interesting to see all these religious debates and issues in other countries though, being an historian I always find other cultures and beliefs fascinating.
