This made me really mad
Some dude on Game Central Inbox has called Dark Souls a 'standard hack and slasher' and then went on to say that if the game contained any more 'painstaking duels with Taurus Demon like enemies' then he was out. Little does he know.

Obviously he wasn't up for the challenge. I would say that he even wasn't able to pass the Burg. He got tired Of dying to many times...
Of course Dark Souls isn't just a hack and slash game, if someone says that, he obviouslly doesn't know the game at all.

Re: This made me really mad
It's typical that people who think it's just a 'hack & slash' game that they won't like it. It's an RPG first and foremost. It'd be like calling Fallout a FPS, it's not, and if you treat it as such you'll get owned.

Re: This made me really mad
Hack and slash? Did he even play the game?
I admit, when I first started, it was so tedious. Lure an enemy out, block, attack, block, attack, until he was dead. Then repeat ad nauseum. Then, I heard about something called a Drake Sword. And the rest is history.

Let's invite him to the forest to host. Mr. Hack and Slash would make for a nice relaxing invasion time.

That's From's next angle to market the game to a wider audience!!!!!
Just like trading cards used to have gum they can pioneer the lollipops in game case movement.

Gives new meaning to the term 'case candy'.

Re: This made me really mad
In the guys defense, when I got Demon's Souls I was under the assumption it was a hack and slash game with rpg elements. Treated as such it was probably the worst gaming experience I had ever had. That changed when my friend came over and wanted to try it. I watched him play it and after 20 min or so he'd gotten twice as far as I had (which was barely past the first blue eye'd knight). I put the game down for a bit and went back to my usual fallout or oblivion. Then a couple months later I picked it up and started again and the rest is history.
Point being that to your "average" gamer and I say that meaning no offence to anyone who considers themselves "average", but its a very misleading game. Most rpg's are not combat intensive and don't require you to have much skill in combat as the main focus is stats and strategy. This game is a beautiful mix of action and rpg that is misleading to most. I can see how someone used to games like God of War could mistake this game for a hack and slash.
And honestly this game is not for everyone.

Re: This made me really mad
You can make any generalization over the greatest games in the world. MGS4 being compared to a movie is a common one despite its predecessors, especially 2, all having substantial amounts of cinematics in them. Biggest difference is that 4 substituted most of the codec conversations for actual interactions. I remember when the power puff girl movies came out, i was listening to the news in my bedroom and some critic said it was too violent for a cartoon. This guy clearly has never seen any loony toon character in his life.
Hack and slash games in general get a bad rep about their combat systems
all the time. Id bet money that most of the critics who complain about
the "you just hit X and win" logic are the same morons who say
final fantasy 13's combat system is innovative and fun. (I like the
combat system a lot, not ragging on it, but if you want to generalize
you just hit "X")
Anyway, point is a lot of critics make silly generalizations that arent well thought out and what you get out of the game is whats important. If some dope wants to say its like god of war, let him say it. Hes right in his own way, and wrong in many others.

I haven't ever played a 'true' hack and slash game before so I don't know the difference :\
Souls games are their own class imo.

Pick up one the early Dynasty Warriors games, probably the best example I can think of for Hack and Slash. Kingdoms hearts 2 is another great example. Press attack until triangle is on screen, then press that.

^ Nah I'm going to stick to DkS and DS
I can't stand uber-ninja games like that, too dramatic for me.

If you are looking for hack and slash try Devil may cry or bayonetta (even if she kicks people instead of cutting them)

Re: This made me really mad
Dark Souls is an amazing game and definitely not a "hack and slash" game. It may not have as many good rpg elements like Skyrim or Fallout( these games have a really good story and stuff) but the fighting style in dark souls is unmatched!! truly amazing and precise combat( reminds me of the glory days of legend of zelda) BEAST GAME!!!! nuff said

Re: This made me really mad
Imagine Dark Souls with no stamina bar, no poise, faster weapons with more AoE and range, and more enemies on screen. That's pretty much what an average hack 'n slash game is like.Yarxov wrote:I haven't ever played a 'true' hack and slash game before so I don't know the difference :\

If I made it sound unappealing... it's probably because I don't like them much! I loved Devil May Cry back on PS2, but that series was a bit deeper and more demanding than your average game in its genre. I played God of War 3 this gen, and was thoroughly unimpressed. Was pretty much just room after room of mobs you need to mindlessly clear out to move to the next area.
So qualifying Dark Souls as a hack and slash is very ignorant. Yes, Souls games are pretty much in their own class.

Blain, you forgot to add that enemies typically take around 1-5% of your health away with each hit in typical Hack and Slash games. Plus, QTE!

Re: This made me really mad
I considered the health thing, but I have to concede that some of them are quite harsh on damage taken. But your average hack and slash on normal difficulty, yes, mobs do very little damage.
Also: on top of what we already mentioned, take out 90% of the weapons and armor in Dark Souls to make it a hack and slash.
