Can someone explain 'weapons buffs' to a newbie?

Post by Ironliftr3 on Wed Apr 11, 2012 1:32 pm

When you're talking about weapons buffs, are you talking about the pine resins, or is it something else? Is it only weapons that can be buffed?

I understand buff's can't be used with weapons that are upgraded to lightning, fire, occult, enchanted? Are the buffed weapons superior to the upgraded weapons?

    Thanks in advance!

Hey Ironliftr3, I am not the best person to answer this (I am a newbie in most regards too), but to my knowledge the term weapon buff is referring to either applying a resin or a magical buff (magic weapon, greater magic weapon, darkmoon blade, sunlight blade, to a weapon). The thing is, a buffed weapon applies that element to a weapon while still allowing for scaling benefits from using a non-elemental weapon. So say, you could use a +15 uchi, and have really high dexterity, and then apply the lightning resin to it to make it do lightning without losing the scaling benefits. Furthermore, the spell versions scale with your stats as well, and some improve with covenant rank (ex. darkmoon blade), this allows for a significant damage output (due to weapon, spell, and covenant based scalings) making it very powerful.

    Hope that helped,
    Berkut

    There are the three Resins.

    Fire, Poison, Lightning.

As well there are spells that buff.

Sunlight Blade, Darkmoon Blade, Hidden Weapon, Magic Weapon, Greater Magic Weapon, and Crystal Magic weapon. I may have missed a few, but I think you get the basics of it.

Buffs can be used on, Base Upgrade so no elements, Raw, and Crystal. There are a few weapons that use Twink titanite to upgrade that can be buffed such as the Silver Knight Sword, as well certain Dragon Weapons can be buffed such as the Dragon's tooth. Buffed weapons with scaling will always deal more damage, because you have stat scaling then an elemental damage.

EDIT: Berkut has beaten the fastest poster in the wild west.

Yeah, the resins are buffs. There are also spells that buff your right-hand weapon, both sorcery and miracle spells. The buffs don't work on weapons with "unique" upgrade path, meaning if they require twinkling titanite, dragon scales, whatever, they can't be buffed. There are a few exceptions though, like the Silver Knight Sword and the Dragon Tooth to name a couple.

Elemental upgrades like lightning and fire are wicked-strong until your stats get up there, then buffing is almost always the way to go.

@Tolvo: Yeah once silly, and your description was better anyways.

I think I got it. The magic buffs are only obtainable through elevated ranks within a covenant, is that correct? I haven't really used any of the resins, and haven't beaten enough in PVP (I really SUCK) to get the Darkmoon Blade in any of my builds. I guess I'll need to keep trying! Thanks for the explanations guys!

Not a problem, note that only some magic buffs are covenant based, such as darkmoon blade, others, such as crystal magic weapon, are based solely on your ability to cast spells

CMW is bought from Logan, MW is bought from Griggs, GMW is found in Anor Londo. SLB is gotten after fighting Gwyndolin, and DMB is gotten from joining the Darkmoon.

To add to Tolvo's above locations, Hidden Weapon is purchased from Dusk of Oolacile

aha and dont forget bout normal buffs such as flash sweat, iron flesh, hidden body, GMB, MG or dragon body roar these buffs are applayed to the player most of them last 60 sec(i think, dragon body roar only lasts 10 sec) most of them increast defence, resistance or damage output.

And OP, Sunlight Blade is wickedly strong (and cool looking), so if your character will have faith you'll definitely want that. Its downside is that you only get one casting per attunement slot.

Ah, I didn't realize the 'sorceries' were considered buffs. I actually have a character who has most of them, but I haven't really used them. Probably because I was focusing on the upgraded (fire/lightning) weapons. I'll have to go back to that character and experiment some more now that I understand.

Sunlight Blade is only obtainable through the covenant, right?

Negatory, I believe that darkmoon blade is only obtainable through ranking up in the dark moon covenant, but I think that the sunlight blade is obtained in a chest after killing Gwyndolin (kind of opposites of each other really)

Ah, I think that's the one thing I've yet to 'do' in this game. Kill her and send Andor Londo dark.

The chest isn't behind Gwynevere, but behind a boss that appears after Anor Londo goes dark (just clarifying happy )
