Fan or Fanatic? (*hint*: If your'e reading this you may be fanatical)

Merriam-Webster.com describes a Fanatic as:
marked by excessive enthusiasm and often intense uncritical devotion.

When someone says they are a fan of such and such, they usually mean they like something, right? An enthusiastic Dark Souls player might call themselves a fan, when I think, in fact, most of us are indeed FANATICS.

To my untrained eye, there is no such thing as a casual Dark Souls player. Correct me if i'm wrong on that one, but from what I can see it's all or nothing with this game!

The great thing about Dark Souls, is, because of the level of ambiguity involved in the game, the community spirit that has grown around it is unparalleled. This is the first, and probably last game that I have enjoyed spending as much time reading about, and hearing anecdotes about, than I have actually playing!

We're a great bunch of lads/ladies really, aren't we?

I'm a fanatic. I try to convince anyone that plays video games to get it and it's one of two games I've played since last October.

Can't convince any of my mates to give it a go either.
The sad thing is, I haven't been able to get into any game since. Barely touched Arkham City, and Uncharted 3 remains stuck on chapter 2.

I disagree because most of us are not uncritical of the game. A lot of us on here are ready to claim it's the best game we've every played, but none of us would say it has no flaws.

I'm a fanatic as well. Dark Souls only leaves my disk drive to make room for demon souls.

well, if you're willing to put in over 100 hours into a single game, I think it's safe to say you're a fanatic.

But since we can agree that is safely the case, what the hell are we :|.........

I think it might be a little biased to take your assumption that its all or nothing off these forums. Anyone who is here is pretty much fanatical. Like wade, Dark souls only comes out to make room for demons for me. Its been a long time since I played any other game for more than 2 hours before coming back to Dark.

But I have gotten a few of my friends to get the game, and they played it casually with my help. I got one of them about half way through and he finished it by himself, haven't seen him play it since then. Maybe the fanatical are just too vocal a bunch.

if it was me, I dont get why you said it though, since to be motivated enough to play a game for 100 hours is very significant amount of time in my eyes, hence makes you fanatical for giving up so much time

I'm actually not a fanatic, I absolutely love this game above all other games at the moment, but I still have my gripes with it. Such as how I cringe every time I see "Seath the Scaleless Betrayed his own."

I'm a huge story and lore buff, and whenever I see that line it just feels like...They couldn't come up with an explanation. It just feels like a huge cop out to me, unlike so much else in the game I feel this is just a lazy line to put in the game.

EDIT: Tolvo, maybe its something lost in translation? I hear the japanese language loses a lot of its romance and what not into english and can become boring. Personally I never really cared.

Tolvo, say that, then go back to demons and tell me the lore from that makes more sense. At least they improved it significantly for Dark, even if there's the odd thing here and there.

But I swear the reason is clear.. It's jealousy of their scales of immortality, the same reason he goes insane from research to no end, he just wants to be immortal. I think he may have been shunned too because of his such contrasting appearance to the stone dragons.

I am a fanatic without a doubt. I actually got Dark Souls in Febuary, but I haven't even touched another game since. In fact, I'm actually dreading when more games come out, because it means I will have an obligation to buy them and leave Dark Souls for a while.

I don't want to leave Dark Souls!

Throw my name in with the fanatics as well. I actually pre-ordered this game (for Xbox) and since it's release in October the only other game I've played regularly is Halo. I have a relatively short attention span so I normally beat a game & move on, or play the multiplayer for a couple of weeks at most. I SHOULD be absolutely sick of this game by now, but with over 500 hours logged between my two main characters alone...still I play on!

Scary stuff, I was halfway through a post on this thread when, for no apparent reason, my computer decided to transport me back to my desktop without so much as a ' by your leave', so I'll apologise if some of this appears twice.

Am I a fanatic? Dunno. I only know that since starting to play Dark Souls on the 7th October 2011 I haven't been able to get into any other game. Hell knows I've tried, 'Skyrim', Final FantasyXIII-2, Portal, nothing works but then deep down I don't think I want it to, which is the key I guess.

I actually managed to get into Dragon age 2. But then I finished the mage ending and couldnt be bothered to redo the templar ending. Id say Im more a forum fanatic and just a fan of the game.

pirate, while it's obvious that was originally the case, they have become two separate things now. You can be a fan of something without being fanatical about it, one just seems to be a liking whereas the other is more in line with an obsession.

Dark Souls is the worst game I have ever played. It's impossible! I finally killed the Carpa Demon and made it to the Depths but this Graping Dragun is impposible! This hame sucks, GTA ALL THE WAY!
