    The Shortcut Door to O & S

Post by callipygias on Tue Apr 24, 2012 12:15 am

Somewhere around my 5th playthrough or so I remember leaving the 3rd Anor Londo bonfire and finding the shortcut door already open. After many many many more rounds I decided I'd imagined it, or I'd come there earlier, or something.

Ever since then the door has always been locked, but I always test it. Here I am on playthrough whatever and the door opened. You'll just have to trust that I'm not crazy enough to have already been here this playthrough.

    Anyone else experience this?

When I invade in Anor Londo, I do it in front of the boss door. So if the host is all the way at the bonfire, I go through the shortcut and open it for them.

Maybe I invaded you way back then! (Probably not me... But must have been an invader.)

Edit: Definitely not me if you're on XBL!

Oh, of course! I'm so rarely human I didn't think of that. I did get invaded, he must have opened it and then closed it just to be a general jerk, not knowing that once anyone opens it it's accesible for me.

It was kind of funny. I waited outsided the bonfire for him. Finally I messaged him where to find me. In mid-message I got incinerated by Great Combustion. I couldn't get out of the damned message screen!

lol the jerk closed it behind him! Even better that his jerk move failed.

I've never been caught while messaging... yet. Came close! Was in PW, going to fight Priscilla, when I'd just finished clearing the bridge leading to her and I got invaded. Figured I'd fight him before going to the boss, but didn't want to wait, so I messaged him "Fog Door". Then I realized that could be ambiguous, and was in the process of writing "Boss Fog" when I saw him appear! Good thing he bowed, otherwise I'd probably have been backstabbed while the damn XMB asked me for the fifth time if I wanted to cancel the message (need to exit the message box first, then exit the XMB, to return to the game, and the message cancel wording is ambiguous at a glance).

That would be ambiguous! "Boss Fog sent you a message: Boss Fog"--what is this guy, retarded*?!

*(I hope the word doesn't offend anyone...)

Never had this happen to me but I wish it would. It would save me making a mad dash past those pesky pink pokers, up the roof dodging the ballistic missiles they call arrows and then falling to my death (a lot) thanks to old rabbit ears on the right. I hate that bit.

Fight the snipers by being a sniper. Poison arrows, even with a Short Bow, have a longer range than the snipers on the ledges.

Great idea in principle. I know 'cos I've tried it but I always end up with an arrow to the knee.

Actually had someone invade then open the portcullis under the Hellkite Wyvern, took me several minutes to figure that one out and allowed me to get tasty Sunlight Spear~

I'd be grateful if you could give me a 'heads up' on where to stand.

In the alcove where the two gargoyles were. Get back into the corners as far from them as you can. Their arrows fall short and won't hit you.

Do you mean the area before you jump over that bench to dash up the first buttress?

Something like that, the platform that held the demons and the start of the incline up. Honestly they don't even shoot at me.

The tactic that works for me is the usual straight up melee tactic. Usually, when you get near the one on the right, the left one can't hit you. If you move up about a meter and a half away from the one on the right (before the turn in the walkway) he will switch to melee, if you position yourself in range of his strike (but before the change in direction) he will try to attack you, which means he moves straight forward. However, as there is that change in direction of the walkway, over half his body will be over thin air, causing him to fall to his doom. The same can be done to the one on the left, hug the wall, and roll under the shots and stand above the descending buttress, but to the side. He will move up to melee, find you in range, and move straight towards you with his attack animation, meaning he will run off the cliff.

The only time this doesn't work is: a) they switch to melee, then switch back to the bow (you have to move into them to get them to switch back). b) they walk slowly with their shield up, sometimes they won't attack when in range when they do this, only a problem with the one on the right, the left one will usually attack you and fall.

I try not to open the shortcut door for people, I go up the stairwell, jump the rail, and go down the primary one on the other side.

I've actually assassinated Hosts like that, him and 2 phannys would be on the 2nd Floor and see me taking the stairwell, I'd wave and dodge a couple SAs, then they'd keep heading onward to the roof. I'd jump the rail as soon as they went into the Bedroom, rush in and kill the host who usually is last in line.

^I just like to do something for them in return for making them lose a humanity. I invade for the PvP and for some online interaction (other people are so much more interesting than AI, they never cease to surprise you!), not just to hinder their progress. So when I can do something positive for the host before I kill them, I will. (And there's not much you can do for the host, as an invader. Can't interact with mobs. At least opening shortcuts is something I can do.)
