Upgrading a Bow Empty Upgrading a Bow

    Post by JoeBroski09 Mon Apr 16, 2012 2:35 pm

I was thinking about doing a Dex build, since I recently co-oped with this guy who did GREAT damage with this bow of pharis in the demon ruins.
I want to know the following:
Does upgrading the bow to Fire or Magic do ANYTHING? I really have no idea if making the bow a fire bow makes the arrows light on fire? Does making the bow lightning make the arrows do lightning damage?
Another question I was pondering was "Can you use magic weapon on a bow?" Can it be done?

Upgrading a bow to any element won't change the look of the arrows, but will cause it to do the respective damage. Magic, divine, and other scaling upgrades will do as they would with a regular weapon, making the bows damage scale with the equivalent stat, or do the equivalent damage.

I have no idea about the magic weapon on a bow, but I tried to use resins and they didn't work, so I'd presume not.

Thanks a ton! But I just remembered something haha! The scaling disappears as soon as it's upgraded to an elemental. So, making the bow a lightning weapon would, in the end, force it to do less damage if I was a character with 40 dex.

Well if you're going for high dex just upgrade pharis's bow along the regular path, as it gets an S scaling with dexterity at high upgrade levels. My chaos +4 longbow does 400 damage to enemies in the undead burg with wooden arrows, ands decent amounts to further enemies too.

Yeah, always regular path and for PvE Pharis is the way to go. The extra range means you get higher damage from further away. You can get a lot of enemies out of aggro range just with the bow. Feather arrows seem illogical because they do less damage than standards arrows. However, it's surprising how fast the damage decreases with range and again, more range means higher damage from afar. Hawk ring.....ditto. With that setup I can easily kill the Capra (and Taurus) demons outside the Firesage room from about where Kirk spawns. That's a useful ranged application.......I could give you more impressive range feats but not really any more useful than that one.

So damage increases with range? I didn't know that o.O
I'll probably buy 999 of every arrow there is. Because I tend to co-op for hours on end haha!

Sorry, worded wrong in the second sentence. Meant that with the Pharis bow you get higher damage output from great distances because the, let's call it "decay" of damage is countered by a higher range. I wrote it right later. For example.....that Capra demon before the Firesage door. Let's go back to him. With just the pharis bow you can hit him but not hurt him. You'll see the little blood effect. With feather arrows and hawk ring.....boy can you hurt him. Another tip.....poison arrows. Even if the arrow can't damage the target the poison effect goes up still. So if you can't afford feather arrows or can't get them yet and don't have the hawk ring use this tip....

Buy standard arrows (1/10 the cost of poison) and work out your shot until you see the impact. Then switch to poison and fire away until you see damage. That means they're poisoned. I don't recommend the cheapo arrows because the range is less, meaning if you sight in with them accurately the poison won't be accurate.

Wow! Nice! And I'd want to max my dex at 40? I heard that there's almost no reason to get it any higher than that.

really no reason to go higher than 40 dex unless you're doing it for casting speed reduction (with the amount being extremely low between 40 and 45)

really though, dex is the only real offensive stat you don't see above 40 often, int/fai are suggested to both go to 50, str to 50 (somewhat of a misnomer, many big str weapons would require 50 anyways to 1hand it), but dex, 40. end to 40 is a different issue altogether
