Min/Max: Selling Your Soul for +15% HP

I constantly see folks with all the same gear on. Everywhere I invade. You know them. The min/maxers.

This was discussed a bit in the Havel's poll thread. Are you willing to sell out your toon, wear what all the min/maxers are wearing, for a little extra stat-wise? I feel like the tiny bonuses provided from items like Mask of the Mother aren't going to save you from your skill level: adding an extra hit to your HP bar won't save you from 95% of encounters.

So do you do it? Why?

I don't wear it on my current build, but I have an old vit gauged build that uses mask of the mother, among other things. High HP was the entire point of that build. It was booooring as hell to play, but quite effective at SL75.

mask is only useful if you have like 40-50 points in vit, and you sacrifice defense/poise, although as you said you can still get enough poise/defense anyway.

my favorite is childs mask.

I use child's mask for the stamina regen on some characters, but i vary a lot.

Same as Strangejoy, I have a Vit build, and it's the most boring one I've made!

99 Vit, Mask of the Mother, Ring of Favor and Protection. I have 2622 HP, or something like that! I actually have more HP than the health bar shows! I have to take a few hits before the health bar even starts going down. Wields a Lightning Claymore +5... Like I said, it's the most boring build I've made. I used it to invade for about an hour after I finished making it, then never touched it again.

But otherwise, about Min/ Maxing, I'll say what I always say about Darkwraiths:

- We invade up
- We often invade parties

So when you're SL40 invading SL90+ with 2 phantoms, I don't care how good you are, you still definitely need to squeeze every bit you can out of your stats.

Mask of child owns. The green glow it gives is epic. Wear it with paladin armor and silver knight legs and gloves.

My policy has always been looks first, stats next. If you can't enjoy looking at your character then you won't enjoy playing as them, simple as that. I can understand the mentality of the min/maxers (if you could take that theoretical 5% of matches where the Mask of Mother's HP WOULD save you then why wouldn't you), but I think the tradeoff of having a character who wins 5% more but isn't fun to play isn't worth it.

I rock different things all the time, dont really care about stats that much as long as I think I look good. currently wearing solaire helmet, holy robe, giants hands and legs. the only reason i am wearing giants is because the color scheme blends well with holy robe. i also keep my weight at about 40lbs.

Yes I do, and yes Mother's Mask save me a lot of times when my health was at 1/8 and I won. It's not about skill. If I can get 1 more hit without dying that means that if I make a mistake, I still got 1 more chance to win. Also against laggy backstabbers 1 may save you from being 1 shotted. I'm not saying it's the best but for low level pvp it works very well. At higher levels with my build my endurance and vit are so high that I prefer mask of the child for a boost to stamina regen.

There is no absolutes here. You can't say Mother of Mask it's bad for any reason. It provides an advantage that not anyone can benefit from. If you're a bad player, you may last 1 more hit with the mask, but you will probably gonna get another and die, but if you're a bad player, with a tanking build that works well with high vit it may be worth something that extra vitality.

I wear 50/50, I try to wear what I like but only if it has good stats. That's what I like of Dark souls, you can upgrade almost any Armor to make it worth something.

Thankfully all the armors I like have good stats or can be upgraded so they have decent stats. I.E giants set, Paladin set.

Now I'm one of those players that wears what looks best and make it work in pvp/pve but to argue towards the flipy flip Havels person since no one else is its fair to say that if two people of equal skill dueled and one had mask of mother+min/max gear they would win so if winning is your top priority why wouldn't you wear it?

Anyone who thinks they look cool wearing the mask of the mother or child is fooling themselves. It isn't epic - it only points you out as a cookie-cutter. If they ever manage to win against me I don't reward them with an indictment. You get points for creativity, and min-maxers have none.

I will use child when facing certain bossses, but for PvP or normal enemies, it's Crown of the Dark Sun for mage/faith (and it looks pretty evil) or whatever has best poise/stats for melee build. Grass Crest works fine if stam regen is needed, but I usually don't need to rely on that.

Absolutely well said. I wasn't simply referring to Mask of the Mother/Child either. There are several visible armor/items that fall into this category to me. It's just very boring, and like you said, uncreative to me.

And some that have posted here, I guess kind of missing my point. If you're worried about that little extra bit and you are defending it, you're a min/maxers. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Just sayin.

I go for stats mostly... but still look unique compared to the mask/havels/giant/BKGA users I typically see. I've actually been complemented on my setup, though I do have to say my gf was around when that happened and she thought it was gay, lol.

This is something that From carried over from Demon's Souls, which was the utilization of wacky pieces that augmented abilities. Monk's Hat anyone? They purposefully did so to force you to answer the tough question of "Do you really want the edge?" If so, there will be a drawback, be it cosmetic or statistic. Stuff like this is completely agreeable to some and comes as a perfectly reasonable tradeoff, so to each their own. Personally, I have always had much more fun and felt most creative attempting to reconcile what I think looks good with what will serve me best. That's where you get all those personal touches, and there are now simply much more viable armor options in Dark to make that a possibility.

Not surprisingly, when you run into the cookie-cutters their play style is just as conventional as their gear. Get ready for someone solely focused on backstabs, using WoG, etc. They all play exactly the same. It's a pleasure to run into unique characters with unique PvP playstyles - and they are out there. These are the guys I give indictments to and feel good losing to.
