I can't fight without the lock-on, maybe that's why I suck at 3 vs 1. I don't even pivot BSed someone (I know how to do it, but I never practice it). Guess I'll have learn to fight without the lock-on.

I can't do it either. I try, and it would REALLY benefit my weapon of choice, but I can't.

I remember trying to do this for a very long time in the forest. The only thing it ever got me was dead. really. fast.
I don't seem to have the ability to run and keep my camera on my enemy at the same time, and my aim is junk. The most practice I get without using lock on is wasting my arrows/throwing knifes free aiming at crates and jars when I get really bored. Suffice to say, I'm no Robin Hood.

You can practice it in FC, that's a good place to start. Normally in the forest I use lock on just to quickly position my camera, other wise I'm not using it. Even with crossbows I don't use it, I just do manual aim for harassment.

In starting gear FC, I would have lock on then take the lock off so I could get a dead angle hit while they were blocking. FC is really the best place to practice PVP skills.

I've seen many people using Murakumo without lock on, and the dead angles works pretty good.
As a pyromancy user, I know how to unlock to throw some Great fireballs, but with a melee weapons is dificult. Dark Anor Londo is a great place to practice

I do it with certain scythe attacks and it's pretty effective. But usually I'm a lock on kinda guy

Just accept the fact that at first, it'll probably cost you wins while you're getting used to it. Eventually you'll know in what situations to toggle it on and off. Like the other guys were saying, flip it on to quickly find the baddies or to roll BS punish a little easier. Take it off to dead angle, do 360 dashes, manually aim projectiles, and be less predictable in general. In my experience, it's waaay easier to hit opponents who strafe a lot when you unlock and attack in the direction they're strafing, and it's easier for me to combo without whiffs when I track manually. Hope this helps, man.

Re: Do you ever unlock your opponent?
depends on the weapons. With thrusting weapons such as spears, great hammers and SOME great axes, halberds, and some ultra greatswords I do not lock on at times. However their are times when it is best to lock on to an opponent.

Sometimes. It can be useful against some BS fishers.

I am clicking it off and on constantly during pvp. Depends on what is happening.

Meh....I'd say I am a middle-class PvP player....maybe upper middle-class at best.
I use the Claymore a lot, (sorry ) and it's 2-hand R2 is great for unlocked swings. The R1 2-handed swing is also good to unlock and relock while you are swinging. I feel like unlocking it helps create dead angles....it could all be in my head I guess but that is just how I do it.

Re: Do you ever unlock your opponent?
I unlock when rushing in for a Dead Angle, or when I want to change the direction of a heavy attack.
I also free aim fireballs.

Re: Do you ever unlock your opponent?
I free-aim most spells, and unless I have an opponent attempting to circle me, spears are generally more effective without being locked on, as well as -most- weapons heavy attacks... It's all about what you're doing I guess. For a lot of things, it just seems to get me killed though. One of the reasons I rarely try dead angle. (I use the Shotel nearly religiously for Shields.
