An upgraded heavy deflection shield (minimum 14-16 str) and stamina regen items make it a lot easier. I think buddy here is already able to be summoned. I may be wrong thinking it's a difference of -/+ 10 SLs + 10% of your SL.

That's more than enough since it's 16. The iron shield (14 str) is heavy deflection but has poor stability (eats up lots of stamina). I'd get it to +10 or more and you should be all set for the "third times the charm" boss.
